Harrington Tournament Recap

Dedham, Mass. -- In the championship game, junior defenseman Lily Farden scored early in the third period to give Nobles a much-needed two-goal cushion as they held off a scrappy BB&N team to take a 5-2 win and another Harrington title. This was a more entertaining game than the final score might indicate. A Maya Mangiafico goal in the second period cut the Nobles lead to 2-1 and gave BB&N a huge boost of energy. However, the strong Nobles defense did an excellent job protecting the lead for senior goaltender Kelly Pickreign. Nobles was able to put it in cruise control after senior Abby Volo followed up her own rebound late in the third period to seal the championship for the Bulldogs.

We had a chance to watch a number of games at the Harrington, and here are some of our thoughts about the six teams we were able to see. We missed Westminster and Milton, but there’s plenty of season left and we expect to catch them soon.

Nobles

Nobles, despite their enormous success over the years, might be the biggest surprise this year. The early line held that Nobles would be down this year, given their youth and the fact that they lost their two best players, Becca Gilmore and Casey O'Brien. But Nobles is loaded with young talent. The only game they lost here was to St Paul’s and #1 goaltender Kelly Pickreign did not play that game. When star ninth grade forward Katie Pyne went down with an injury early in the tournament, coach Tom Resor moved another impressive freshman, Ellie Bayard, up to the top line with high scorer Katie Tresca. And Nobles didn’t miss a beat. On defense, Lily Farden had a strong tournament along with fellow Harvard recruit Nicki Lutschaunig and 8th grader Kaley MacDonald. In goal, Pickreign isn’t always tested much, but she is always there when needed. We expect Nobles to be a real factor down the stretch with all their young talent continuing to develop. Should that happen they might be the team most likely to take down Kent in the end.

BB&N

BB&N is well coached and very scrappy. They do not have the high-end talent that Nobles does, but wow, does coach Ed Bourget get the Knights to play hard. Up front, Mangiafico, Jenna Hallice, Lexi Schmalz and Molly Griffin had strong tournaments. On defense, BB&N is solid; both senior Kayla Duran and Mia Biotti had great tournaments. Lauren Jackson also impressed. It looked to us like BB&N was rotating four goalies during the tournament which is something that we have never seen before. Hopefully they can find a #1 goalie down the stretch because they will need it to contend for a playoff spot. We thought junior Rei Halloran had a strong game vs. Williston.

Williston

It’s hard to tell what Williston team we will see down the stretch. When they want to play, they are as good as anyone. When they don’t want to play, they look very average, as we saw when BB&N came storming back in the third period to stun them. Williston is loaded up front with Gabby Jones (Merrimack), Marielle McHale (Syracuse) and Kate Holmes (NU) all having stand-out performances. On defense, Williston is good, not great. UNH recruit Tori Palumbo had a solid tournament but Williston had a lot of defensive breakdowns. It looked like Williston was playing some of its forwards on defense as they got deeper into the St. Paul’s game. If Williston is going to do anything over the second half of the season they will need to solidify their backend and get more consistent goaltending.

St. Paul’s

Another team we are having a hard time trying to figure out. Up front they are loaded with D-I talent. The top line of Gillis Frechette (Cornell), Gaby Roy (BC) and Tiffany Hill (Dartmouth) can play with anyone. Bella Kang, Olivia Lin and Natalie Tulchinsky also had outstanding tournaments. St. Paul’s weak point is on the blue line, therefore SPS relies on sophomore goaltender Maddie Beck to come up big every game. They tend to go with a three D, two forward system. SPS is the only team to beat Nobles so far this season so they must be doing something right. We expect them to be a real threat down the stretch.

Lawrence

LA started the tournament off with a huge upset of St. Paul’s when senior Grace Bellefeuille knocked in a Corinne McCool (UVM) rebound in OT. But, going forward, they were never really able to build off that momentum. LA has a great first line with Bellefeuille, McCool and Mia Fusco logging major minutes. After that, there’s a dropoff. On the back end, PC recruit Jamie Comeau and Jenna Seibold both had strong weekends. LA goalie Maddox Angerhofer, with the exception of a bad start vs. Nobles, has been very impressive in net. LA will need to find some depth if they are going to repeat as a playoff team.

St. Mark’s

St. Mark’s once again impressed and is without question a team that could be a factor coming down the stretch. Up front they rely on seniors Lindsey Dumont, a UNH recruit, as well as Providence recruit Caroline Peterson to play big roles; they both delivered. Marlee Paterson and Juliana Gong also were very impressive. St. Mark’s is not deep on defense but junior Bailey Horne was a standout. And they can play physically. In net, sophomore Lydia Rauscher looks like a real prospect. She made some huge saves when needed and kept the Lions in games despite defensive breakdowns in front of her.

Rivers Rules Dexter Southfield Tournament

Due to the demolition of the old Thorndike Rink, some of the tournament's games were played at other venues, so seeing all the teams as much as we would have liked proved difficult. But not so difficult that it wasn't plain as day that Rivers was the class of the tournament. As for the renovations at the Dexter Southfield rink, they are outstanding.

Rivers (3-0-0) -- They weren't really challenged, besting their three opponents by a combined score of 13-1. With a deep bench and balanced scoring, Rivers made a strong statement that they will be a team to contend with in D-II. They return from the break with games against ISL opponents Brooks and Nobles.

Groton (2-0-1) -- The Zebras were paced by senior captain and goaltender Min Shin, who posted shutouts over Middlesex and Thayer in her two games. Freshman Elena Junkala showed some flash and an ability to put the puck in the net for Groton.

Thayer (2-1-0) -- The Tigers relied upon strong defense and the goaltending of senior Emily Smith, winning two one-goal games and falling in overtime in the third game. Sophomore forward Rivers Morris showed strong command of the puck and junior captain Dylan Amonte was strong in all three zones. While the Tigers won two of three, they will need to find some scoring depth after scoring only four goals in three games.

Kimball Union (2-1-0) -- The Wildcats look like they will be in contention again in D-II this year. Senior captain Mia Brown and junior Mikah Baptiste set the pace for the KUA offense.

Middlesex (1-2-0) -- Middlesex has more depth than in years past. They also compete hard in all three zones. But an inability to generate consistent offense will hurt Middlesex in the long run.

Dexter Southfield (1-2-0) -- Southfield’s early-season struggles continued with its only win coming via forfeit over Brewster. Junior Karly Aguirre did provide some offensive spark, but Southfield, to get into playoff contention, has to get going in the second half.

Millbrook (0-2-1) -- They battled, but need more in the way of offensive contributions. Junior forward Emma Gotthelf has a strong motor and senior goaltender Jessie Foote demonstrated the ability to keep them competitive.

Brewster Academy (0-3-0) -- An unfortunate injury to their only goaltender left Brewster in the unenviable position of having to forfeit games, and borrow a goaltender to play scrimmages in its remaining game slots.

VA Makes Statement at Watkins

In perhaps the biggest surprise in girls' hockey that we have seen in years, Vermont Academy, behind new coach Lisa Marshall, stunned defending D-I champs New Hampton in the Watkins championship game by a 4-0 score. We knew going into the season that coach Marshall was rebuilding the girls' program, and had recruited some talented new players, but we had no idea that they could possibly be the best girls' prep hockey team -- in either D-I or D-II.

Vermont Academy

VA is led by three players from the Czech Republic, and they are all outstanding. Up front, sophomore Kristyna Kaltounkova might be the top player in girls' prep hockey. She is a threat every time she sets foot on the ice and her 42 points in 13 games proves it. We are hearing that she had multiple scholarship offers by the time she left the rink on Saturday. On defense, another Czech sophomore, Klara Jandusikova, is a game changer and might be the best-skating defenseman that we have seen. In goal, yes, you guessed it, another Czech in PG Skodova Blanka. A former Czech National Team goalie who is as good as anyone we have seen at this level in years. With these three players and other talented contributors, it's going to be tough for anyone to beat VA this season.

New Hampton

Coach Churchill has yet again assembled a very talented Husky team. However, they have been inconsistent. We watched them struggle with Deerfield and then get totally manhandled by VA in the finals. Up front, senior Sav Norcross, juniors McKenzie Haberl, Lily Humphries, and Kelly Matthews; and sophomore Anna Shelden all had strong tournaments. On D, New Hampton isn’t as deep as last year but freshman Courtney Colarullo, sophomore Maddie Crowley-Cahill and junior Lauren DeBlois were solid. Goaltending looks to be a big issue right now for the Huskies. It will need to be much better for New Hampton to have a chance to repeat.

Worcester Academy

For Worcester, it’s all about trying to contain star center Micaela Sindoris, a Northeastern commit, and her potent linemates, sophomore Ciara Wall and junior Carley Daly. On the backend, sophomore Alexis Cagan and senior Tia Martignetti stood out, and WA junior goaltender Meaghan Miranda looked very solid. Worcester is not as deep as last year but coach Kevin Zifcak has a group that will be a tough out for anyone.

Berkshire

Berkshire struggled all weekend with results, but they worked hard and are well coached. Coach Becky McCabe is definitely in a rebuild mode and it is only a matter of time before the Bears are back where they belong, competing for a playoff spot. Up front, senior Katie Hargrave, junior Harley Frechette, and 9th grader Catherine Appleyard all stood out.

Deerfield

We have been disappointed with what we have seen from the Big Green so far this season. We watched them outplay New Hampton for a good chunk of one game and end up losing, 7-4. Deerfield is deep up front with two solid lines. Junior Mary Edmonds had a very strong tournament playing alongside 9th grader Elia Chiang. PG Elizabeth Hernberg also stood out. On the backend, the Big Green's defense is deep with junior Deirdre Mullowney, a BC recruit, and Erin Demarco having very good tournaments. DA will need to get much better goaltending if they are going to turn their season around: both goalies struggled.

Cushing

Coach Val Bono continues to rebuild the Penguin program, and, although they didn’t get the results they were looking for here, the future looks bright. Senior goaltender Gloria Bilafer is off to a great start and keeps Cushing in just about every game. Up front, Margaret Sullivan, Dominique Biron, Ally Frechette and Mia Sacco all had strong tournaments. We expect Cushing to continue to improve as the season goes on.

Winchendon

We only had a chance to watch Winchendon once and they were very competitive in the game that we watched. Up front, 9th grader Kiley Mastel and sophomore Isabelle Frenette looked very good. Hope Walinski, a 9th grade goalie, also looks to be a good prospect.

Northwood

Our schedule didn't allow us to see them.

Carpenter, Bozek Reportedly Cut

Unnamed sources indicate that former Governor's Academy ('11) and Boston College ('16) star forward Alex Carpenter and defenseman Megan Bozek, a University of Minnesota ('13) grad, have been cut from the U.S. Olympic Team.

Both Carpenter, the 2015 Patty Kazmaier Award winner, and Bozek were members of the silver-medal winning team at Sochi, Russia. Carpenter notched five points (4g,1a) in five games.

It's fair to say that the Boston-area hockey community is pretty stunned -- incredulous might be a better word -- by these reports.

Where there's smoke there's fire, so we'll probably hear more on this later. Right now, there is nothing official.

Update, 11:40 am: The above has been confirmed.

Kent Dominates at Odden Tournament
Watertown, Conn. -- We made it down to Taft last week to watch some of the best teams in girls prep hockey battle it out at the prestigious Patsy K. Odden Invitational. In a bit of a surprise, it wasn't as competitive as most years. The reason? The Kent Lions ran away from everyone else in the field and cruised to the championship. The much- hyped early round-robin game between #1 Tabor and #2 Kent turned out to be a real disappointment as Kent just overpowered Tabor in a game that really wasn’t close.

Kent

Having seen many of the top girls' prep teams already this season, one thing that's clear is that Kent is just a little bit better than everyone else. The Lions are big, fast, physical and well-coached. Up front they have a bunch of D-I talent including seniors Jesse DeVito, Tina Paolillo and Lizzie Gross; juniors Julia Nearis and Cec Ehrhard, and  sophomore Ally Thanassi. On defense, Kent is also deep, with seniors Tabea Botthof and Mel Anderson both having great tournaments. And Kent goalie Nina Prunster? Her performance was a total eye-opener... just spectacular. And surprising, too, because from what we saw, Prunster, a senior, might be the best goalie in prep hockey -- and coming into the season we thought goaltending might be Kent's biggest weakness! Watch out for the Lions. They look like they are still angry over last year’s heartbreaking OT loss to New Hampton -- and hungry for a title.

Tabor

What was also clear after watching Tabor play Kent was that the Seawolves still have a lot of work to do if they hope to have a chance to take down Kent at the end of the season. Up front, Tabor has a lot of D-I commits who often have their way with weaker teams. But, against teams like Kent, they are not quite ready. Boston College commit Kelly Browne may be the best player in girls' prep hockey, but she can’t do it alone. The Tabor top line of Browne, junior Cindy Giandomenico and UNH commit Annie Berry looked spectacular at times, but the Seawolves second and third lines really need to step it up in tight games in order to have playoff success. On defense, seniors Jill Fey and Julia Schiffman were solid, as was soph Julia Shaughnessy, but the Tabor defense as well as their goaltending needs to be much better if they are going to contend for a NEPSAC title.

Andover

Andover looked good at times and surprisingly flat at other times. They were outplayed in a surprising loss to Taft and then came back and had a great win vs. Loomis followed by a tough OT loss to Tabor. Up front, senior Charlotte Welch, sophomore Lily Feeney and 9th grader Anna Bargman played well. On defense, Andover is deep with seniors Sarah Rigazio and Liz Holubiak, and junior Erin Kelley all playing solid hockey. In goal, it looks like coach Martha Fenton has her hands full with three goalies all fighting for playing time. Andover will need to settle that position in order to make another playoff run.

Taft

Coach Gretchen Silverman is doing a great job getting the Rhinos back in the playoff picture. Taft has nowhere near the talent of some of the other teams here but, wow, are they well coached, and do they work hard. It is quite an accomplishment that Taft was the runner-up in this tournament, coming out ahead of teams like Tabor and Andover. Up front, we were impressed with seniors Natalie Witkowski and Lexi Cafeiro (Colby), PGs McKinley Karpa (RIT) and Mya Berretta (Hamilton). On defense, seniors Vivian Lu (Brown) and Sarah Ince (Middlebury) were standouts. Senior goaltender Sidney Molnar (Hamilton) was terrific in net.

Loomis

Coach Liz Leyden has once again put together a playoff contending team, but this is not a Pelicans team as deep and talented as we are accustomed to seeing. Loomis was stunned by Andover, 5-4, in the Friday morning game and was knocked out of both playoff games. We were hoping to have a chance to watch Loomis play Kent but both Taft and Andover won in the three-way tiebreaker so Loomis didn’t advance. Up front, Loomis relies on juniors Jess Schryver and Georgia Krauss a lot, and they both had strong showings. Junior Avery Flynn looked good on D and senior Taylor Stadelli was very impressive in net.

Choate

It looks like coach Nicole Stock is in a bit of a rebuilding mode as the Wild Boars had a tough time keeping up against both Kent and Tabor. Up front, junior Kaitlyn O’Donahoe, a Colgate recruit, was all over the ice. Choate is solid on the blue line as senior Lexi Takashima had a strong tournament. BU commit Nicole McGuigan is one of the best goaltenders we have seen and will keep Choate in many games.

Undefeated Kent Tops Div. I Poll

D-I Poll, Week of Dec. 18th

1. Kent (7-0-0) -- We don’t want to hand Kent the trophy quite yet, but they are going to be very tough for anyone to beat. Big, fast, lots of skill and a great goalie!

2. Nobles (6-1-1) -- Can all the young talent at Nobles continue to develop enough to give Kent a run? We think they can.

3. Tabor (5-1-0) -- Tabor has Kelly Browne but they need some others to step up in big games. Will need more consistent goaltending to contend for a title.

4. Loomis (4-1-1) -- A little hiccup vs. Andover, but Loomis looks strong as usual.

5. New Hampton (3-1-0) -- We have seen New Hampton a lot already and they are a hard team to figure out. Lots of talent, but will need better goaltending to contend for another title.

6. St. Paul’s (4-2-1) -- Very impressive win over Nobles, but have been very inconsistent so far this season.

7. St Mark's (5-2-1)  St. Mark's looked very good at the Harrington. They will be a factor down the stretch.

8. Williston (4-2-0) -- Watched Williston twice at the Harrington -- both tough losses to BB&N and St. Paul’s. Another team that has a lot of firepower but was unable to put it all together. Coach Talbot will get them back on track and we expect them to be a factor when we get deeper into the season.

Honorable Mention: Andover (2-2-0), BB&N (3-2-0), Taft (2-2-0), NMH (3-1-1).

Vermont Academy #1 in Div. II Poll

Vermont Academy, which has won nine straight, had an impressive run at the Watkins Tournament, besting four D-I teams by a combined score of 22-3, including a 4-0 win over defending D-II NEPSAC champions New Hampton. They are our new #1.  Defending D-II champions Worcester Academy, still undefeated against D-II opponents, comes in at #2. The full poll with overall records against all NEPSAC teams is set forth below. Our next poll will be Monday January 8, 2018.

1.  Vermont Academy (10-0-1) -- While there were some concerns about the schedule early on, those concerns have been laid to rest. VA's high-powered offense will be tough to stop. We're looking forward to the Jan. 26th rematch at New Hampton.

2.  Worcester Academy (6-2-0) -- The Hilltoppers are in strong position to defend their title. The early January match with St. Mark's will be a tough first game back.

3.  Rivers (5-1-0) -- With their only loss coming to D-I Tabor, the Red Wings have depth and experience. which will help them as they get into the ISL portion of their schedule. Facing Brooks right after the break will be a good test.

4.  Brooks (4-0-3) -- With only 7 goals allowed in 7 games, Brooks defense and goaltending have been strong. Brooks faces #3 Rivers, Andover and Lawrence back-to-back-to-back after the break. That will put their undefeated record to the test.

5.  Canterbury (8-0-0) -- The Saints are the only D-II team with an unblemished record so far. The schedule ramps up in January with three D-I foes and #6 KUA in their first four games back.

6.  Kimball Union (4-2-1) -- KUA has shown that last season's playoff appearance was no fluke. Back-to-back games on the road in mid-January against #1 Vermont and D-I power St. Paul's will be daunting.

7.  Gunnery (2-3-1) -- Don't let the record fool you. Two of those three losses are to D-I teams #1 Kent and Westminster.  If the Highlanders are able to secure another playoff spot, they will be battled tested due to their D-I heavy schedule.

8.  Groton (4-1-2) -- While there has been some early success for Groton, with the ISL schedule getting into full swing and non-league matchups with #1 Vermont, #2 Worcester and Proctor looming, Groton will be challenged to maintain its status.

Honorable Mention: Greenwich (4-3-0); Proctor (6-4-0); St. George’s (5-2-0)

Correction, 5:35 pm Monday: Our mistake on the score of Saturday's Rivers-Southfield game -- we had the score transposed -- led to an error in the poll posted earlier. We've corrected the score but, as a result, the teams in the #3-#5 range have been reshuffled.

Ex-Deerfield Standout Guay Named Olympic Referee

Former Deerfield Academy and Brown University ('05) standout Katie Guay has been chosen to officiate the women's hockey competition at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea Feb. 10-25.

Guay, a Westfield, Mass. native who was also a coach on Tom Resor's staff at Nobles before concentrating full-time on her officiating duties, is familiar to attendees at men's and women's college games, as well as boys' and girls' prep school games.

Also named to officiate at the Women's Olympics is former Nichols School and Princeton grad Dina (McCumber) Allen, a North Tonawanda, NY native.

Paul Stewart, Director of Officiating for the ECAC men and women, and prep boys and girls, said he watched Guay and Allen work the Oct. 25th US-Canada women's exhibition game at Agganis Arena. "They were excellent," he said. "I could use ten more like them!"

Stewart said that Guay, an excellent skater with an ability to quickly get to the right spots on the ice, is always looking to get better. "As an example, in the summer we have a session 3-4 mornings a week with skating instructor Mandy Curtin at 5:45 am at Rodman Arena," Stewart said. "And Katie Guay is always there."

"We're proud of the fact that (Guay and Allen) are part of our group. I've been lucky and have been to many places in my life and to see young people get this opportunity is heartwarming. That's the satisfaction I get out of it."

With the Men's Olympics going without NHL players, the US and Canadian Women will find the spotlight shining brightly on them.

New Hampton Saves Their Best for Last

Concord, NH -- #7-ranked New Hampton exploded for three goals in the game’s final minutes to bust open a 2-2 tie en route to a 5-2 road win over #4-ranked St. Paul’s.

New Hampton’s first line of junior McKenzie Haberl, and seniors Savannah Norcross and Caelin Flaherty – along with junior goaltender MJ Peters -- were the difference-makers in the game. The line was involved in all five of the Huskies’ goals on Friday. Haberl, from Falmouth, Mass., led New Hampton with two goals and three assists.

The final score doesn’t do the game justice, as St. Paul’s looked like the team to beat in the first period. Senior captain Gillis Frechette, a Cornell commit, got St. Paul’s on the board first, just three and a half minutes into the game, off a shot from between the circles. St. Paul’s continued to control play for most of the first period until a sloppy neutral zone turnover gave New Hampton’s Haberl a breakaway goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 3:30 left in the first.

There was no scoring in the second period, but the game grew increasing chippy, with five penalties, which brought the game’s total up to nine. St. Paul’s outshot New Hampton over the first two periods by approximately ten shots.

In the third period, with ten minutes remaining in the contest, New Hampton’s Caelin Flaherty scored a powerplay goal to give her team a 2-1 lead. St. Paul’s goalie, new sophomore Maddie Beck, who played a solid game, saw Flaherty’s backhander roll over her back shoulder and into the net.

St. Paul’s then found themselves on a 5v3 power play with 6:55 to go and down by a goal. The Big Red called a timeout and just 30 seconds later new sophomore defenseman Grace Martin tied the game at 2-2 on a shot from the point.

The final eight minutes of the game got a little out of control as nine penalties were called. There was one seven-minute stretch during which there was at least one player in the box for either team.

New Hampton capitalized on the open ice, scoring the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal, off a shot from the corner by sophomore forward Anna Shelden with 2:15 to go. Just under a minute later, off of a blue line turnover by St. Paul’s, New Hampton’s Flaherty found herself on a breakaway and buried a shot five-hole to put the Huskies up 4-2 with a little over a minute to play. New Hampton scored an empty-net goal with 30 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

We talked to New Hampton’s coach, Craig Churchill, after the game. He applauded his team’s goaltending and their ability to exploit their moments of momentum and capitalize on the opportunities they had. When asked what his team needed to work on, Churchill said they will focus on tidying up their work in the defensive zone.

There was no shortage of talent on the ice tonight and the game could’ve ended up with the same score but a different winner. It will be fun to watch these teams play again. And they will. The rematch is on Friday February 2nd, at 2:30 pm, at New Hampton.

Nobles Too Much For Deerfield

Deerfield, Mass. -- Harvard commit Katie Tresca scored two goals to lead Nobles to an impressive 5-2 win over host Deerfield Friday.

Early in the first period Nobles jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind the dynamic combination of Tresca and freshman Katie Pyne.

Deerfield made an impressive comeback with two goals to tie the game at 2-2 in the second. A stretch of back-and-forth action ensued, but Nobles took the lead for good when junior Maddie Bayard scored a beautiful goal, taking the wind out of the Big Green’s sails and giving Nobles the lead for good.

We were once again highly impressed by this young Nobles team. They have a plethora of young talent, play at a fast pace, and are fun to watch. We knew Pyne was a great addition, but the Bayard sisters have been pleasant surprises. Nobles also has a very strong defense.

Although it’s still early, this Nobles team looks better than last year’s superstar-laden squad.

For Deerfield, it’s the second time we have watched them play this year and we are somewhat surprised by their lackluster start (0-3). Deerfield started slowly against Nobles, which should never happen at home. We’re sure their goalie would like to have a few of the Nobles’ goals back. On the flip side, when Deerfield went down 2-0 they definitely picked their game back up quickly and, led by senior Elizabeth Hernberg and junior Mary Edmonds, started playing desperate hockey. Deerfield definitely has the talent to be a strong playoff contender but, even though it’s early, they need to turn things around quickly to avoid seeing the season slip away.

Three Stars of the Game:
1. Katie Tresca, Nobles senior F
2. Katie Pyne, Nobles freshman F
3. Maddie Bayard, Nobles junior F

***
Tabor 3 @ Lawrence 1 -- Goals from junior Annie Berry (UNH), junior Cindy Giandomenico and senior Olivia Finocchiaro (BC) propelled #1-ranked Tabor to a big win on the road vs. a scrappy Lawrence Academy team. Senior Corinne McCool scored the lone goal for the Spartans

Wed. Dec. 6 Highlights

@ Nobles 3, St. Mark's 1 -- Freshmen Ellie Bayard (2g) and Katie Pyne (1g) led Nobles to a 3-1 win over St. Mark's 3-1 in one of this week's most highly-anticipated games. We have been so impressed with the younger players at Nobles -- and that includes 8th grad forward Kate Hamm. With a strong backend, we might have underestimated this year's Nobles team.

@ St Paul’s 5, Lawrence 2 -- After going down early, it was all St. Paul’s in this one as sophomore Tiffany Hill had two goals to lead the Big Red to an impressive victory. St. Paul’s is very deep up front with 4-5 D-I players, has solid D, and newcomer Maddie Beck looks like a real prospect in net. St. Paul’s is definitely a team we'll be watching out for.

Worcester Academy 6 @ Southfield 3 -- Junior Carly Daly had 3 goals and the dynamic Micaela Sindoris (Northeastern) had three points as Worcester rolled aver Southfield. The downside for Worcester came when Morgan Mordini was transported to the hospital after colliding head first with the boards. Head coach Kevin Zifcak reports that Mordini's x-rays at Children's Hospital showed no damage, just pain and soreness in the spot where she went into the boards. The upside is the fact that Worcester is once again loaded with talent and looks like they will have an excellent opportunity to repeat as D2 champions.

NMH 5 @ KUA 2 -- Senior F Nicole Unsworth had two goals for the Hoggers.

Kent 2 @ Westminster 1 -- Senior F Lizzie Gross and junior F Julia Nearis each scored to keep Kent (4-0) undefeated.

Williston 2 @ Cushing 1 (OT) – Julia MacLean’s overtime goal helped Williston overcome a strong effort in goal by Cushing senior Gloria Bilafer.

Tabor 6 @ Groton 0 – Senior Kelly Browne had two goals and an assist as the Seawolves cruised past Groton

Taft 3 @ Berkshire 0 – Senior Natalie Witkowski’s two goals paced Taft in the shutout over Berkshire

@ New Hampton 8, Hebron 2 – Junior Lily Humphries hat trick led the way for the Huskies over Hebron.

St. George’s 3 @ Thayer 1 – Katie Keenan, Maddy Tregenza and Liv Haley scored to help the Dragons slip past Thayer

BB&N 0 @ Brooks 0 – Caroline Kukos's 25-save effort helped Brooks earn a hard-fought scoreless draw with BB&N.

Tabor Freshman Clark Posts Hat Trick

Marion, Mass. -- The Tabor Seawolves, ranked #1 in USHR's pre-season poll, got a hat trick from freshman Ashley Clark en route to a 4-1 win over Cushing Academy on Saturday afternoon.

Tabor senior forward Marissa Fitzgerald tallied the final Seawolves goal, while Cushing freshman Ava Alioto notched the Penguins lone goal.

Tabor is loaded with D-I talent this season and their top line of Kelly Browne (BC), Annie Berry (UNH) and Cindy Giandomenico did not disappoint, but their second line of Clark (PC), Skylar Irving (NU) and Olivia Finnochiaro (BC) was a big surprise as Clark scored both goals in the first and then again early in the third to seal the victory.

In watching Tabor we really don’t see any weakness. Their defense wasn’t tested much but is talented, led by Jillian Fey (BC). Julia Schiffman (Trinity) is a solid contributor, and sophomore Julia Shaughnessy looks like a real prospect. If Tabor gets good goaltending from newcomer Christine Steege, a sophomore, they will be tough to beat. Steege didn't face many shots Saturday.

As far as Cushing goes, it is great to see head coach Val Bono working hard to bring Cushing girls hockey back to where they once were. The Penguins competed hard throughout the game and junior forward Margaret Sullivan was all over the ice. Senior goaltender Gloria Bilafer was spectacular all night and must have had close to 40 saves

Deerfield Loses Game, and Their Captain

Deerfield, Mass. -- St. Mark's, on a goal from senior Caroline Peterson with 23 seconds remaining, stunned #8-ranked Deerfield, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Eaglebrook School Rink.

To make matters worse, Deerfield captain Meghan O’Brien broke her leg in the third period. O'Brien had to lie in center ice for over half an hour before the ambulance, which got lost, managed to find the rink.

After their leader went down, the Big Green had a hard time recovering, having a difficult time getting the puck out of their zone over the last few minutes before Peterson, a PC recruit, ended it.

Earlier, after a scoreless first period, sophomore Aurora Devereaux gave Deerfield a 1-0 lead off a beautiful feed from senior center Elizabeth Hernberg. St. Mark's junior Julianna Gong tied it early in the third off a net-front scramble.

St. Mark's looks like a team with serious playoff aspirations. Up front, Peterson, Lindsay Dumont (UNH) and Gong were all over the ice, and their back end is much improved with junior Bailey Horne playing a standout game. Sophomore Lydia Raucher looks like the real deal in net. She made some tremendous saves.

Deerfield, despite the disappointing start, looks like a very strong team. First line center Mary Edmonds was all over the ice and the second line of Hernberg, Devereaux and Mae Emerson was tremendous. Although losing captain O’Brien hurts on defense, the Big Green is very deep on the back end with Deirdre Mullowney (BC), Erin Demarco, Ali Fujiyoshi and Ali Dougal (Bowdoin) all playing standout games. Sophomore Liv Mikesell was solid in net.
