Friday Highlights

-- At Marion, Mass., Tabor’s Kristin Byrne scored a power play goal late in regulation to tie up visiting Lawrence Academy, 2-2. Tabor pressured Lawrence in OT, but Lawrence’s Lizzie Muse came up big, kicking out five shots (out of 26 total) to preserve the tie.

After a scoreless first period, LA’s Kelly Horan scored the only goal of the second period, cashing in on a breakaway after being sprung from the penalty box.

At 8:49 of the third, Tabor senior Sarah Ellins drove to the net and sophomore Caroline English knocked home the rebound to tie the game at 1-1.

Quickly afterward, LA’s Michelle Ng restored the visitor’s lead.

On the game-tying goal, Bryne converted passes from senior Marissa Gentile and junior Kelly Foley.

12/6/06

Wed. Dec. 6 Summaries

-- At Watertown, Conn., Berkshire edged host Taft, 2-1.

The first period caught the Rhinos off guard as Berkshire, with two regular season games under their belt, took it to the Rhinos, peppering senior goalie and captain Jackee Snikeris with 13 shots. Snikeris turned them all away, including an early breakaway. Taft slowly got the wheels up to speed and the first period ended 0-0.

In the second, the Rhinos came out hard. With excellent forechecking and some stingy defensive play in front of the net, the Rhinos limited the Bears to only four shots while taking nine of their own. Berkshire, though, scored twice in the period, at 2:55 and again  at 10:07. Taft got on the board on an Ashleigh Kowtoniuk goal with 17 seconds left in the period.

The third period was scoreless.

For the game, Berkshire outshot Taft, 25-19.

-- At Wallingford, Conn., the matchup between Div. I power Choate and Div. II power Greenwich Academy went to Choate, 7-6.

Choate led 2-0 after one, and 4-2 after two. In the third period, things got very interesting as the game opened up with seven goals being scored – four by Greenwich Academy and three by Choate.

For the game, Julia Ireland (1g,3a), Bray Ketchum (2g), and Audie Carter-Tracy (1g,1a) led the GA scorers. Choate hasn’t posted their roster yet so, just going off the scoresheet, we can’t tell you much about them other than the fact that #21 (we’ll assume that’s Hilary Knight) figured in six of Choate’s seven goals with a four goal, two assist day.

Final shots on goal were Choate 24, GA 23.

-- At Kent, Conn., Westminster trounced host Kent, 6-0, outshooting them 52-6. Sara Ugalde (2g), Nicole Fox (1g,1a), Kim Sirko (1g,1a), Emily Walsh (1g,1a), Katelyn Morton (2a) and Bethany Dymarczyk (2a) led the Martlets’scorers.

-- At Southborough, Mass., Nobles topped host St. Mark’s, 6-3.

--- At South Hamilton, Mass., Rivers blanked host Pingree, 9-0.

-- At Hartford, Conn., host Kingswood-Oxford topped Vermont Academy, 4-1.

-- At Deerfield, Mass., Loomis-Chaffee, on a second period goal by Alyssa Boehm, edged host Deerfield, 1-0. Assists on the goal went to Jacquelyn Berglass and Kristin Regan. Loomis outshot Deerfield, 24-15.

Tabor Upsets Nobles

Dedham, Mass. – Tabor Academy, coming off a 2-1 OT win at Cushing Saturday night, rode the momentum today, edging host Nobles, 3-2.

The winning goal, off the stick of Tabor sophomore forward Caroline English, came with 3:54 remaining in the third. Senior Sarah Ellins got the puck to Constance Jangro, who fired a shot that Nobles senior goalie Kylie Stephens made a left pad save on. But English was there to knock home the rebound to make it 3-2. Tabor held off Nobles the rest of the way and skated off with a big win.

Earlier, Nobles had the edge, getting on the board first when senior defenseman Leanna Coskren, a Harvard recruit, flew down the right side and wristed one past Tabor sophomore goalie Stephanie Ciampa to put her team up, 1-0.

Ciampa, with good support from her defensemen who battled in front, was a major factor in keeping Tabor in the game.

In the second period, Tabor cranked it up a notch, playing with grit and determination, and it paid off just 2:55 in when junior Kelly Foley, from the bottom of the right face off circle, passed it to the top of the crease where Jangro knocked it past Stephens to tie the game at 1-1.

Just nine seconds later, Tabor struck again as senior Marissa Gentile passed it to Foley, who one-timed it past Stephens to put Tabor up, 2-1.

Over the next ten minutes of play, Nobles had some good opportunities to tie it up but couldn’t convert. Tabor, due to a couple of Nobles defensive breadowns, had a chance to extend their lead, but were denied as well.

Nobles finally tied it up at 2-2 with 3:39 left in the period when freshman Denna Laing roofed one from the right face off circle.

Tabor was called for tripping late in the period, and the penalty carried over to the third. Tabor took a couple more penalties early in the third, giving Nobles 30 seconds of 5-on-3 at one point.

All period, Nobles had a number of good chances both on the power play and at even strength, but were held off by Ciampa, who came up big in net. For their part, Tabor, which lacks Nobles’ team speed,  kept working, fighting for loose pucks, going hard to the net, and battling for position in front.

And it all paid off when English scored her late goal, and Tabor held off Nobles for the final 3:54 of play. At the buzzer the Tabor players happily piled on their goalie.

Afterward, Tabor coach Kerry Nugent said, “We’re not a flashy team but we work hard. Stephanie (Ciampa) was very good in net. She’s very calm and that translates over to the rest of the team.”

”I thought we started  a little slow, but picked it up in the second, moving through the neutral zone better and going hard to the net. In the third, I thought killing off those two penalties early gave us momentum. They played hard all the way through. One thing we work on a lot is getting the puck on net and following up on rebounds.”

Nugent pointed out that the Seawolves, who gained confidence with the OT win at Cushing, can’t rest on their laurels, as they play Lawrence Friday and Berkshire Saturday.

Nobles coach Tom Resor said, “I told the girls we’d be in a lot of one and two-goal games this season. We had some chances to put them away in the first and even in the second -- and then suddenly they had the lead with two quick ones. After that, we recovered nicely even though they outplayed us in the second. In the third we had a ton of good chances. I felt we could have had more pressure in front. Tabor, though, worked extremely hard and on their goals they went hard to the net. Their goalie did a good job covering up and the defense cleared well in front of her. They’re a good team. I think this year there is a lot more depth to a lot of programs. Scoring goals will be hard.”

Nobles outshot Tabor in the game, 28-16.
