Mon. 11/22/10 -- We now have 52 girls prep schedules posted on the site (see below for complete updated list). We also have two rosters, and urge coaches to post their's when ready. We hope to make progress in this area this year! Thanks.

Help Wanted

The US Hockey Report Girls Prep Page is searching for an intern -- or interns – to help with reporting, posting the weekly composite schedule, checking it for changes, and keeping on top of anything that would be of help to the girls’ prep hockey community. For example, if there are snow days, and the schedule gets scrambled we need to be on top of it, and get the information out quickly. We also have to check and double check schedules because college recruiters count on them. Gathering jamboree and Christmas tournament schedules is another area where we need help. The ability to write short articles would be gravy, though we would need to see some examples of similar work first.

We would also like someone to be the driving force behind occasional polls, perhaps every couple of weeks.

Here at the US Hockey Report we have had great luck with interns and volunteers, and nothing is more rewarding than writing recommendations for those who have helped here. I am proud to say that several USHR interns have gone on to work in sports media in college and beyond.

We’re looking for self-starters, individuals who know where the info is and can help pull it all together.

Please contact Chris Warner at cwarner (at) ushr.com if you are interested in working for the U.S. Hockey Report.

We should also point out, though it is probably pretty obvious, that the US Hockey Report – on the girls’ side -- is a complete money-losing proposition, and has been for a long time. It’s my personal money pit, and stems from my feeling that it would be wrong to have a boys site and not a girls site. However, it’s important to keep the site going. We first need to take steps toward breaking even. Once we are able to do that, perhaps we can take further steps towards building the site. But we must come up with ways to raise money. We’d rather not go to the subscription model that we use on the boys’ side, at least not for now. We’re thinking more along the lines of voluntary contributions. If anyone has any ideas or experience in this area we would certainly like to hear from them.

In recent years, virtually all of the rosters and game scores have been entered by one USHR volunteer – our angel, you could say. This is totally different than the way the boys’ site operates. On the boys’ side, every coach puts up his own roster, schedule, box scores – absolutely everything. It’s what makes the site popular and has also brought interest to the prep game from far-flung corners of North America. This is a fact: there are boys playing prep school hockey whose parents had never even heard of or considered prep school until discovering the U.S. Hockey Report. And we’re talking about some high-end players, too, mostly from the Western U.S. and Canada. The girls’ game can benefit from a little of that, too! There are a lot of girls sticking with their youth programs who might really enjoy prep school, but don’t consider it, because they don’t know enough. It’s true that we provide the basics -- schedules, scores and standings. But if we can somehow ramp up coverage of the girls’ prep game, and convey in greater detail the value and fun to be had by taking that route, more quality players will become interested. In the final analysis, the USHR girls’ section is 100% free advertising for girls prep hockey.
