Governor's Rule
Belmont, Mass. -- Governor's Academy, which has gone a long while since winning a game on Belmont Hill's big sheet, scored a pair of third period goals to come from behind and defeat their hosts, 3-2.

On the game-winner, a power-play tally, senior Cody Ferriero blasted a shot from five feet inside the blue line. The rebound came out to senior Jake Picking, who fired it past Derek Metcalfe at the 12:54 mark to give Governor's their only lead of the day, and one they would hold onto until they skated off with the win.

Earlier, Governor's got out to an inauspicious start, as they fell behind just 1:14 into the game when, on the power play, Belmont Hill junior forward Alex DeBaere tipped one past Governor's senior goaltender Luke Montoni for the 1-0 lead.

After that, Montoni got tough in the Governor's net, holding Belmont Hill at bay and likely wondering when -- or if -- his teammates would score one against Metcalfe.

That goal came when Governor's senior center Brett Riley ripped one from the slot at the 6:21 mark of the second, tying the game at 1-1.

Belmont Hill got it back with 2:33 left in the period when sophomore center Devin Albert walked out of the corner and, crossing the top of the crease, tucked a beautiful top-shelf backhander past Montoni to give his team a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission.

Governor's came out hard in the third period, carrying the play from the opening faceoff. Belmont Hill seemed to be caught flatfooted by the visitors, and responded by taking unnecessary penalties.

On the tying goal, a power play tally at the 5:01 mark, Governor's senior defenseman Tim Winslow head-manned a nice little offensive zone pass up to junior forward Nick Wirth, who swept it past Metcalfe to make it 2-2.

Governor's kept right at it, and their efforts paid off with Picking's game-winner.

In the final couple of minutes, Belmont Hill regrouped and peppered Montoni, but couldn't solve him.

"We came together in the third period," said Governor's head coach Mike Delay. "Belmont Hill is quick and we struggled to contain them for large portions of the game. In the third period we executed much better. This is a good morale-booster for the team. They see now what they are capable of doing. Hopefully, we can build on this. In the first period Luke Montoni stood on his head to give us a chance - and in the third period we were able to respond a bit."

Ken Martin, Belmont Hill's coach, wasn't happy with the way his team let this one slip from their grasp. "I thought the penalties we took in the third period killed us. And I don't think we did very well on the power play. I thought our goalie played well, though. But they definitely outplayed us in the third period."

-- Bel Hill was without senior center John Caldwell, who was called for a hit-from-behind in Saturday's win over Nobles.

-- Governor's outshot Belmont Hill, 33-31.

-- In case anyone is wondering, we try not to cover the same teams in back-to-back games.(On Saturday, we also covered a Bel Hill game, vs. Nobles). However, the weather and ensuing cancellations caused a change in today's plans.
