KUA KO’d
A year after sending just one team to Salem, NH for prep hockey’s Final Four, the Connecticut boarding schools made a clean sweep of things today as all four Connecticut schools won – and all non-Connecticut schools lost.
Last year at this time, only one school from the Nutmeg State was making its way to the big stage. That, of course, was Salisbury, and they were eliminated in the semifinals. This year, three of the four teams going – Kent, Salisbury, and Westminster -- are from the Founders’ League. And two of them had to really work to get there, as both Salisbury and Westminster needed OT. Hats off to them.
And hats off to #8 Gunnery, too. They didn’t need OT. All they did was put their end-of-the season two-game losing streak in the rear view mirror by playing David to #1 Kimball Union’s Goliath -- and coming out on top, 4-1.
Quarterfinals Highlights
Stuart/Corkery Tournament (Elite 8):
#7 Westminster 3 @ #2 Belmont Hill 2 (OT) – Westminster PG F Ethan Holdaway (2g,1a) figured in all three of Westminster’s goals today, but it is the last one, when the Trinity recruit buried a partial breakaway, tucking the puck behind Belmont Hill junior goalie Ryan McConnell at 8:23 of OT, that will be remembered, as it gave the Martlets their 8th win in a row and propelled them to the Final Four, where they will face Salisbury in the second semifinal on Friday (8:00 pm).
Earlier, in the first period, Holdaway’s line, centered by senior Vincent Gisonti and with senior Ryan Mowery on the opposite wing, scored both of Westy’s goals, putting them up 2-0 midway through the period.
Belmont Hill came back, though, carrying the play at the end of the first and right through the second. Midway through the second, a Mike Najjar centering pass off the half wall deflected in to cut Westminster’s lead to 2-1, and that’s where things stayed for a long stretch. Late in the third, Bel Hill had a power play with 3:47 to go but, despite some good opportunities, couldn’t get the equalizer. That would come a few minutes later when, with McConnell pulled for the extra attacker, junior Joe Welch found Will Golonka alone at the back door. Golonka buried it to send the game to OT, where, at the 8:23 mark, Holdaway sent Westminster on to the next round. Westminster has been a perfect 8-0-0 in February, and will hope March is as kind. They face off against Salisbury Friday night at 8:00 pm in the second semifinal.
Belmont Hill outshot Westminster, 43-20, though it didn’t really seem that lopsided. Belmont Hill’s forwards had to generate a lot of offense coming out of their own end, and would wind up flinging a lot of shots on net and following up nicely, looking for rebounds. They had plenty of good opportunities, too, though there weren’t as many plays made down low as the shots on goal would indicate. That said, Westminster junior goalie Zac Hamilton was sharp, and wound up stopping 41 of 43.
#6 Salisbury 3 @ #3 Berkshire 2 (OT) -- A point shot off the stick of junior defenseman Will Toffey while Salisbury was on the power play at 12:33 of OT lifted #6 seed Salisbury to a 3-2 win over host – and #3 seed – Berkshire.
The two teams traded goals in the first period. Berkshire got on the board just seconds in on a goal from junior Tipper Higgins, but Salisbury junior Evan Smith – who would figure in all three Salisbury goals before the day was done -- was able to answer at the 14:23 mark.
After a scoreless second period, Higgins, with his team on the PP, struck again – his 20th goal of the season – to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. However, Salisbury senior D Willie Brooks evened things up at 2-2 with 4:28 remaining to send the game to OT.
Salisbury outshot Berkshire, 34-25. Sophomore Callum Booth (23/25) got the win; senior Tim Ernst (31/34) took the loss.
The Crimson Knights move on, and face Westminster in the second semi on Friday (8:00 pm).
#8 Gunnery 4, #1 Kimball Union 1 (at Deerfield Academy) – After a scoreless first period, Gunnery senior F Robert Darrar put his team up 1-0 at 4:49 of the second. Several minutes later, KUA answered when senior D Doyle Somerby cashed in on the power play to make it 1-1. But that was it as far as KUA scoring went. Meanwhile, Gunnery answered with three straight tallies, from senior Marc Cibelli, junior Chris Cobham, and senior Anthony Bird.
In net, Gunnery senior Dawson Sprigings kicked out 27 of the 28 shots he faced for the win, but he wasn’t really forced to stand on his head or anything. He was steady as a rock, making all the saves he was expected to. The real key to this game was the team effort Gunnery showed, running a 1-2-2 to perfection, bottling up the high-powered Wildcat forwards and forcing them into 1-on-1 attempts to get their offense going. And it never did get going.
And, with that, it will be Gunnery that is going to Salem this weekend. They take on Kent in the first semifinal on Friday (5:30 pm).
#4 Kent 7, #5 Dexter 1 (@ Loomis) – Junior Anthony Rinaldi notched a hat trick to lead the Lions’ attack. Junior Lewis Zerter-Gossage (2a) and senior D Mike Graham (2a) each had two points for Kent, which outshot Dexter 35-22. Kent will face Gunnery in the first semifinal on Friday (5:30 pm).
Martin/Earl Tournament (Large School):
@ #3 Avon 8, #6 Choate 0 – The #3-seeded Winged Beavers had no problem with the #6-seeded Wild Boars today, outshooting their visitors 44-14 and outscoring them 8-0.
Junior Nick Hutchison (1g,3a), senior Peter McGinley (2g,1a), soph Chase Zieky (1g,1a), senior Mason Krueger (1g,1a), and junior Sam Levin (1g,1a) led the attack.
Junior Cody Doyle, with 14 saves, earned the shutout. Avon will go up against Thayer Academy in a semifinal tilt on Saturday (5:30 pm).
@ #1 Cushing 4, #8 Governor’s 2 – Cushing got goals from four different scorers and senior Mike Dion stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced for the win. Gov’s senior Brendan McMenimen stopped (45/49) took the loss.
Lucas Bombardier (1g,1a) and Nathan Ferriero (2a) figured in both Gov’s goals.
Cushing faces Exeter Saturday at 3:00 pm.
#5 Exeter 6 @ #4 Milton 3 – PGs Jake Lessick (2g,3a) and Colby Cretella (2g,2a) led Exeter’s attack. And senior John Cross (1g,2a) wasn’t far behind.
For Milton, seniors Elliot Vorel (1g,2a) and Anthony Sabitsky (2g) supplied the bulk of the offense.
@ #2 Thayer 4, #7 St. Sebastian’s 3 (OT) -- An OT goal from senior Jon Sheedy sent the Tigers to Salem, where they will face Avon Old Farms in a Saturday semifinal (5:30 pm).
Thayer went up early, behind consecutive goals from freshman Ty Amonte and a single tally from sophomore D Jack Judge.
St. Seb’s, down 3-0 late in the second, came up with three unanswered goals – from Tommy Kelley, John Doherty, and Jake McLaughlin – to make it a 3-3 game with a little over seven minutes to play. And that’s where it stayed, until Sheedy came through.
St. Seb’s outshot Thayer, 42-39. Tigers junior goaltender kicked out 39 shots for the win.
Piatelli/Simmons Tournament (Small School):
@ #3 Brooks 4, #6 Middlesex 0 --- Brooks cashed in on a pair of power plays in the first period, getting goals from freshman D Connor Moore and senior F Greg Conrad. Senior Andrew Bruno added an even-strength goal early in the second to make it 3-0, and that was all they needed. Mitch Nylen had two assists, and Moore, in addition to his goal, notched an assist. Senior Colin Langham stopped all 19 shots he faced.
#1 Kents Hill 4, #8 Millbrook 1 (@ Lawrence Academy) – Junior forwards Jared Cockrell (1g,2a) and Oscar Croon (1g,2a) each had three points and senior D Logan Day (1g,1a) chipped in with two to lead Kents Hill today.
Millbrook outshot Kents Hill by a healthy margin --- 31-17 – but Kents Hill junior goaltender Kyle Porter came up big, kicking out 30 of 31 to send his team on to Salem for the semifinals on Saturday.
Note:
Two postponed games will be played Thursday afternoon: They are: #7 Holderness @ #2 Rivers (4:15 pm), and #5 Tilton @ #4 Winchendon (5:00 pm).
