RPI & JSPR, Thurs. noon 2/21/13

Notes:

-- Dexter does not have a strong schedule, so even though their RPI (#5) is good they lose comparisons to Kent and Exeter, both of whom are below them in RPI but ahead of them in record against TUC's and common opponents. Dexter has a great won-loss record at 20-1-5 but they have only played four of the top teams. The key is that, unlike previous years, they have lost only one game all season, which is no small thing. So, while their margin of error is much smaller than other teams because of their schedule, they should be in the Elite 8 tourney if they win out.

-- Gunnery compares favorably with everyone below them in RPI -- except Kent, to whom they have lost twice in head-to-head play this season. In addition, Kent now has a better TUC record than Gunnery due, in significant part, to Canterbury dropping out the top 16 (they are at #17 now). That’s a blow to Gunnery, which has a 2-0-1 record vs. Canterbury. Last week, Gunnery had a better TUC record than Kent and therefore won the JSPR comparison between the two schools. Yesterday, however, Gunnery lost to a top 16 team and Canterbury dropped out of the top 16, hence they now lose the comparison with Kent.

-- As of today, three small schools – KUA, Gunnery, and Dexter -- would make the Elite 8. After that, there are only two other small schools – Kents Hill and Rivers -- before you get to #24-29 slots in the RPI rankings, at which point you find six small schools in a row. We feel this speaks well to the concept of having both large school and small school tournaments -- in addition to the Elite 8, of course.

-- The top 8 in RPI are also currently in the Elite 8 tournament, so the RPI/JSPR correlation is pretty high right now. That can change. Keep in mind that JSPR just takes everything to a finer point by means of measuring the best against the best.

-- Here are some weekend games that bear watching -- and why:

Canterbury @ Salisbury (4:30 pm Fri.) --A Canterbury win would drop Salisbury, but would also catapult Canterbury back into the top 16, thus affecting Gunnery, Kent, Berkshire and other top teams who have played Canterbury.

St. Sebastian's @ Thayer
(2:00 pm Sat.)  -- Two top 16 teams, though both near the bottom (Thayer is at #11 and St. Seb’s is at #16). A loss could drop either one out of the top 16 and thus mix things up above them.

Gunnery @ Berkshire
(2:30 pm Sat.) -- Two top 8 teams could affect things a lot as it will affect TUC records of both teams.

Kent @ Choate (5:00 pm Sat.) -- Two top 16 teams. Kent is higher than Choate due to a better TUC record, though this game could affect that.

-- Finally, snow could be the biggest challenge this weekend. It is projected to arrive Saturday afternoon, though the National Weather Service reports that the heaviest snow will come overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning. Whatever the case, Salisbury vs. Canterbury and Westminster vs. Deerfield have been moved to Friday while Cushing has moved up the start time of their Saturday home game by a couple of hours. Look for more changes to follow. Hopefully, all games get played. Remember, games played through Saturday count toward the NEPSHIA playoff standings. Anything after that does not (see Lakes Region tournament). This could be a huge deal as only games that are played count -- and every game affects the standings in some way.

 6. Cushing
 7. BB&N

  6. Rivers
  7. Middlesex
  8. Millbrook
