Let the Games Begin
Before the new season begins, we'd like to offer a quick refresher on last season, a campaign that started well and finished with a top-flight playoff series, the best we've seen in years.
Last Season's Champions:
Elite 8 -- (#2) Avon Old Farms 3, (#1) Cushing 1 -- Avon, on the back of senior goaltender Stephen Peck's 45 saves, won its 9th Prep Title under head coach John Gardner, a record unlikely to be broken for a long, long time -- if ever.
Elite 8 Semifinals:
@ (#1) Cushing 2, (#5) Brunswick 1
@ (#2) Avon 7, (#6) Belmont Hill 2
Elite 8 Quarterfinals:
@ (#1) Cushing 6, (#8) Kimball Union 2
@ (#2) Avon Old Farms 5, (#7) Westminster 1
(#6) Belmont Hill 7 @ (#3) Milton Academy 2
(#5) Brunswick 3 @ (#4) Nobles 2 (OT)
Large School -- (#1) Taft 3, (#2) Salisbury 2 (OT) -- Taft junior goaltender Rudy Guimond sparkled, kicking out 39 shots, many of the Grade A variety, and junior D Alex Kenerson stepped up with the game-winner at 8:18 of OT. The two schools had faced off against each other twice in the regular season, with each taking a 3-2 win...in OT.
Large School Semifinals:
@ (#1) Taft 4, (#5) Tabor 1
@ (#2) Salisbury 3, (#3) Dexter 1
Large School Quarterfinals:
@ (#1) Taft 5, (#8) Kent 3
@ (#2) Salisbury 4, (#7) Loomis 3 (OT)
@ (#3) Dexter 6, (#6) NMH 2
(#5) Tabor 6 @ (#4) St. Sebastian's 3
Small School -- (#4) Lawrence Academy 4, (#3) Frederick Gunn 3 (OT) -- Gunn held a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but LA came back with a pair of goals. The tying goal came with 22 seconds remaining, sending it to OT, where, at 8:18 junior Owen Leahy came through with the game-winner.
Small School Semifinals:
@ (#4) Lawrence 4, (#8) New Hampton 3
@ (#3) Frederick Gunn 3, (#2) Holderness 2 (OT)
Small School Quarterfinals:
(#8) New Hampton 5 @ (#1) St. Mark's 4 (OT)
@ (#2) Holderness 3, (#7) Brooks 1
@ (#3) Frederick Gunn 5, (#6) Tilton 4
@ (#4) Lawrence Academy 5, (#5) Governor's 0
USHR's 2023 Players of the Year
USHR's 2023 Player of the Year: Stephen Peck, Avon goaltender
Peck led Avon Old Farms to an Elite 8 title with a huge 45-save effort vs. Cushing. A Michigan commit now playing in Bismarck (NAHL), the senior from NYC posted a 1.26/.948 line for the Winged Beavers.
Guimond, a junior at Taft and 2025 Yale recruit, backstopped the Rhinos to a Large School Championship with a sparkling OT win over Salisbury. The Quebec native, who finished the season with a 2.43/.943 line, is playing his senior season in Cedar Rapids (USHL).

Sun. 11/19/23Large School/Small School Breakdown
Here's the Large School/Small School breakdown for the '23-'24 season. For those of you new to prep hockey, and to USHR, the breakdown plays a role in the post-season seeding. More on that as the weeks pass. Suffice to say, the difference begins to play an increasingly larger role as teams get deeper into their seasons and RPI and JSPR become increasingly meaningful.
The schools in the left-hand column are large; those in the right-hand college are small.
It's also what allows for three separate post-season tournaments -- the Open (i.e., Elite 8). the Large School, and the Small School tournaments.

Welcome to 2023-24!
The 2023-24 Girls' Prep Pages are now officially open.
All of last season’s news, rosters, schedules, and stats have been archived, and new material will start going into this season’s pages immediately, as coaches begin to upload their teams' schedules.
We want to remind new readers of features we have introduced over the last several seasons. Players’ career prep statistics, for one. If you click on a player’s name on the roster you will see her final stats for all the seasons she has played prep hockey and, of course, running totals for the current season. If you click on a year, say 2020-21, it will show a player's game-by-game statistics. We don't have as much of this info on the girls' side as on the boys' side -- nothing remotely close, actually -- but the girls' game is growing by leaps and bounds, and we can dream, right? It's simply a matter of coaches deciding it's worth their time.
It is also possible to download rosters, schedules, and all statistics pages in PDF form, giving pages a cleaner look when printed out. You may be familiar with them. Many prep schools use them on the rosters you pick up on your way into the rink.
Pretty much all columns are sortable. Just click on the top of the column. This is useful for, among other things, separating scoring and goaltending leaders by school, birth year, position, points, etc.
We’ve also done a lot of work on the back end, mainly behind-the-scenes stuff that you probably won’t notice beyond the fact that the site will run more smoothly than ever. We endeavor to make these improvements each season.
We will also be posting jamboree and holiday tournament schedules. Look for those to start going up over the coming weeks as well. Note to coaches: please send 'em along, to staff@ushr.com
Of course, we will have the news coverage you have come to expect. More, hopefully. We are looking for reliable and unbiased reporters who can help provide more. And skilled photographers who can capture game action. Please contact cwarner@ushr.com
Welcome to the new season. We're glad to be here. We’re glad you’re here. And, as always, we thank you for your support.
