Cummings & Freshmen Lead Belmont Hill Past St. Mark's
Belmont Hill, Mass. -- A short-handed strike from freshman forward Patrick Woods and a 21-save performance by fellow freshman JJ Thibodeau led Belmont Hill to a 4-1 win over St. Mark's here today.
The game's turning point came midway through the second period. With the score knotted at 1-1 and St. Mark's just 37 seconds into a powerplay, Belmont Hill senior center Brock Cummings swooped in on the forecheck, stripped the puck from the St. Mark's d-man on the goal line, pivoted, and, spotting an uncovered Woods flying down the slot, put a centering pass on his stick. The freshman wasted no time, snapping a quick wrister past St. Mark's senior goalie Jeevan Anand for what would prove to be the game-winner.
This Keller vs. Eberhart matchup was a good one from the opening faceoff, with a great pace, physical play, and up-and-down action. The game's first goal didn't come until 1:13 into the second when Belmont Hill senior forward Dane Carter cleaned up the rebound of a shot from sophomore d-man Lindan Verville. St. Mark's answered at the 8:06 mark, with sophomore Richard Gallant tucking the rebound of a Jimmie Lyver shot past Thibodeau to tie the game at 1-1. And that is how things stood for just a little over a minute, until Cummings and Woods teamed up to put the Hillies ahead to stay.
Belmont Hill would add a pair of goals in the third, with senior captain Ronan O'Donnell scoring on a 10-foot wrister that beat Anand high glove side at 6:53 and junior Jake McManus scoring on a wraparound with a little under four minutes remaining to make it 4-1 and putting the game out of reach for the visitors.
For the game, Belmont Hill had a 38-22 edge in shots.
For Bel Hill (8-4-2), it was their third straight win, and it put a halt to St. Mark's (10-3-0) four-game win streak. Both teams hit the road for their next games, heading on Saturday to seaside destinations. Belmont Hill (8-4-2) will be at Tabor, and St. Mark's (10-3-0) will be at St. George's.

@ Westminster 5, Canterbury 4 -- Westminster needed every last bit of the 5-1 lead it built through two periods to hold on and edge Canterbury despite the Saints' three unanswered goals in the third. Senior Jed Brazo (1g,1a) led the way for the Saints. Senior Chase Arnett (1g,2a) and junior Michael Bianco (2g) paced the Martlets. Junior goalie Matteo De Luca kicked out 24 of 28 shots for the win.
@ Frederick Gunn 7, Millbrook 0 -- Senior Michael Markowski and junior Alex LoGuercio potted two goals apiece and junior goalie Mitchell McCusker posted an 18-save shutout as the Highlanders rolled at home against Millbrook.
Proctor 2 @ St. Paul's 1 -- Two Proctor defensemen scored powerplay goals in the second -- junior Max O'Connell and senior Colin Kwak -- the latter of which stood up as the game-winner. The lone SPS goal came in the third, on the PP by junior Lino Viau. Hornets' sophomore goalie Chris Dakers went 26/27 in the win.
Portsmouth Abbey 2 @ Pingree 2 (OT) -- Pingree scored twice in the first and Abbey scored twice in the second, but nobody found the back of the net in the third or OT, despite six minor penalties in that time. Patrick McDevitt, Abbey's junior goalie, saved 23 of 25 shots. In the Pingree net, junior Nick Hubbard was 43/45.
@ Avon Old Farms 3, NMH 0 -- Behind Stephen Peck's 22-save shutout and goals from seniors Arthur Mirante, Joe Odyniec, and Nick Capasso, Avon blanked the Hoggers and handed NMH its fourth loss in six games. NMH junior goalie Tommy Adams (28/31) took the loss.
North Yarmouth Academy 3 @ Holderness 2 -- NYA scored twice in the final four minutes of regulation and dropped the Bulls to 9-4-0 on the year. Senior Louka Vamvakas tied the game with 3:16 remaining before classmate Daxton St. Hilaire won it with 1:01 left. Senior Aidan Farion (35/37) was the winner in net. Holderness junior Kolin Belliveau (20/23) took the loss.
Governor's 1 @ Groton 1 (OT) -- This one was a goaltenders' battle between Governor's senior Max LaCroix (30/31) and Groton junior Ethan Ramonetti (42/43). The stalemate was the third tie of the season for each side. Junior Devin Fitzgerald of Groton scored in the first; junior Michael Ranaldi of Gov's scored in the second.
Loomis Chaffee 2 @ Taft 1 (OT) -- Loomis senior Will Reardon, a Holy Cross recruit, tipped Eli Hull's shot past Taft goaltender Rudy Guimond to lift the visitors to an OT road win. It was a battle of two top goaltenders, as both Guimond (38/40) and Loomis senior Andrew Heinze (22/23) were stellar. Taft had led 1-0 on sophomore Preston Hidy's goal in the second before Loomis tied it up less than two minutes later on junior Cory Alissi's goal.
@ Salisbury 11, Trinity-Pawling 3 -- The Knights scored three goals in the first, four in the second, and four in the third, banishing some recent frustration while coasting to a home decision over one-win T-P. Junior G Cooper Flemming (19/22) earned the win. Junior F Nicolas Petrut (1g,5a) more than doubled his season point total, and senior Hayden Hanes (2g, 2a) and junior Anthony Biakabutuka (1g,3a) tallied four points each. The Pride lifted sophomore Gavin Geraghty after two periods and a 34/41 start, but junior Ethan Fehrenbaker (12/16) didn't fare much better in the third.
Hotchkiss 1 @ Kent 1 (OT) -- Kent junior Jack Roberts scored in the final minute of the second, but Hotchkiss junior D Michael Buenzow evened the score late in the third. A scoreless OT cemented the draw. Neither of the game's senior goaltenders, Kent's Harrison Fogel (24/25) or Hotchkiss's Grant Kloeber (30/31), was to be outdueled.
Kimball Union 4 @ Deerfield 3 -- His team trailing 2-1 as the game entered the middle of the third period, KUA junior F Sam LeDrew scored two goals -- just over five minutes apart -- to propel the Wildcats to a road win over Deerfield. The Big Green had established the early lead on goals by junior Tom Molson and senior Thomas Moreau. Deerfield's goalie, junior John Tolve, was 32/35 in the loss. Opposite him, KUA senior Dan Heroux, was 30/33 in the victory.
Andover 3 @ St. Sebastian's 3 (OT) -- Seb's trailed 3-1 with eight minutes left in the game, before junior Nolan Flynn came to the rescue with two goals in 20 seconds to tie the game at 3-3, where the score would stay for good. Andover had built a 2-1 lead after the first and extended it to 3-1 in the second, but failed to hold it.
@ Milton 3, Lawrence 1 -- Sam Caulfield, Milton's sophomore netminder who won MVP honors at December's Flood-Marr Tournament, made 27 stops on 28 shots to help the Mustangs to their 10th win of the year. Classmate Anthony Sergeyev (1g,1a) led the Mustang attack. LA's Jake Lewis scored a 6x5 goal with 2:11 left, but Milton answered with an empty-netter to seal the game. By the way, Caulfield, over his last three games, has allowed a total of two goals on 96 shots.
@ Thayer 4, Cushing 2 -- The Tigers, who entered the game 4-9-1, handed Cushing, previously unbeaten in 15 games, its first loss of the season. A run of three goals in the final five minutes of the first, by sophomores Teddy Lally, Tommy Anderson, and Charlie Wilkinson, put Thayer in front for good. Tigers' senior goalie Beau Lane (35/37) outdid Cushing senior Cooper Rautenstrauch (19/22) between the pipes.
@ Dexter Southfield 8, Austin Prep 0 -- Senior goalie Max Gatti saved all 12 shots he faced as Dexter blanked AP to climb to 7-5-5. Seniors Joe Hurton, Connor Sutherland, and Mick Frechette racked up three points apiece to lead Dexter.
@ Choate 4, Berkshire 3 -- The late-game heroics of juniors Owen Tunney -- who tied the game with 1:39 left -- and Benjamin Darche -- who scored the game-winner with 40 seconds remaining -- gave Choate its first win of the year on its 13th try. Sophomore Gordie Leary got his second start in net for the Wild Boars and kicked out 37 of 40 shots for the win. Berkshire's Danick Leroux, a Holy Cross commit, went 27/31 and took the loss. Among teams with 10 or more games played, only Roxbury Latin (0-10-1) remains winless.
Tilton 3 @ Brewster 2 (OT) -- Tilton senior D Cam Quigley scored the game-winner, from Tyson Sylvia and Kai Tsoar, with 35 seconds left in OT. The Rams have won 11 of 15. Earlier, Brewster PG Tyler Wasler had tied the game in the final five minutes of regulation. Rams' senior G Ben Ashton (30/32) picked up the win.
@ Winchendon 6, Hoosac 3 -- With the game tied 3-3 after two periods, Winchendon exploded for three third-period goals and won handily over the one-win Owls. Juniors Brendan Coughlin, Eli Deener-Chordirker, and Brock Bergeron scored the Wapitis' goals in the final frame. Winchendon junior goaltender Giovanni Calvanese (28/31) earned the win; Hoosac senior Trey Thompkins (41/46) took the loss.
@ Worcester 6, Pomfret 5 -- WA junior Connor Dozois capped his second hat trick of the season with the game-winner at 8:42 of the third. Senior teammate Ethan Jasmin (2g,3a) also came up big for the Hilltoppers, figuring in all but one of his team's goals. Pomfret, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, got two more goals from sophomore Luke Corrigan, who has five in his last four games. Freshman Wes DiModica (24/29) of Worcester was the winner in goal; Pomfret's Beau Johnson (17/22) took the loss.
BB&N 4 @ St. George's 0 -- Behind two goals from senior Paul McNiff and one each from seniors Will Rice and Alex Sandell, BB&N (3-11-1) blanked St. George's (10-4-0) on the road. It marked the first division loss of the season for the Dragons, who fall into second place in the ISL's Eberhart Division.
@ Berwick 2, Kents Hill 0 -- Behind a 26-save shutout from sophomore Matthew Pimentel, Berwick jumped to 7-9-0. Junior Michael Delage scored in the first. Sophomore Tanner Petalas scored a powerplay goal in the second.
