Taft 3 @ Avon 2 -- Taft junior goaltender Rudy Guimond was the story in this one, kicking out 55 of the 57 shots he faced as the Rhinos handed #1 Avon Old Farms its first loss of the season. Taft only mustered 14 shots on Avon senior G Stephen Peck, but three of them found the back of the net.
Avon took a 1-0 first-period lead on a goal from senior wing Joe Odyniec, a UConn commit. From that point until the 11:45 mark of the third, when Odyniec scored his second goal, Guimond was peppered, but nothing got past him.
Taft got on the board late in the second period on junior F Derek Tremblay's goal, tying the game at 1-1. Early in the third, Taft took a 2-1 lead on a goal from senior F Jackson Holl. Four minutes later, Rhinos junior F Shane Mettler pushed it to 3-1 with what would prove to be the game-winner.
Taft, in its first home game of the season back on December 7th -- suffered a 3-1 loss to the Winged Beavers. Avon also had a large shot advantage (48-24) in that one. So going into today, they knew what Guimond could do -- but came up short nonetheless.
North Yarmouth Academy 3 @ Roxbury Latin 2 -- A James Brogan-Provencher goal midway through the second would prove to be the game-winner. But this was a goalies' game, as NYA senior Aidan Farion (35/37) earned the win, while RL junior Evan Zhang (46/49) took the tough loss.
Berkshire 3 @ Williston Northampton 2 -- Berkshire senior F Clay O'Donnell scored a pair of first-period goals, but -- as Williston scored a late ENG -- it was Walker Bright's third-period goal that turned out to be the game-winner. Berkshire senior G Cole O'Donnell (Clay's brother) picked up the win, kicking out 40 of 42 shots. Williston PG Tyler Kirk (26/29) put in a solid effort at the other end. After starting the season with four straight losses, Berkshire has righted the ship, winning five of its last nine.
@ Portsmouth Abbey 5, Berwick 3 -- The Abbey broke a 3-3 third-period tie on a PPG from sophomore Hunter McCarthy, and added an empty-netter in the final minute to take the home win. Senior Josh Bonrouhi added two goals for the Ravens.
@ Pomfret 4, St. George's 1 -- Junior Louie Marcellino scored his first career hat trick and classmate Zach Bloxam turned aside 32 of 33 shots to lead the Griffins to the home win.
@ Cushing 5, Proctor 1 -- Watkins Tournament MVP F Landan Resendes followed up that performance with a three-point game (2g,1a). Linemates Ethan Gardula (3a) and Emerson Marshall (1g,1a) also came through for the Penguins, who outshot Proctor, 44-8, and stay undefeated at 9-0-3.
Hotchkiss 4 @ Millbrook 3 -- The Bearcats never trailed in this one, getting goals from four different scorers and a 21-save effort from sophomore G Connor Towle to even up their season record at 4-4-0.
@ Exeter 2, St. Pauls 2 (OT) -- Senior D Jack O'Brien's second goal of the game, at 12:57 of the third, salvaged the tie for host Exeter. Exeter senior G Michael Salvatore (33/35) and SPS sophomore Treva Murphy (35/37) kept this one tight throughout.
@ St. Sebastian's 4, Belmont Hill 3 -- Seb's, trailing 3-1 at home after two, scored three unanswered goals in the third -- from sophomore Teddy Mutryn (his second of the game), and juniors Nolan Flynn and Isaac Mitchell. Three of the Arrows' four goals came on special-teams play -- a SHG, a 5x4, and a 5x3. Junior Pelle Russo (32/35) earned the win. The Arrows improve to 9-3-0; Belmont Hill, the Elite 8 runners-up last season, falls to 5-4-2.
Andover 6 @ Choate 3 -- Andover held a 5-0 third-period lead, but allowed the host Wild Boars to get into it with three consecutive goals before salting it away with an empty-netter. Senior C Nolan Roche and senior wing Joey Zheng each had two goals for the Big Blue.
St. Mark's 5 @ Tabor 2 -- Sophomore forwards Drew Carr (2g) and Richard Gallant (2a) each notched two points, as did defensemen Maddox Lizotte (1g,1a) and Calvin Beard (2a). Senior G Jeevan Anand stopped 28 of 30 shots. And St. Mark's has won eight of its last nine.
@ Milton 2, Tilton 1 -- The Mustangs got goals from senior forwards Mikka Kelechian and Brendan Maher, and sophomore G Sam Caulfield (38/39) came up big, putting the kibosh on Tilton's offense, which came into the game averaging 5 GPG. Milton improves to 8-3-2. Tilton drops to 9-2-0.
@ Westminster 6, Trinity-Pawling 3 -- Senior Wade Volo (2g,2a) and sophomore Quinn Pine (2g,1a) led the Martlets attack, and junior G Matteo DeLuca (25/28) picked up the win.
@ Pingree 3, Kents Hill 1 -- Pingree got goals from sophomore forwards Max Guertin, Trevor Payne, and Theo Dimopoulos. Visiting Kents Hill hurt themselves by taking way too many penalties: seven, to be exact, including a game misconduct and two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct.
@ Deerfield 3, Salisbury 3 --- The defending prep champions, playing on the road, trailed 3-0 midway through the third but rallied with three goals over the last five minutes, with the game-tying tally, from senior F Hayden Hanes, coming with 9 seconds left. Deerfield junior G John Tolve (33/36) had a big game for the big Green. Salisbury junior Cooper Flemming kicked out 20 of 23 shots. Salisbury is 7-3-2, Deerfield is 4-4-1.
Nobles 1 @ Thayer 0 -- Freshman forward Billy MacAusland scored the only goal Nobles needed, and sophomore G Thatcher Bernstein posted a 21-save shutout. Thayer senior Beau Lane (19/20) took the hard-luck loss. Nobles improves to 10-1-1; Thyer is 4-7-1.
Albany Academy 5 @ Hill 2 -- Luke Kurdziolek (1g,2a), Michael Malatino (2g), and Jack Darby (2a) led the Cadets' attack. AA had been ahead, 3-0, late in the second period, but goals from Hill junior D Jack O'Brien and senior F Ryan Kearney pulled the hosts to within one. AA scored two empty-netters to seal it. Albany Academy improves to 7-2-0.
Holderness 2 @ Rivers 1 (OT) -- A goal from junior F Caden Wells midway through OT lifted the Bulls to the road win. Holderness improves to 7-2-0.
@ Loomis 4, Kent 4 -- In a back-and-forth contest, Kent scored a pair of goals early in the third to go up, 3-2. But Loomis answered with a pair of their own, striking twice within a minute-and-a-half to snatch it back, and take a 4-3 lead. Kent had the last word, though, as a goal from junior Jack Roberts with 53 seconds left, assisted by classmate Braden Pohlman, lifted the visitors to the 4-4 tie. Junior center Ryan Staples had two of Loomis's goals.
Brooks 5 @ Groton 2 -- Senior forward Will Rassier notched a hat trick, the final tally coming on an empty-netter, lifting Brooks to the road win. Brooks held what appeared to be a comfortable 4-0 lead with three minutes remaining, but Groton quickly struck for a pair to make it 4-2. Groton pulled its goalie, but no dice, as Rassier found the back of the net.
