Changing of the Guard, Exeter Style

Exeter hosts Hoosac today, and it's the first NEPSIHA game of the season. It is also, since the pandemic made a total hash of last season, the first official NEPSIHA game in 20 months.

Today's game will also mark the first time Exeter has had a new head coach in 30 years, as Tim Mitropoulos, an eight-year assistant at the school, takes over the head position from Dana Barbin. Barbin, with 500 plus wins under his belt, has downsized himself, becoming an assistant coach, the same post he took on when he was hired at Exeter in 1987. Back then, Barbin was 29, a former UNH forward who went on to play pro in Denmark. (While there, Barbin became a player/coach and later coached the Danish National Team for two seasons. Denmark was also where he met his future wife, Marianne.) At Exeter he served under Bill Dennehy for several seasons before taking over as head coach -- at which time Dennehy became Barbin's long-time assistant. Now, 500-plus wins later, Barbin's closing out his Exeter career just where he started, as an assistant. Round and round. Seems to be an Exeter tradition.

Mitropoulos came to Exeter as a PG the fall of 2009, having played four years for John Messuri at Winchester (Mass.) High School. After Exeter, Mitropoulos played four years at Tufts. He graduated in 2014, and while mulling over possibly going to grad school, received a call from Barbin telling him that a position was open at Exeter. That was eight years ago. Now, Mitropoulos, who is also head coach of the Exeter baseball team, is bench boss of the hockey team.

He was asked if he was nervous.

"It's more a feeling of being nervous and excited at the same time," Mitropoulos said. "It hasn't fully sunk in yet. Probably won't until game time. Dana will still be on the bench. We'll be talking the whole game, like always."

"We're just changing titles," Mitropoulos said. "He set a high standard and I want to keep that going. It's a great opportunity for me, to be able to do what coach Barbin has been doing for the last 30 plus years. I want to be able to do for students what he did for me."

"Both Dana and Bill have been huge mentors," he said.

Mitropoulos says "the excitment and energy around the team has been outstanding."

Co-captains are forward Kurt Gurkan, a Yale commit, and senior D Manan Mendiratta, an Irvine, Calif. native who played youth hockey with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks and was a new 11th grader last season. Michael Salvatore, a current 11th grader from Newburyport, Mass. and the Boston Jr. Bruins organization, will be in net.

On the bench, Mitropoulos will benefit from the coaching staff's familiarity with each other. In addition to Barbin, Brandon Hew, a defenseman at Hotchkiss who went on to become a captain at Amherst, will work with the D, while Jake "Shakey" Evans, a UNH backstop in the '70s, will be working with the goalies.

If you're going -- or even if you're not -- puck drop will be at 5:00 pm.

Welcome to 2021-22!

The 2021-22 Girls’ Prep Pages are now officially open.

We couldn’t be happier. In March 2020, several days after the prep championships were completed, the world went dark, quickly, as the mushrooming Covid-19 pandemic reached its tentacles into every corner of our lives – and stayed there, an unwelcome guest if there ever was one.

Thankfully, though not soon enough to salvage last season, vaccines arrived. Between that and masking, we’re in a far better place.

So let’s look at what you might want to know regarding the upcoming season.

All previous seasons’ news, rosters, schedules, and stats have been archived, and new material will start going into this season’s pages shortly.

We will be sending out welcome letters to prep coaches giving them the info to get started. We hope that coaches are more eager about posting their information this season. It can only help raise the profile of your teams and players. For technical assistance please email support@ushr.com

As for the big picture, we’ve done a lot of work on the back end, mostly behind-the-scenes stuff that you probably won’t notice beyond the fact that the site will be running more smoothly than ever.

We also wish to thank our readers for subscribing. Up until a few seasons ago, the USHR Girls' Prep site had been free, and, as a result, we lost money each season. That was a problem. Now, we have another: We need writers, and writers need to be paid, especially those who know their way around the girls’ game. If you are a writer, have a car and a solid understanding of the girls' prep hockey world, and can write with speed and efficiency, please send your resume -- or a letter -- and a writing sample to cwarner@ushr.com. We are also looking for a photographer, or schools willing to supply us with photos.

If coaches have news to share about their program or players, please feel free to let us know at the above email.

We firmly believe there are enough fans of girls’ hockey for us to continue putting additional resources into the ongoing construction of a first-class website devoted solely to the girls prep game.

We will also be posting jamboree and holiday tournament schedules next week. Note: send 'em along, please! The email address is the same as above.

Welcome to the new season. We're glad to be here. We’re glad you’re here. And we thank you for your support.
