Andover's Archer Holds Off St. Paul’s
Andover, Mass. – Junior Mojmir Petras’s goal with 5:01 remaining in the third period proved to be the game-winner as an opportunistic Andover team opened 2020 with a 3-1 win over visiting St. Paul’s. Senior goalie Charlie Archer, from Belleville, Ont., was the difference-maker for Andover, as shots on goal favored St. Paul’s, 41-20 (by St. Paul’s count).
After a scoreless first period in which St. Paul’s had the majority of offensive zone time, Andover came out strong to start the second, scoring less than two minutes in when Nick Royster, a sophomore out of Charlotte, North Carolina, made a quick heads-up pass out of the corner to an open Chris Hocevar in the slot. Hocevar, a junior from Canton, Conn., wasted no time with the puck, firing a one-timer over the outstretched glove of St. Paul’s senior goalie Charlie Murphy, giving Andover a 1-0 lead.
Less than six minutes later, St. Paul’s tied the game at 1-1 on a nice individual effort by ‘03 sophomore center Cooper Flinton. After gathering in a pass in the neutral zone from linemate Owen Stadheim, Flinton accelerated past an Andover defender at the blue line on his backhand side and then cruised in alone on Archer, beating him cleanly on a high stick-side snapshot from 15 feet out. It would be the lone goal of the game for SPS.
Despite several more quality chances for St. Paul’s after the Flinton goal, the game remained tied, 1-1, at the end of the second period.
Andover appeared to have more energy than St. Paul’s through most of the final period of play, and it paid off when PG forward Colin Marks picked up a loose puck on the side of the net following a Murphy save, looped behind the cage with the puck on his forehand side, and found a seam in which to feed Slovakian forward Petras in the slot. Petras fired a shot past Murphy, giving Andover a 2-1 lead.
St. Paul’s called a timeout in order to regroup after the Petras goal, but Andover was able to capitalize again with 1:41 remaining. PG Dapa Conneely, after maneuvering behind two St. Paul’s defenders, scored on a quick-release shot over the glove of Murphy. Sophomore standout Will Hughes, an ‘04, assisted on the goal.
St. Paul’s pulled their goalie, Murphy, but Archer once again shut the door on St. Paul’s to give Andover a 3-1 victory.
“I think we kind of outlasted them a little bit,” said Andover head coach Paul Tortorella. “In the third period maybe we were a little fresher. But St. Paul’s played a great game. It was a great battle. We were just lucky to get a couple more in the third period.”
Tortorella said Archer was outstanding early on. “I think he kept us in the game, as usual.”
“I also think in the third we limited their offensive chances quite well. We actually got stronger as the game went on, which I was pleased with.”
St. Paul’s head coach Dan Murphy said, “The difference in the game was clearly Charlie Archer. I thought he played really well. I thought Andover competed hard but I think Archer made a couple of saves, especially at the end of the second when we had a flurry on him, but couldn’t get one by him. He did a great job but at the same time I really liked the way our team played too.”
“I love the fact that we’re starting to play a more mature, composed hockey game,” Murphy added. “And I liked the way we were strong on pucks around the net.”
“We were in their zone for most of that first period. We had a lot of zone time in the first and second periods, but not as much in the third as we got a little tired.”

BB&N Blanks Loomis, 2-0, on Griffin Goals
Windsor, Conn. -- BB&N, behind two goals from senior Molly Griffin, two assists from senior Maya Mangiafico, and a combined shutout by senior goaltenders Dani Bernstein and Vic Kennedy, blanked Loomis, 2-0, here today.
"Everything was senior-driven today," BB&N head coach Ed Bourget said.
BB&N started the game slowly, looking like they had a case of bus legs, and Loomis came at them hard in the first period and went on to own it, but with no goals to show for their work
One could sense, when the teams came out for the second, that things might change, and they did. From the get-go, BB&N appeared to have a little more jump, and, as the period progressed, they began getting more opportunities, but nothing Loomis's goaltender couldn't handle.
Loomis was getting its chances too, but the BB&N goalies -- senior Dani Bernstein for the first half, and senior Vic Kennedy for the second half -- weren't letting anything get past them.
This likely buoyed BB&N, because early in the third -- in the first five minutes -- they took over the game, striking for two goals -- both even-strength -- from Griffin. Mangiafico assisted on both. Senior Jenna Hallice had an assist on the second. After the two goals, Loomis seemed a bit deflated. They were unable to mount a serious comeback. Perhaps the 3-2 OT win that knocked Tabor from the ranks of the undefeated last weekend was a psychic drain.
Notes & Quotes:
Bourget said that he felt his team did well making in-game adjustments.
"I thought in the first period we came out flat," he said. "And between periods we talked about how we had to come out faster, and play a better team game. I think we did that."
"Between the second and third periods we challenged them to take a big step, to go to the net, to get pucks on net."
Which they did, of course.
"Loomis is good and they are fast," Bourget added. "So we needed a total team effort. We needed players to respond to the challenges we put out to them, and they did."
Leyden said, "My team worked hard, but you have to finish your chances to win."
Shots on goal were pretty even. Penalties were even -- two for each team. Three of the penalties came in the third period, two of which were called on BB&N.
There were a number of Loomis players this reporter liked today, particularly freshman Molly Jordan; sophomore Callie Dixon; juniors Caroline Appleyard and Paige Larose; and the seniors, Jenna Donohue and Anna Hurd.
BB&N is now 12-2-0. They are home Friday to face Andover at 5:30 pm. Loomis drops to 10-5-1, and will travel to Greenwich for a game Friday night at 6:00 pm.
