Simeone, Portsmouth Abbey End 31-game Winless Streak
Yarmouth, Maine -- The longest winless streak in prep hockey came to an end today as Portsmouth Abbey edged North Yarmouth Academy, 4-3 in OT, breaking a 31-game winless streak (0-30-1) that stretched back to Jan. 20, 2018. Senior F Dean Simeone capped off his hat trick with the OT game-winner, while repeat junior G Nate Hopkins (35/38), a transfer from Bishop Hendricken, earned the win.
After NYA's Jared Buckner scored a shorthanded goal 31 seconds into the second period to put the hosts up 2-0, the Abbey picked it up a notch. Senior F Will Crowley -- one of the team's four captains -- beat NYA goalie Nathan Loisel (30/34) 5-hole to make it a one-goal game. Simeone -- also a senior team captain -- followed it up with a one-timer from the slot, tying the game at 2-2. Assists went to juniors Alex Leef and Markus Keller.
Simeone's second goal of the game came less than two minutes later, at 11:54, and it was an unassisted goal as Simeone chipped the puck past a NYA defenseman, and moved in on a breakaway, beating Loisel glove side to give the Abbey a 3-2 lead they'd take into the second intermission.
NYA tied it up at 3-3 with the only goal of the third period as Jonathan Heise, a PG from St. Laurent, Quebec, scored on the PP, deflecting home Mason Park's half pass/half shot from the point at 7:33.
Overtime was brief, Simeone again cashing in on a breakaway, beating Loisel stick side, about a foot off the ice, 24 seconds in.
And that was it. The winless streak is over.
"NYA is one of the better teams we play," said PA fourth-year head coach Allie Skelley, "and our guys just battled."
"This is a good group of guys. Team-first guys. We have four great senior captains (Simeone, Crowley, forward Ryan Tarmey, and defenseman Josh Plumb), and they've had their noses rubbed in it."
"(Simeone) is one of those guys, added Skelley. "He's quiet, and he leads by example. He's been here four years. He has skill, but he's been snakebit. He certainly found the back of the net today."

Berkshire junior goaltender Jed Balliotti (18/19) earned the win; Gunnery senior Carmine Andranovich (15/20) took the loss. Berkshire is 3-0 on the young season; Gunnery falls to 3-1.
@ Avon 7, Taft 4 -- Sophomore F Liam Verdoni had a hat trick, and junior Brendan Williams (1g,2a) had 3 points to lead host Avon, now 3-0, past Taft, whose only win in their first four games was a 3-2 decision over Salisbury.
@ Middlesex 5, Brooks 4 (OT) -- This one was tied up several times, but it was Middlesex soph Henry Cohen who came through in OT. Assist on the GWG, which came at 3:51, goes to senior Kevin Campbell. Middlesex outshot Brooks, 39-24. Both teams are now 2-1-0.
Brunswick 6 @ Kent 0 -- Three days after topping KUA at the Exeter Tournament, Kent came up with a goose egg at home against Brunswick, thus taking their first loss of the season. The visitors came out with purpose, putting themselves up, 4-0, midway through the first period. Junior F Michael Salandra (2g,2a) led Brunswick scorers with 4 points. Junior G Alexander Rohlf (25/25) earned the shutout win. Brunswick is 2-2-1.
Westminster 6 @ Choate 3 -- Choate held a 3-2 lead after one period, but the visitors from Westminster scored four unanswered goals in the second, two from senior Wyatt Pastor (who also had 3 assists). Westminster outshot the Wild Boars, 40-18.
Pingree 5 @ Berwick 4 (OT) -- Ian Driscoll's second goal of the game, at 3:28 of OT, gave Pingree their first win of the season. Juniors Hazen Pike (2g,2a) and Brendan Driscoll (3a) also came through for Pingree, now 1-4-0.
@ Salisbury 2, Hotchkiss 0 -- Goals from Matt DeBoer and Tommy Rooney provided all the offense the Crimson Knights needed. Max Donoso, Salisbury's new junior goaltender, picked up a 20-save shutout. Hotchkiss senior goaltender Henry Wilder, now in his fourth season with the Bearcats, was the tough luck loser, stopping 35 of the 37 shots he faced. Salisbury is now 3-1; Hotchkiss falls to 2-2.
Cushing 4 @ Williston Northampton 3 -- After Max Dorrington's second goal of the first period, Cushing held a 3-0 lead, but Williston rebounded in the second period with powerplay goals 21 seconds apart to cut the Penguins' lead to one. Each team scored a goal in the third. Cushing freshman goalie Jackson Irving (33/36) picked up the win. Williston outshot Cushing, 36-28. Cushing improves to 3-1-1 while Williston falls to 0-3-0.
@ Rivers 4, St. George's 0 -- Junior F Will Conway had a hat trick, and sophomore G Conor Sullivan (20/20) picked up the shutout. There were 20 minors in this game, 12 against Rivers and 8 against the Dragons. All 4 goals were either 4x4 or 5x4. The win was the first in the year for Rivers (1-2). St. George's drops to 1-3-0.
Dexter 5 @ Exeter 1 -- Doug Grimes (1g,1a), Aidan Connolly (1g,1a), and Michael Adamson (2a) led the Dexter scorers while freshman goaltender Dylan Silverstein (16/17) earned the win in net. Dexter remains undefeated at 4-0; Exeter drops to 5-2-1.
@ Trinity-Pawling 5, Albany Academy 3 -- T-P got goals from 5 different scorers, and junior G Cam Carroll (15/18) got the win in net. Albany junior G Andrew Palena (54/59) was the hard-luck loser.
Governor's 3, Belmont Hill 1 -- A third-period SHG from junior Aaron Mulligan proved to be the difference here today, giving the Governors a 2-1 lead with 5:02 left. Owen Fowler would make it 3-1 with an ENG. Goalie Tristan Mecenas, a 6'4" new junior at the school, kicked out 35 of 36 shots for the win. Bel Hill junior G Charlie Lambert (23/25) took the tough loss. Governors improves to 3-2-0; Belmont Hill drops to 0-2-0.
@ Kimball Union 5, Proctor 0 -- KUA senior G Veeti Kohvakka notched the 24-save shutout, and seniors Sullivan Mack (2g,2a), Tomas Mazura (2g,1a), and Teddy Griffin (2a) each had multiple points for the Wildcats. KUA improves to 4-1-0 in NEPSIHA play; Proctor falls to 2-2-0.
St. Mark's 6, Worcester Academy 3 -- Junior Brendan Gibbons (2g,1a), senior Danny Ciccarello (1g,2a), and junior D Ian Moore (3a) led the St. Mark's scorers with 3 points apiece. Senior G Will Bundy (18/21) picked up the win for the Lions. Worcester junior Jack Byrne (59/64) took a hard-luck loss. St. Mark's is 3-0; Worcester drops to 0-2.
@ NMH 1, Deerfield 1 -- This one was a battle of goalies, with Deerfield freshman G Justin Katz (28/29) and NMH senior G Connor Hasley (29/30) each coming up big. Joe Solomine (NMH) and Drew Garzone (Deerfield) provided the goals.
Loomis 2 @ Pomfret 1-- Another battle of goalies. New Loomis soph G Ethan Roberts (31/32) earned the win, while Pomfret PG Andrew Shearson (30/32) took the loss. Loomis goals were scored by senior D Kennedy O'Connor and senior F Cody Hoban. Pomfret PG forward Jake Hughes scored the Griffins' lone goal. Loomis (4-0-0) is undefeated in NEPSIHA play. Pomfret drops to 3-1-0.
St. Sebastian's 9 @ BB&N 0 -- Timmy Delay (1g,3a), Joe Harney (2g,1a) and Michael Callow (3a) led the Arrows' scorers.
@ Lawrenceville 3, Hill 1 -- Senior F Trey Croddick's second period goal turned out to be the game-winner. Croddick also assisted on the first L'ville goal. Tait Mott had 2 goals, the second one an ENG.
The goalies were the story, though. Both L'ville senior TJ Semptimphelter (28/29) and Hill senior Sean Parker (24/26) were on their game.
@ New Hampton 5, Tilton 5 -- Both goalies, senior Justin Lee (Tilton) and PG Robbie Farrell (New Hampton) finished with 35 saves on 40 shots. Top scorers were PGs Maxwell Cocchi (1g,3a) and Jon Tavella (3a) for Tilton, and senior Jack Ring (3a) for New Hampton. Tilton stays undefeated at 3-0-1. New Hampton falls to 1-3-1, but has played a tough early-season schedule.
St. Paul's 5 @ Vermont Academy 0 -- SPS got goals from 5 different player, and senior G Charlie Murphy (14 saves) and freshman Rocco Bryant (1 save) combined for the shutout. Vermont junior Mason Kucenski (57/62) did a good job, but was nonetheless tagged for the loss .
@ Holderness 5, Brewster 0 -- New sophomore Jeremi Tremblay (3g,1a) figured in 4 of the 5 Holderness goals, and new junior Aiden Belt posted a 27-save shutout. The Bulls are 4-0-0; Brewster drops to 2-5-0.
@ Noble & Greenough 4, Tabor 1 -- Senior G Marc Smith (27/28) had a strong game in the Nobles' net, and seniors Jack Cronin (2g) and Casey Severo (1g,1a), and junior David Jacobs (2a) led the scorers. Senior G Brandon Sherman (28/32) took the loss for the Seawolves.
Lawrence Academy 6 @ Milton 0 -- Senior G Brandon Milberg posted a 17-save shutout. Junior D Damien Carfanga had 2 goals. Junior F David Sacco and junior D Kyle Furey each had 3 assists.
@ Winchendon 8, Hoosac 3 -- Senior F Danny Cavanagh notched a hat trick and added an assist to lead the Wapitis. In addition, junior forwards Nolan McDonough (1g,2a) and Jake Black (2g), as well as junior d-men Will Cohen (5a) and Matt Gallagher (3a) had big days. Hoosac was led by PG Noah Patry-Dontigny (2g,1a), who figured in Hoosac's goals, all of which came in the third period against Winchendon senior G Max Caouette (24/27) .

Nobles Reclaims Harrington Crown
In a game highlighted by special teams play, Nobles skated past Williston, 3-1, on Sunday to reclaim the Harrington Tournament Championship. A key to their win was Nobles' ability to capitalize on the ample power plays Williston handed them, scoring two of their three goals when up a man. Williston was also given chances to display its power play unit, from which they generated most of their opportunities. Jules Constantinople gave the Wildcats hope, scoring the lone goal for the Wildcats to bring the game to 2-1 early in the third. That hope quickly faded two minutes later on a power play snipe by Kaley MacDonald that put Nobles up, 3-1. At that's where things stood at the final buzzer.
The 2019 Harrington Tournament proved to be more competitive than last year's, which was won by St. Paul's in a shootout. Seven of last year’s teams returned this year, with BB&N returning after a one-year hiatus. And what a difference a year makes. While Nobles performed at a level a notch above the others, most of the games were highly competitive and fun to watch.
Following are some notes on each team.
Milton Academy
Lost all four games at the Harrington for the second straight year. This is a team that in recent years was praised for its defense, but this time around came up short in that department, getting outscored over the four games by a 16-2 margin. Sophomore Caroline Baldwin stood out as a solid player on defense, but cannot do it alone. There was also no clear combination of players that could provide the goal scoring chances they desperately needed. Milton knocked off New Hampton just two weeks ago, so maybe the tide can turn for them. However, they will need to find consistent goaltending and a defensive system that will keep them in games. That said, acknowledgments should be given to this team for taking St. Mark’s to overtime in the seventh-place game on Sunday.
Milton (0-4): Preliminary Round (0-3): Lost to SPS, lost to BB&N, lost to Williston. Playoff Round (0-1): Lost to St. Mark's, 1-2 (OT), to finish 8th.
St. Mark’s
The Lions were, arguably, the only team to give Nobles even an ounce of trouble over the weekend, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for two periods and even dominating much of the second period in Saturday's 4-1 loss. From what we saw this weekend, it seems as though this team plays to the level of its opponent. The Lions had some creative players, particularly juniors Lauren Tolve and Madison Michals. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them give some top teams trouble this year, but consistency will be needed if they look to put together a solid season.
St. Mark's (1-4): Preliminary Round (0-3): Lost to Westy, lost to LA, lost to Nobles. Playoff Round (1-0): Beat Milton, 2-1, in OT to finish in 7th place.
Lawrence Academy
Lawrence is a smaller team than others here, but showed moments of good hockey during the weekend. Although they were able to hold a lead over St. Paul’s through two periods, this team does not appear to be a threat to many top teams this season. Morgan Vigeant and Alyssa Berardino were key to the Spartans' defense throughout the weekend. Their top lines were not as impressive as other teams' were, and they will struggle to score goals. LA's ability to be energetic on the ice and grind is the primary reason they were able to sneak by St. Mark’s and avoid the dreaded 7th place game on Sunday.
Lawrence (1-3): Preliminary Round (1-2): Lost to Nobles, beat St. Mark's, lost to Westminster. Playoff Round (0-1): Lost to St. Paul's, 2-6, to finish 6th.
Williston Northampton
This is not the most impressive Williston team we have seen, but that does not mean they won’t be able to make a run to the postseason. After all, it was just two years ago that they made it all the way to the championship game -- as the eighth seed. Going forward, it will be important for Williston to stay out of the penalty box. Two of the three goals Nobles scored against them in the finals were PP tallies. If they can solve that issue, they should be able to compete with any team in New England. Also, Williston is lethal on the power play. Two of its three goals against St. Paul’s came with the man advantage. Sophomore Jules Constantinople and junior Sydney Wegner had some special moments and were able to get their squad on the board in the championship game. Note that Christina Vote, a star senior forward on the roster, did not play. Getting her back will be an important piece of the puzzle as the season moves on.
Williston (3-0): Preliminary Round (3-0): Beat BB&N, beat SPS, beat Milton. Playoff Round (0-1): Lost to Nobles, 1-3 to finish 2nd.
St. Paul’s School
St. Paul’s had a tough weekend, especially when considering the talent they have. Before their season began, senior goalie and 2019 All-NEPSAC selection Madison Beck had surgery on her ACL and will be out for the season. And USHR’s top freshman player last season, Kristina Allard, was out sick all weekend. On Sunday, SPS was, including Allard, down three players due to the stomach bug, which made taking down Lawrence a bit more tough. The Pelicans seemed slow and careless throughout the weekend, but were able to come up with a four-goal third period to top LA and secure fifth place on Sunday. It was a theme all weekend: the Pelicans only showed their talent when they fell behind. In order to find success this winter, they must find a way to start games with intensity rather than being forced to chase the game.
St. Paul's (2-2): Preliminary Round (1-2): Beat Milton, lost to Williston, lost to BB&N. Playoff Round (1-0): Beat LA, 6-2, to finish in 5th place.
Noble & Greenough
Another year, another very strong team. Again, they are one of the most talented, deep, and well-coached teams in New England. Maeve Connolly, Emmy O’Leary, Katie Pyne, Kate Ham, and Ellie Bayard provide a very strong backbone for this team, and each is incredibly talented in her own right. Even when this group is not totally on its game, Nobles is too deep for it to be a problem. Every one of the Bulldogs' lines has the ability to both create scoring chances and keep the puck out of their end. Senior goalie Taylor Hyland will be able to keep them in the close games. She was consistent all weekend, with a strong Nobles defense -- they have only allowed five goals over the season's first nine games -- in front of her.
Nobles (4-0) -- Preliminary Round (3-0): Beat LA, beat Westy, beat St. Mark's. Playoff Round (1-0): Beat Williston, 3-1, to finish as 2019 Champions.
Westminster
It was great to see Westminster with a good squad again. They successfully rotated their goalies throughout the weekend, and are a good-sized team, towering over most of their opponents. Senior Megan Rittenhouse and Jenny Guider are the go-to pair for the Martlets when looking for a goal. The other lines struggled to create scoring opportunities. Westy's entire team was prepared on the defensive side of the puck. They will need to find a way to create secondary scoring if they wish to make it into March this year. They had some chances against BB&N in the third-place game, but were unable to get enough consistent scoring.
On a side note, Kelcie Finn, one of the members of Westminster's 2014 New England Championship team, is now an assistant coach with the Martlets.
Westminster (2-2): Preliminary Round (2-1): Beat St. Mark's, lost to Nobles, beat LA. Playoff Round (0-1): Lost to BB&N, 1-0, to finish 4th.
Buckingham Browne & Nichols
This team is good -- well-coached, disciplined, and, other than against Williston, seemed like the better team in all of its matchups. Their third-place finish was all the more impressive for playing without their best player, Mia Biotti, who is getting ready to play in the U-18 World Championships over New Year's. This team has no quit in them and created offense from many different parts of their game. Gali Levy, Molly Griffin, Maya Mangiafico, and Julia Maimonis were all particularly impressive. They should -- individually and collectively -- be tough for opposing teams to shut down. BB&N is fun to watch and, if they keep up with this creative yet consistent style of hockey that Coach Ed Bourget has developed, will have success the rest of the way. Their rematch at St. Paul’s on January 15th will be one to circle on your calendar.
BB&N (3-1): Preliminary Round (2-1): Lost to Williston, beat Milton, beat SPS. Playoff Round (1-0): Beat Westy, 1-0, to finish 3rd.
