Gunnery 3 @ Hotchkiss 1 -- Senior G Carmine Andranovich stopped 25 of 26 shots to lead Gunnery to the win. The skaters in front of him poured 41 shots on Hotchkiss senior G Henry Wilder, who stopped 39 of them in a tough loss. Gunnery got second period goals from seniors Hunter Rossi and Dane Dowiak, and d-man Zander Lizotte added an ENG with 27 seconds left. Gunnery took 9 penalites; Hotchkiss took 8.

@ Taft 3, Salisbury 2 -- Taft senior G James Donaldson kicked out 39 of 41 shots, and fellow senior Zack Tonelli scored a pair of goals within a span of 1:27 in the second period to lead the Rhinos to a big win in their home opener.
Salisbury senior Matt DeBoer's first period goal gave the visitors a 1-0 lead they were able to hold until midway through the second when Henry Molson tied it up for Taft. Tonelli, a Brown recruit, quickly followed with a pair of goals. Salisbury's Samuel Deckhut, a new junior from San Diego, added a goal late in the second. There was no scoring in the third. Salisbury senior G Nick Haas (18/21) took the loss. For Taft, Tristan Fasig had 2 assists and Molson also added an assist.

@ Kent 5, Hoosac 1 -- After a Hoosac PPG 28 seconds into the second, Kent got 2 goals apiece from senior forwards Jason Kleinhans and Jonas Passante. Fellow senior AJ von Brauchitsch had 2 assists. Kent outshot Hoosac, 37-18. Kent's Joey Purtell, a new junior from Beverly, Mass., kicked out 17 of 18 for the win.

Holderness 5 @ Hebron 2 -- Holderness got goals from 5 different scorers and Aiden Belt, a new junior goaltender from Colorado, stopped 24 of 26 to lead the Bulls to the season-opening road win.

@ Pomfret 4, Nobles 2 -- Senior Sami Hakkararainen had two goals and added an assist, but it was a Matt Lakus goal with 38 seconds left in the second period that turned out to be the game-winner. PG goalie Andrew Shearson (32/34) got the win; Nobles senior G Marc Smith (28/32) took the loss. Robert Lapsley and Casey Severo scored for Nobles.

@ Brewster 3, Vermont Academy 2 -- Sam Livecchi, a new junior from Rochester, NY, kicked out 26 of 28 shots for the win. Brewster got goals from 3 different scorers. Vermont Academy junior G Mason Kucenski (36/39) took the loss.

@ New Hampton 9, Winchendon 3 -- New Hampton first-year head coach Connor Gorman picked up his first prep win as his charges broke up a 2-2 tie with 6 straight second period goals. Seniors Marcus Joughlin (2g,4a), Isaac McLeod (hat trick, 2a), and Cory Morris (1g,4a) led all scorers.

Dexter 10 @ Cushing 2 -- Ben Raymond (1g,3a), Culin Wilson (2g,1a), John McElaney (1g,2a), Aidan Connolly (2g), Vinnie Gould (1g,1a), and Michael Adamson (2a) led the Dexter attack. Freshman G Dylan Silverstein kicked out 19 of 21 shots for the win. Dexter outshot Cushing, 33-21.

Proctor 4 @ Governor's 1 -- Senior G Cole Chingris stopped 29 of 31 shots to lead the Hornets to a season-opening win at Governor's. Senior F Nils Holland (1g,2a) led the scorers. Junior Alex Laracy and sophomore Jack Robinson each had a goal and an assist.

Berkshire 5 @ Albany Academy 3 -- Berkshire led 2-0 after 1, trailed 3-2 after 2, but owned the third period, coming back with 3 unanswered goals to take the opening day win. PG Gunnar Granito (2g,1a), and seniors Briggs Gammill (1g,2a) and Aidan Thompson (1g, 2a) each had 3 points for the Bears.

@ Tilton 5, Kents Hill 4 -- An OT goal from PG Maxwell Cocchi led the Rams in their opener. Cocchi also had a SHG in the first and senior F Jack Seymout (1g,2a) had a 3-point day. PG Ryan Nolte scored all 3 Kents Hill goals. Tilton had a 46-19 edge in shots.

Milton 4, North Yarmouth Academy 1 -- NYA, on a Jonathan Heise SHG, held a 1-0 lead after 1, but Milton, in their home opener, took over after that. William Van der Veen (1g,1a), Tyler Crist (1g,1a), David Chen (2a), and Shane O'Sullivan (2a) led the Mustangs attack. In goal, sophomore Chris DeMers (19/20) got the win; NYA senior Stefan Kulhanek (36/39) took the loss.

Exeter 2, Stanstead College 1 -- In a neutral site game played at the Cardigan Mountain School, Exeter junior F Michael Young broke the 1-1 tie with a third period PPG that held up as the game-winner. Earlier, Devon DeVries had given Stanstead a 1-0 lead on a SHG before Exeter tied it up on a second-period goal from sophomore F Charlie McGurrin. Exeter senior G Ryan Welch, in his fourth year in the Big Red net, picked up the win, stopping 27 of 28 shots. Stanstead junior William Dyke (24/26) took the loss.

Nobles Reclaims Harrington Crown

In a game highlighted by special teams play, Nobles skated past Williston, 3-1, on Sunday to reclaim the Harrington Tournament Championship. A key to their win was Nobles' ability to capitalize on the ample power plays Williston handed them, scoring two of their three goals when up a man. Williston was also given chances to display its power play unit, from which they generated most of their opportunities. Jules Constantinople gave the Wildcats hope, scoring the lone goal for the Wildcats to bring the game to 2-1 early in the third. That hope quickly faded two minutes later on a power play snipe by Kaley MacDonald that put Nobles up, 3-1. At that's where things stood at the final buzzer.

The 2019 Harrington Tournament proved to be more competitive than last year's, which was won by St. Paul's in a shootout. Seven of last year’s teams returned this year, with BB&N returning after a one-year hiatus. And what a difference a year makes. While Nobles performed at a level a notch above the others, most of the games were highly competitive and fun to watch.

Following are some notes on each team.

Milton Academy

Lost all four games at the Harrington for the second straight year. This is a team that in recent years was praised for its defense, but this time around came up short in that department, getting outscored over the four games by a 16-2 margin. Sophomore Caroline Baldwin stood out as a solid player on defense, but cannot do it alone. There was also no clear combination of players that could provide the goal scoring chances they desperately needed. Milton knocked off New Hampton just two weeks ago, so maybe the tide can turn for them. However, they will need to find consistent goaltending and a defensive system that will keep them in games. That said, acknowledgments should be given to this team for taking St. Mark’s to overtime in the seventh-place game on Sunday.

Milton (0-4): Preliminary Round (0-3): Lost to SPS, lost to BB&N, lost to Williston. Playoff Round (0-1): Lost to St. Mark's, 1-2 (OT), to finish 8th.

St. Mark’s

The Lions were, arguably, the only team to give Nobles even an ounce of trouble over the weekend, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for two periods and even dominating much of the second period in Saturday's 4-1 loss. From what we saw this weekend, it seems as though this team plays to the level of its opponent. The Lions had some creative players, particularly juniors Lauren Tolve and Madison Michals. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them give some top teams trouble this year, but consistency will be needed if they look to put together a solid season.

St. Mark's (1-4): Preliminary Round (0-3): Lost to Westy, lost to LA, lost to Nobles. Playoff Round (1-0):  Beat Milton, 2-1, in OT to finish in 7th place.

Lawrence Academy

Lawrence is a smaller team than others here, but showed moments of good hockey during the weekend. Although they were able to hold a lead over St. Paul’s through two periods, this team does not appear to be a threat to many top teams this season. Morgan Vigeant and Alyssa Berardino were key to the Spartans' defense throughout the weekend. Their top lines were not as impressive as other teams' were, and they will struggle to score goals. LA's ability to be energetic on the ice and grind is the primary reason they were able to sneak by St. Mark’s and avoid the dreaded 7th place game on Sunday.

Lawrence (1-3): Preliminary Round (1-2): Lost to Nobles, beat St. Mark's, lost to Westminster. Playoff Round (0-1): Lost to St. Paul's, 2-6, to finish 6th.

Williston Northampton

This is not the most impressive Williston team we have seen, but that does not mean they won’t be able to make a run to the postseason. After all, it was just two years ago that they made it all the way to the championship game -- as the eighth seed. Going forward, it will be important for Williston to stay out of the penalty box. Two of the three goals Nobles scored against them in the finals were PP tallies. If they can solve that issue, they should be able to compete with any team in New England. Also, Williston is lethal on the power play. Two of its three goals against St. Paul’s came with the man advantage. Sophomore Jules Constantinople and junior Sydney Wegner had some special moments and were able to get their squad on the board in the championship game. Note that Christina Vote, a star senior forward on the roster, did not play. Getting her back will be an important piece of the puzzle as the season moves on.

Williston (3-0): Preliminary Round (3-0): Beat BB&N, beat SPS, beat Milton. Playoff Round (0-1): Lost to Nobles, 1-3 to finish 2nd.

St. Paul’s School

St. Paul’s had a tough weekend, especially when considering the talent they have. Before their season began, senior goalie and 2019 All-NEPSAC selection Madison Beck had surgery on her ACL and will be out for the season. And USHR’s top freshman player last season, Kristina Allard, was out sick all weekend. On Sunday, SPS was, including Allard, down three players due to the stomach bug, which made taking down Lawrence a bit more tough. The Pelicans seemed slow and careless throughout the weekend, but were able to come up with a four-goal third period to top LA and secure fifth place on Sunday. It was a theme all weekend: the Pelicans only showed their talent when they fell behind. In order to find success this winter, they must find a way to start games with intensity rather than being forced to chase the game.

St. Paul's (2-2): Preliminary Round (1-2): Beat Milton, lost to Williston, lost to BB&N. Playoff Round (1-0): Beat LA, 6-2, to finish in 5th place.

Noble & Greenough

Another year, another very strong team. Again, they are one of the most talented, deep, and well-coached teams in New England. Maeve Connolly, Emmy O’Leary, Katie Pyne, Kate Ham, and Ellie Bayard provide a very strong backbone for this team, and each is incredibly talented in her own right. Even when this group is not totally on its game, Nobles is too deep for it to be a problem. Every one of the Bulldogs' lines has the ability to both create scoring chances and keep the puck out of their end. Senior goalie Taylor Hyland will be able to keep them in the close games. She was consistent all weekend, with a strong Nobles defense -- they have only allowed five goals over the season's first nine games -- in front of her.

Nobles (4-0) -- Preliminary Round (3-0): Beat LA, beat Westy, beat St. Mark's. Playoff Round (1-0): Beat Williston, 3-1, to finish as 2019 Champions.

Westminster

It was great to see Westminster with a good squad again. They successfully rotated their goalies throughout the weekend, and are a good-sized team, towering over most of their opponents. Senior Megan Rittenhouse and Jenny Guider are the go-to pair for the Martlets when looking for a goal. The other lines struggled to create scoring opportunities. Westy's entire team was prepared on the defensive side of the puck. They will need to find a way to create secondary scoring if they wish to make it into March this year. They had some chances against BB&N in the third-place game, but were unable to get enough consistent scoring.

On a side note, Kelcie Finn, one of the members of Westminster's 2014 New England Championship team, is now an assistant coach with the Martlets.

Westminster (2-2): Preliminary Round (2-1): Beat St. Mark's, lost to Nobles, beat LA. Playoff Round (0-1):  Lost to BB&N, 1-0, to finish 4th.

Buckingham Browne & Nichols

This team is good -- well-coached, disciplined, and, other than against Williston, seemed like the better team in all of its matchups. Their third-place finish was all the more impressive for playing without their best player, Mia Biotti, who is getting ready to play in the U-18 World Championships over New Year's. This team has no quit in them and created offense from many different parts of their game. Gali Levy, Molly Griffin, Maya Mangiafico, and Julia Maimonis were all particularly impressive. They should -- individually and collectively -- be tough for opposing teams to shut down. BB&N is fun to watch and, if they keep up with this creative yet consistent style of hockey that Coach Ed Bourget has developed, will have success the rest of the way. Their rematch at St. Paul’s on January 15th will be one to circle on your calendar.

BB&N (3-1): Preliminary Round (2-1): Lost to Williston, beat Milton, beat SPS. Playoff Round (1-0): Beat Westy, 1-0, to finish 3rd.
