USHR Weekly Div. II Poll

1. Brooks (4-0-0) Brooks is rolling. It will be interesting to see how they do with new #7 Berwick today.

2. Worcester Academy (4-0-0) The Hilltoppers look ready to make another run at a title. We will see them at the Watkins Tournament.

3. Vermont Academy (1-1-0) A total shock seeing what happened to the defending Div. II champions, losing 9-2 to St. Paul’s.

4. Rivers (2-1-0). The Red Wings got thumped, 6-1, by Div. I powerhouse Tabor. They are young, though, so it might take some time.

5. St. George's (2-0-2) The Dragons haven’t lost yet. Their record includes a recent tie with Div. I Lawrence Academy.

6. Tilton (2-2-1) Tilton is playing everyone tough, including a recent tie vs. KUA.

7. Berwick (4-1-0) It's awesome seeing the Bulldogs in this poll! Coach Kelly Souza and her staff are doing a terrific job.

8. Groton (2-2). The Zebras got beat up at Tabor, losing 5-1, but bounced right back with a 4-0-win over Pingree.

USHR Christmas Week Div. I Poll

1. Tabor (5-0-0) The Seawolves are the best team right now. Will they be #1 when it counts? We aren’t so sure. But we won’t bet against them, either.

2. Nobles (7-0-2) Nobles deserved better vs. St. Paul’s in the Harrington finals, but overall the Bulldogs are the most balanced team in girls prep hockey.

3. St. Paul’s (8-1-1) The Pelicans knocked off the 800-pound gorilla. That doesn’t happen very often. The Pelicans are very good.

4. Williston (6-1-0) The Wildcats are young and getting better. They outplayed Nobles for a good part of their Harrington matchup, but lost, 2-1.

5. Kent (7-1-0). Kent only lost one game at the Odden, but they clearly weren’t themselves. We have no doubt they will be there when it matters in March.

6. Andover (4-1-2) The Big Blue won only one game out of four at the Odden, but look like they could be a serious playoff contender if they can get some help on the backend.

7. BB&N (3-1-0) It was really disappointing for everyone -- including college recruiters -- not seeing the Knights at the Harrington.

8. Loomis (3-2-3) The Pelicans lost to Tabor, 5-0, in the opening game at the Odden and never really recovered. We have no doubt they will come back strong after the break.

9. New Hampton (4-2) We watched the Huskies get beaten, 4-1, by D-II Worcester at the Watkins. We saw them lose 6-1 to Nobles. But they definitely have talent. They host Tabor in early January.

10. Deerfield (4-4-1) The Big Green is back on our list after winning the Watkins. Deerfield has a tremendous group of defensemen and a top line that can play with anyone.

Under Consideration: Exeter

USHR Christmas Week Div. II Poll

1. Brooks (6-0-1) Brooks lost in a shootout to host Exeter in the title game of the Exeter Tournament, but dominated most of the game.

2. Worcester Academy (7-1-0) The Hilltoppers had a solid showing at the Watkins with a surprising 4-1 win over New Hampton.

3. Rivers (5-1-0). Won the Southfield tournament in convincing fashion.

4. Vermont Academy (3-1-0) We were disappointed to not see them defend their Watkins title. VA opted to play NYA and a couple of club teams instead.

5. KUA (4-3-1) Lost in the finals at the Southfield tournament to Rivers. But the Wildcats are young and improving.

6. Canterbury (5-3-0) The Saints have won four in a row.

7. Greenwich Academy (4-3) GA has won three of its last four, including impressive wins over both Gunnery and St. George's.

8. Thayer (4-4-0) The Tigers jumped into the eighth spot with an impressive 5-1 win over Berwick at the Southfield tourney.

Southfield Tournament Notes
Champion: Rivers
Runner-Up: Kimball Union

Rivers vs. KUA in the finals was a very good hockey game. Rivers won, 2-0, with an empty-netter at the end. Both Rivers' goals were scored by 7th grader Lauren Glazer.

Kate Shaughnessy, Camille Phelan and Leslie Schwartz stood out for Rivers.

KUA is a very young team but has some good overall team speed. KUA F Mikah Baptiste was very impressive and seemed to be all over the ice.

-- Thayer went 3-1 overall including beating  USHR #7-ranked  Berwick, 5-1, which was a surprise.

Thayer's goaltender, junior Cam McCrystle, impressed. So did senior forward Christina Meucci.

-- Berwick played well, beating KUA, but ended up losing three times, which was totally unexpected.

The three Foster sisters -- juniors Brittany, Sydney, and Tiffany -- all impressed.

-- Groton did not impress us. We're not sure what to make of the Zebras. They have a group of good players and look like they could be a legitimate playoff team, but they had a hard time putting it all together over the weekend.

Groton defenseman Bridget Cornell played very well all weekend.

-- Southfield had a good showing, losing a tough one to KUA early, 1-0, but bounced back with strong wins over both Groton and Berwick.

Southfield senior forward F Karly Aguirre is very dangerous with the puck on her stick.

Southfield goaltender Lily O’Neil was very impressive, and looks like a good college prospect. O’Neil spent last season playing for the Walpole Express junior team.

Exeter Championship Game Notes

Champion: Exeter
Runner-up: Brooks

In a thrilling overtime shootout, Exeter stunned Brooks, USHR's #1-ranked Div.II team, to win the championship game, 2-1.

Exeter goalie Michaela O’Brien put on a show, and was certainly our game MVP. We did not see any shot totals, but O’Brien must have had close to 40 saves.

Exeter sophomore forward Alyssa Xu, from Canada, was very impressive. She scored in regulation to tie the game and then again in the shootout. Xu was all over the ice and looks like a Div. I prospect.

New Exeter coach Sally Komarek looks like she has the Big Red headed in the right direction.

Brooks deserved better, as they were in total control of this game. Star goaltender Caroline Kukas looked bored most of the game. Shots against were few and far between.

Brooks has some serious firepower up front with Brianna O’Neil, Ashley Houlihan and Caroline O’Keefe. All had  standout games. O’Neil looks like a Div. I prospect.

Brooks is going to be a very tough team to beat in the second half of the season. We have not seen a better team in Div. II this year.

Watkins Tournament Notes

Champion: Deerfield
Runner-Up: Cushing

-- It's remarkable that the bottom of the barrel at the 2017 Watkins Tournament ended up playing for the championship 12 months later. Both coaches, Val Bono of Cushing, and Brooke Fernandez of Deerfield, have done a tremendous job.

Deerfield gets the majority of its offense from Holy Cross commit Mary Edmonds. She was outstanding throughout.

The Deerfield defense, led by BC commit Deirdre Mullowney, was also excellent. Mullowney logged big minutes in the championship game and was very physical.

Deerfield freshman defenseman Sara Ito-Bagshaw, a Californian, looks to be a solid prospect.

Deerfield junior goalie Liv Mikesell was outstanding in the championship game, and was voted MVP of the tournament. Mikesell is a bit on the small side, but very athletic.

-- Cushing junior goalie Sarah Potter was outstanding. She is big, athletic, and made tough saves look easy in the final.

The Penguins are loaded with young talent, including some D-I commits, but this level of play appears to be a bigger adjustment for them than they may have realized. The physicality of the championship game against Deerfield must have been an eye-opener.

Cushing sophomore forward Shea Verrier had a strong showing. Cushing senior forwards Dom Biron and Margaret Sullivan were all over the ice, and physical too.

-- Once again, New Hampton failed to impress. Although the Huskies went went 3-1, their overall play fell below their high standard. They were trounced by Worcester and barely got by Culver in the fifth place game.

It appears that New Hampton has too many players, and its top players, many being D-I commits, seem to get only 3-4 shifts a period. That makes it hard for them to into the flow of the game.

The New Hampton goalie situation needs to improve if they are going to make a run at a playoff berth.

-- Worcester was a bit confusing to us. We watched them get beat up by Deerfield, but then they came back to trounce New Hampton. The Hilltoppers, however,  look like a legitimate D-II contender.

Worcester forward Ciara Wall, a UNH commit, seems to be involved in every Worcester goal. Sophomore defenseman Shannon Burke looks like a college prospect. She's big, strong and can really shoot the puck.

-- Winchendon was a mystery to us. They responded nicely after opening with a 4-0 loss to Cushing, but, overall, they were a bit of a disappointment, given that they have a solid group of talented players. The Wapitis will need to step it up in the second half if they hope to make a playoff run.

Winchendon sophomore defenseman Keri Clougherty -- named to the All-Tournament team -- stood out in every game we watched.

-- Berkshire had a disappointing tournament, losing three games, but did manage to beat tournament runner-up Cushing, 4-1, a big surprise.

That said, the Bears are in a rebuild mode. Coach Lisa Marshall has some work to do. The Appleyard sisters impressed us. So did freshman goalie Abby Hornung, who made the all-tournament team.

-- Culver Military Academy played everyone tough, but had difficulty scoring goals. We liked the play of Culver forward Madilynn Hickey. She had a strong tournament and was selected for the all-tournament team.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
#30 - G - Abby Hornung - Berkshire
#20 - Madilynn Hickey - Culver
#1 - G - Sarah Potter - Cushing
#6 - F - Margaret Sullivan - Cushing
#13 - F - Mia Sacco - Cushing
#7 - D - Deirdre Mullowney - Deerfield
#13 - F - Mary Edmonds - Deerfield
#16 - D - Ali Fujiyoshi - Deerfield
#33 - G - MJ Peters - New Hampton
#13 - F - Aimee Headland - Northwood School
#30 - G - Meagan Miranda - Worcester
#7 - D - Keri Clougherty - Winchendon

TOURNAMENT MVP
#33 - G - Liv Mikesell -- Deerfield

Harrington Notes

Champion: St. Paul’s
Runner Up: Nobles

Overall, the 2018 Harrington Tournament, usually our favorite event, was a bit of a disappointment, at least from a competitive standpoint.

BB&N pulling out -- they were replaced by Middlesex -- really hurt the field, but all due credit to Middlesex, for they competed hard. So, given the fact that Lawrence, Milton, St. Mark's and Westminster all look to be down this year, we were essentially left with a three-team tournament between St. Paul’s, Nobles and Williston.

The highlight of the tournament was obviously the championship game, which St. Paul's won, 2-1, in a thrilling shootout.

St. Paul’s
Goalie Maddie Beck, one of USHR’s top uncommitted players, was outstanding. On the offensive end, St. Paul's has three D-I forwards who comprise about 80% of the their offense in Tiffany Hill (Dartmouth), Natalie Tulchinsky, and Gaby Roy (BC), while Grace Martin, Christina Allard and Jade Arnon make up the young talented defense core (newcomers Allard and Arnone showed great composure in front of Maddie Beck, who was recently named the Canadian U-18 goalie, no small feat).

However, it looks as though the Pelicans have a shorter bench than in past years. While there's no shortage of grittiness and star power, it's unclear whether or not they'll have sufficient offensive punch late in games.

Nobles
By far the deepest team here, Nobles had a tremendous tournament and probably deserved a better result. The Bulldogs' defense is the best in prep hockey and gives up very few scoring opportunities, and when they did, freshman goalie Taylor Hyland was there.

The issue with Nobles at this point in the season is scoring goals. They have so much firepower up front that it's a bit of a mystery why they have such a hard time scoring. If someone is going to beat Nobles when it matters most, that will be the reason.

Sophomore forward Madison Michals had a very strong championship game, as did her classmate Katie Pyne. On the back end, we liked Lily Farden and Jenna MacDonald, the latter back in the lineup after missing over a year of hockey. MacDonald played very little, which was a bit of a surprise. Nobles will improve when she rounds into form.

Nobles' special teams were strong in their win Saturday against Williston, a game chock-full of power plays, penalties, and 4-on-4s. Both goals scored against Williston were with their special team units, a PPG and a SHG.

Williston
In short, young, fast, and fun to watch. The Wildcats are going to be very good for the next few years. Word at the rink was that Williston forward Christina Vote had committed to Wisconsin. Vote, a dynamic player, was outstanding all tournament. Senior Kate Holmes and Caroline DiFiore were strong as well.

By the way, you can take Williston forward Maura Holden off our uncommitted list. We heard she recently committed to Hamilton. Holden also had an outstanding tournament.

The Wildcats showed depth this weekend, but not to the level that Nobles did. A slow start Saturday against Nobles left them without much of a chance until a goal late in the third period provided a spark. The slow start was due in part to their inability to stay out of the box, something they need to address if they hope to make it to the finals in back-to-back years.

Lawrence Academy
We were surprised at how few players Lawrence had for the tournament. We knew the Spartans would be down a bit this year, but they are really low on numbers. They looked winded from the four-game slate in three days, but they still executed their game plan, and surprised some people.

In particular, their win against St. Mark’s on Saturday was a team effort led by senior Mia Fusco, junior Jenna Seibold, and sophomore Jess Michals. This was a determined team that never took a shift off. Senior goalie Shelby Guinard held her own, and at points bailed her team out of some tough situations. Depth will be an issue going forward but, interestingly, the longer they stayed in games the more it seemed as though they were going to come out on top.

Milton
Lost all four games at the Harrington, two of which came in overtime. The Mustangs are now 0-7-1 on the season, and have a very tough second-half schedule. While they struggled mightily this weekend, they were not as bad as the scoreboard showed. Star senior goalie Maggie Emerson didn't have her best weekend, and that hurt them, given their lack of goal scoring. Sophomore Lily Zavolas and senior Sadie LeStage played well on both sides of the puck.

St. Mark's
Now 2-6 on the season after beating both Milton and Westminster, the Lions will need a big second half to get back into playoff contention.

Like St. Mark’s teams of recent years, this squad is big and physical. It was tough to see them struggle against Lawrence given their performance a day earlier against a strong St. Paul’s squad. They have some special individual talent, but could not form it into a solid team effort when needed. Specifically, sophomore Lauren Tolve was extremely fun to watch. She can make something out of nothing quickly. Seniors Julianna Gong and Bailey Horne are talented as well. It should be interesting to see where the Lions go from here as they’ve played some really close games, but haven’t come out on top as much as we expected.

Westminster
The Martlets competed hard and, although the scores were close, they never really had a chance vs. either Nobles or Williston. The reason? They lack an offensive presence. Westminster has now lost four of its last five and stand at 3-6. We don’t see them making much of a push for a playoff spot.

Sophomore goalie Mandy Busky turned heads with her performances over the weekend. The Martlets displayed discipline in their games, but, against Middlesex, showed it could lapse quickly. Westy's result against St. Mark’s on Sunday, a 2-1 loss, was a stark change from their 5-2 win over the same team just two weeks ago.

Middlesex
As mentioned above, Middlesex did a nice job filling in for BB&N, and capped the weekend off with a 3-1 upset of Milton. That said, it was tough hearing that BB&N had bailed on the Harrington this year. Middlesex did not seem like a great substitute team, but, given the last-minute change, they were OK. Hats off to them. Middlesex struggled against powerhouses Williston and Nobles, but by Saturday afternoon they had found their bearings.

Props to the leadership of Caroline Bedrosian, Kiley Briand, and Lily Jarrett who worked to keep Middlesex close Saturday night against Westminster, a game most thought was not going to be much. Middlesex could be a team to pull off a couple of surprise results against D-II teams in the second half.

Odden Tournament Notes

Tournament Champion: Tabor
Runner-Up: Kent

-- Tabor was clearly the best team at the Odden. They might be the best team we have seen all year.

-- Tabor's top line of Anne Berry (UNH), Abby Newhook (BC), and Skylar Irving (NU) was the talk of the tournament. They were dominant almost every time they were on the ice.

-- Tabor is very deep upfront with Olivia O'Brien (Yale), Ashley Clark (PC), Clare O’Leary (BU) and Cindy Giandomenico (Colby). All were outstanding.

-- The Tabor defense held up for most of the tournament, but at times looked shakey under pressure vs. both Lawrenceville and Kent.

-- Tabor goalie Christine Steege played very well in both the semis and finals. We were worried about Tabor's goaltending situation going into the season but Steege stepped up.

-- Kent played well at times but, overall, did not have its best weekend. The Lions have some work to do but we feel that they will be there when it counts.

-- Kent twin sisters, Luisa and Lilli Welcke, sophomores from Germany, were very impressive all tournament.

-- Lawrenceville was the surprise team of the tournament. The Big Red beat Loomis in a shootout and then lost a heartbreaking shootout to Tabor in the semifinals.

-- Lawrenceville D Kate Monihan was the best player we saw all weekend.

-- USHR #3 Loomis struggled all weekend, going winless, which was really surprising. The Pelicans bowed to Tabor, a 5-0 loss that was never close.

-- Loomis relies heavily on its top line and NU commit Jess Schryver, but, unfortunately, they were not in sync all weekend. If that line is not producing, Loomis is going to have a hard time beating anyone.

-- However... we look for the Pelicans to bounce back in January and February.

-- Andover did not have a great tournament, forced to rely heavily on junior goalie Sophia Mereages. And she was terrific.

-- The Andover defense needs some work. They struggled all weekend under pressure.

-- The USHR top uncommitted player, Lily Feeney of Andover, had a strong weekend, scoring in both games we watched.

-- We are not sold yet on Andover being a playoff team.

-- Merageas and Lawrenceville PG Courtney Denaut (Yale) were the two top goalies we saw here.

-- Choate also struggled most of the weekend. The Wild Boars had a decent showing early vs. Andover, but ran into a buzz saw vs. Kent in the afternoon, losing 8-1.

-- Choate senior forward Kaitlyn O‘Donahue (Colgate) can dominate a game all by herself, but she got worn down as the tournament went on.

-- USHR #8 Choate does not look like a potential playoff team right now. They will have some work to do to get back into playoff contention.

-- Taft plays hard, as usual, under coach Gretchen Silverman but does not have the depth that they had last year when they were runners-ups (to Kent) here at the Odden.

-- The Trimper sister for Taft were very impressive, as was freshman goalie Sarah Elkas.

-- The Rhinos will be a team to watch in the second half of the season.

-- Hotchkiss is much improved team under new coach Corey Cooper. The Bearcats almost stunned Kent in game #1, losing 2-1. However, they lost to Andover in a shootout, and then beat Choate.

With the holiday tournaments coming up, we wanted to take a moment to highlight players we feel are strong college prospects. This will change as the season progresses, and we'll adjust the list accordingly. But this is a good starting point. The Top 10 listed players seem sure-fire to us. The next 15 are bubbling under, and, at the right college, they should prosper.

This Week's Girls' Div. I Prep Poll

1. Kent (4-0-0) The Lions are for real -- and we're looking forward to watching them at the Odden. They will face some strong competition there.

2. Nobles (4-0-1) The Bulldogs keep rolling. It’s a surprise to us if they even give up a goal.

3. Tabor (4-0-0) The Seawolves have the best offense in girls' hockey. And they're another team we are looking forward to seeing at the Odden. They open up against Loomis.

4. Williston (3-0-0) The Wildcats had a relatively easy week. But they will see Nobles on Saturday at the Harrington.

5. Loomis (3-0-2) The Pelicans had a tough tie vs. Deerfield on Wednesday, but rebounded with a strong win over Westy.

6. St. Paul’s (4-1-0) The Pelicans bounced back nicely this week with a huge offensive output -- a 9-2 win -- over defending Div. II champions Vermont Academy. It's a big week for SPS as they travel to Deerfield and then to the Harrington.

7. BB&N (3-1-0) After a surprising shutout loss to Brooks, the Knights posted an impressive 2-0 win over Deerfield.

8. Andover (3-0-0) Big Blue hasn’t really been tested yet. They will get tested at the Odden, for sure.

9. New Hampton (3-1-0) Not much of a challenge last week for the Huskies. We are still having a hard time understanding how they lost 6-1 at Nobles.

10. Choate (3-1-0) Although they lost 3-1 to Nobles Saturday, the Wild Boars look for real. They will be challenged at the Odden.

USHR Girls' Div. II Prep Poll, Week of Dec. 3, 2018

1. Vermont Academy -- The defending champs are loaded again, but face a huge test on Saturday at St. Paul’s.

2. Brooks -- Big challenge this week with BB&N and Milton. Goaltender Caroline Kukas gives Brooks a chance to win every game.

3. Rivers -- The Red Wings return a lot of firepower up front, but Tabor will present a challenge on Wednesday.

4. Worcester Academy -- The Hilltoppers won't be overly tested before the Watkins Tournament.

5. Tilton -- Following a tough 2-0 loss to Worcester, the Rams posted two solid wins. They look legit.

6. St. George's -- A big week on tap for the Dragons, as they face off against Thayer and Lawrence.

7. Gunnery -- Played St. George's to a 2-2 tie on Saturday. The Dragons will be facing Westminster and Kent this week.

8. Groton -- We were shocked to see the Zebras lose at home to a scrappy Berwick team, but were quite impressed to see them bounce back with a shutout of KUA.

USHR Girls' Div. I Prep Poll, Week of Dec. 3, 2018

1. Kent -- The Lions made a strong statement Sunday with an 8-1 thrashing of a strong Hill team.

2. Nobles -- The best defense in girls' hockey last year is even better this year. The Bulldogs rarely give up more than one goal.

3. Loomis -- Looks like they may have found a goaltender with sophomore Elinor Keehn pitching an impressive shutout vs. Nobles.

4. Tabor -- Offensively, the Seawolves are as talented as any team in girls' prep hockey.

5. Williston -- Coming off an incredible last-second win at St. Paul’s, The Wildcats are rolling.

6. St Paul’s -- It will be interesting to see how the Pelicans respond to their opening day last-second loss to Williston on Saturday.

7. BB&N -- It should be a bit more of a challenge this week for the Knights with Brooks and Deerfield.

8. Choate -- Great first week for the Wild Boars and new coach Ashley Bairos as they caught our attention with a 5-0 win at Lawrence. Choate visits Nobles on Saturday.

9. Deerfield -- The Big Green had an OT 3-2 win at St Marks on Saturday. This week will be a huge test as they play three of the top seven teams in girls' prep hockey -- Loomis, Nobles, and BB&N.

10. Andover -- (DNP)
