Belmont Hill Jamboree
Belmont, Mass. -- We've already covered three of the five teams at the Belmont Hill Jamboree, i.e. Belmont Hill, St. Andrew's College, and Proctor.
So we're going to concentrate on Winchendon and St. Mark's today.
Winchendon, which beat Belmont Hill 3-0 and tied St. Andrew's College 3-3 in Saturday's scrimmages, is much improved. Their top line of Matt Fawcett, Ben Thomas, and John Mulera -- all small, but skilled -- will be one of the better lines in prep hockey this winter.
Here are the players who stood out for us:
Winchendon
#22 John Mulera, RW -- Providence College recruit, who played for the Skipjacks U16 Team last year, is making the jump to prep hockey. A tenth grader, and a '99, he's a smart player, skilled, and a good skater. Needs to work on his game away from the puck. Similar in style to Patrick Harper, though not as dynamic. 5-7, 135 lbs.
#9 Ben Thomas, RC -- Top returning forward for Winchendon. A sophomore, he's the top line's catalyst. Makes plays. Pushes the pace. Has good hockey sense. Moves puck quickly with hard tape-to-tape passes. Was one of the standouts on the Cape Cod Whalers U16 Team going to Nationals. 5'9", 157 lbs.
#8 Matt Fawcett, LW -- 5'6", 135 lb. winger, a '99, is a transfer from Moses Brown where he was the leading scorer as a freshman with 30 points in 25 games. Fawcett is not a great skater, but makes up for it with his shiftiness. Competed hard, made plays, and worked.
#18 Sam Rand, RD -- 5'10", 155 lbs. defenseman skates well, and defends well with an active stick. Good size for an '00. Looked very much at home, like he'd been playing prep hockey for a year or two. Played last winter for Junior Bruins 16U team.
#19 Ivan Zhuravlev, RD -- 5'11", 165 lb. '96-born defenseman from Russia is a big, strong physical kid who defends well. Played a physical role on the back end. Senior is a returnee from last year's team.
#31 Brandon Graf, G -- 5'11" New Jersey native came up with some big saves against St. Andrew's College, allowing his team to emerge with a 3-3 tie. Junior split time in Winchendon net last season.
St. Mark's
#2 Henry Thrun, LD -- We expect Thrun, an '01 from the Minuteman Flames, to be one of the elite defenders in prep hockey in short order. He's got it all. He's savvy, smart, patient, can skate, and has good hands.
#17 Zach Tsekos, LC -- Sacred Heart recruit was St. Mark's leading scorer last season. 5'10", 165 lb. senior from Montreal is a late '96, so has experience and has proven himself as one of prep hockey's top forwards. Very slippery, excellent stick, dangerous down low. Has a real nose for the net. Had 58 points as a 10th grader, ,and 54 points last year.
#25 Peter Housakos, RD -- 6'3", 187 lb. late '96 defender from Montreal is a bit of a rover out there, covering a lot of ice surface. He has excellent size, is strong on pucks. Had a 14-22-36 line in 29 games last season.
Notes:
St. Mark's goaltender Ryan Ferland, crucial to the Lions' hopes to replicate last season's success, did not play, as he is out with an ankle injury.
We liked St. Andrew's junior LW Regan Kimens, a '99, more today than on Friday. Kimens is not a great skater, but at 6'0", 175 lbs. showed potential as a Div. I power forward.

Back in Cambridge
We stopped in at BB&N to see the Knights scrimmage Roxbury Latin. Both teams had merely three practices under their belt, and were in tryout mode. Roxbury Latin didn't have numbers on their jerseys, which didn't make things easy.
From what we saw today, both teams are solid defensively but lack offensive flair. The game was 2-2 after two periods. The third was played exclusively as special teams and the final score was 3-3.
We liked the play of BB&N senior goalie Sihak Lee. With South Korea hosting the next winter Olympics, they'll be icing an Olympic team and Lee, a late '97, is expected to get the nod in net. Facing NHL shooters might be... an experience. Lee is being recruited by Williams but may be deferring a year for the opportunity to play in the Olympics.
Roxbury Latin goaltender Bryan McGrath, a '98 junior who played every second for RL last season, played the first and third periods on Saturday, and was solid, though not tested much.
We liked some of BB&N's young players, like 9th grade RD Max McKay, who played at St. Mary's of Lynn last winter. A smart, gritty player with a quick stick, he's coming off shoulder surgery.
Grade 10 RD Mike Bermingham, a 5'8", 180 lb. from the Junior Bruins, was solid. A '99, he should be even better when he sheds some of his baby fat.
Junior LD Joe Gilbert, a transfer from Framingham HS, was another solid blueliner. Good skater.
Cam Cokinos, a '00 9th grade d-man, is huge, raw, and doesn't quite have his feet under him, but could become something in time.
We've seen 10th grade RC Jack Studley play better, but he's another BB&N player to keep an eye on. He's a '99.
BB&N's most polished, experienced player today was senior RD Michael Bibbey, a '97. Bibbey tore his MCL last year and missed nearly two-thirds of the season, so has something to prove. He should make for a solid NESCAC player.
Roxbury Latin, which finished 14-8-2 last year, returns the core of their team. The top d-men are late '99 sophomore -- and Providence recruit -- Michael Callahan, late '98 junior Max Alsarraf, '98 junior Joe Doherty.
Up front, the three leading scorers from last year are all back: '97 seniors Ronny Lestan and Max Ginsberg, and '00 sophomore Jimmy Duffy.
