Exeter Trounces New Hampton, 8-1

Exeter, NH -- A Jakov Novak goal 25 seconds into the game gave the visitors from New Hampton an early 1-0 lead in Tuesday afternoon's game here, but that was all Exeter goaltender Joey Lazzaro would allow the rest of the way as host Exeter came out on top of an 8-1 decision.

Exeter freshman LW Garrett Foster scored a pair of goals, as did senior RC Devin Moore. Forwards Ben Solin and Ryan Petti each had two points, as did defensemen Trevor Cosgrove, Jacob Dupont, and Peter Christie.

Exeter outshot New Hampton, 49-22.

The first period was noteworthy for the fact that New Hampton was called for five penalties, and wound up on the PK for pretty much the entire period. Exeter put 20 shots on New Hampton senior goalie Jacob Burhans. The puck was seldom down at the other end; New Hampton put three shots on Lazzaro.

So...not a good hockey game. After Exeter scored four goals in a six-minute span late in the second, it was as good as over. This typist could have spent the third period writing a concerto for the fluegelhorn, shearing sheep, or playing Tetris... something, anything.

New Hampton lost a lot in the offseason. Their top five leading scorers departed, four having been graduated. Also, Arizona State recruit Robert Herrman, a sophomore last season, left to return to his native California were he plays for the Anaheim Jr. Ducks U16s. That hurts.

New Hampton's top line this year consists of 6'3" senior Jakov Novak, 5'10" junior Chris Lemay, and 5'9" senior Josh Pope-Ferguson.

Novak, a late '98 from Windsor, Ontario, is a power forward. Lemay took the top-line center spot that would have been Herrman's had he stayed. On the right side, Pope-Ferguson showed good hockey sense and puck skills.

Third line center Ty Turgeon injured his shoulder on a hit from Jordan Haney late in the first, so didn't really get a chance to show what he could do.

6'2" sophomore RD Michael Kesselring, an '00 and coach Casey Kesselring's son, is New Hampton's top prospect. He appears a little stronger and more filled out than last season.

The key for Exeter is the return of all six d-men from last year. Co-captains Cosgrove and Christie, as well as Dupont, Jordan Haney, Derrick Spencer, and Graham Rutledge. If that's not the best group of d in prep hockey, they're not far off.

Cosgrove, a Colgate recruit, had a strong game, and is the team's #1 blueliner. Haney, a late '96 senior from Sanford, Florida, looks like he could have a breakthrough year. He's big, he's strong, and he's a powerful skater.

Up front, there are a couple of freshmen you will want to keep your eyes on in Foster, mentioned above, and Hunter McCoy. Both are '00s. Foster is a 12/12/00 so, in the Exeter scheme of things, he's young. Actually, very young.

5'7" right-shot center Devin Moore was very good yesterday. He has an excellent stick, makes plays, and is a terrific DIII prospect. His skills are top shelf, but he is also small and gets muscled off the puck easily -- when a defender is able to line him up, that is.

5'10" senior Ben Solin was excellent. The NESCAC schools are totally onto him, and Div. I schools are starting to show interest. Solin is not a dynamic type, but the puck seems to follow him around. His offensive instincts are acute. Just a pure hockey player. We can see him succeeding on the Div. I level, provided he plays a year or more of juniors and is able to gain additional strength. A lot of offense flows through the senior from Madison, Conn., so look for opposing defenders to key on him. Yesterday, he played on a line centered by Moore, with Petti, a PG, on the other wing.

"Solin has talent coming out of his pores," Exeter head coach Dana Barbin said. "He's made a lot of improvement in a year. He competes all over the ice. He's a hound out there. He's hungry."

Teddy Hart was graduated from Exeter last spring and is at Yale. Exeter doesn't appear to have someone to fill his skates. By that we mean a forward who combines size, athleticism, and skating ability. That could hurt them against some of the bigger, stronger teams they'll be facing. In due time, we shall see.
