No Losers in This One
Exeter, NH -- Dexter came close to knocking off undefeated Exeter tonight, but didn't and had to settle for a 2-2 tie in a game as good -- and as hard-fought -- as any we have seen this season.
"It felt like playoff hockey," Exeter coach Dana Barbin said afterward.
It did indeed.
For the first half of the game, it looked like Exeter, which held a 1-0 lead courtesy of junior center Devin Moore's rebound goal 25 seconds into the second period, was on the verge of taking control. Dexter was playing well, but it was also a slightly cautious, not-to-lose approach. Senior goaltender Nick Lanni, who has taken over as the Dexter's #1 goalie, was facing a lot of shots. And for the first half of the game he kept it a one-goal game.
Things became interesting when Dexter junior forward Patrick Daly scored after slipping a defender and breaking in alone on Exeter goalie Bryan Botcher. This, by the way, was a pure speed goal that not many prep players can make. Like Exeter's Teddy Hart, Daly is a player opponents have to be constantly aware of when he's on the ice. If he gets behind the D, he's off to the races, and that's what happened here.
Daly's goal changed the tenor of the game. From that point forward, the game was ratcheted up a couple of notches. Dexter, which previously had their hands full just trying to keep Exeter at bay, came to life, and, for the first time in the game, forced Exeter back on their heels and controlled play for a long stretch.
Exeter was allowing Dexter too much puck possesion time, and, not surprisingly, less than four minutes later, with 1:55 remaining in the period, junior Kevin Hock put Dexter up 2-1, a lead the visitors took into the second intermission.
Exeter, despite being unable to convert on any of their three power play opportunities in the game (Dexter had no power plays), got it back to 2-2 at the 2:49 mark of the third period when senior Andy Espinoza scored off a deflection in front.
With the score tied, 2-2, the third period featured great up-and-down hockey, missed chances, blocked shots, and some excellent saves. As the clock wound down, that game had that inevitability-of-overtime feel.
And overtime was the best of all. This was where Botcher had to come up big for Exeter, as Dexter controlled play early and in two separate sequences masses of players were all over the crease banging away at pucks, but Botcher stood tall and, while Exeter's winning streak is gone, they remain the only undefeated team in prep hockey.
"It was a great tie," Dexter coach Dan Donato said. "I think we found ourselves as a team. I think we played a more mature team game than we have lately. Our guys are understanding the system now. Our discipline on the forecheck didn't allow them to come up ice with speed. It was our best game in a while, but we still haven't put together a full game.
Donato reported that Lanni, Dexter's goaltender, gave a highly emotional speech in the locker room between the second and third period.
"He talked about a relative who had died of cancer. It was one of the best speeches I've ever heard," Donato said, adding, "It didn't leave me much to say."
