Sat. Dec. 13, 2014 Highlights
LA Ties Up Belmont Hill
Belmont, Mass. – With one minute left in regulation Lawrence sophomore Esbjorn Fogstad Vold fired an ice level shot, near corner, beating Belmont Hill junior goalie Matt Barrow and lifting Lawrence to a 4-4 tie on the road.
This is a different LA squad than last year’s group that finished 5-20-3 overall, and 1-12-1 in Keller play (slightly ahead of Governor’s 1-13-0). Second-year coach Robbie Barker has 13 new players on the roster. And it’s a young team – four freshmen, and nine sophs are rostered – but they didn’t seem fazed playing Belmont Hill, which is going through some early-season woes, and is also young. (They took a 2-0 lead into the third at Governor’s Wednesday, but gave up three straight goals, losing 3-2).
In the first period today, Belmont Hill took an early lead when sophomore Jonathan Folsom cut across the slot and wristed a high shot over the glove of Mike Robinson, Lawrence’s 6’5” junior goalie.
LA got it back late in the period when some bad d-zone coverage down low allowed freshman J.J. Harding to knock home a rebound of his own shot at the 15:52 mark.
In the second, Belmont Hill senior, top-line center, and Dartmouth recruit Charlie Michalowski, in the offensive zone, steamrolled LA sophomore Matthew Hayes on the half wall. It was totally unnecessary, and put Lawrence on a five-minute power play. LA was unable to take advantage, however.
And Belmont Hill got the next goal, on a David Giunta shot from the left point that deflected off Robinson’s upper arm. That gave the Hillies a 2-1 lead to take into the second intermission.
The third period was goal-filled, with Lawrence, early on, scoring a pair several minutes apart, the first when freshman Timmy Kent scored off a rebound, the second when senior Richard Cardillo’s shot from the point deflected off the shin pad of a teammate – sophomore Craig Needham -- and into the net to give LA a 3-2 lead.
Later in the period Bel Hill got two goals less than two minutes apart, from sophomore Sam Hesler, and senior Charlie McConnell, who knocked home a rebound to give the Hillies a 4-3 lead. But they couldn’t hold it, as Vold, a 6’3” sophomore from Norway, scored the tying goal with exactly 60 seconds left on the clock.
Early in OT, LA sophomore D Jamie Swiggett wrapped his arms around Michalowski, who was driving to the net, giving Bel Hill a power play, but they couldn’t cash in.
After the game, Belmont Hill coach Jeremiah McCarthy was clearly frustrated. “No one played consistently well for three periods,” he said. “We’re trying to get up to speed, and we have a lot of youth. We are not in sync.”
“In order to elevate your game, you have to use your teammates in order to get consistent results,” he said, adding, “We didn’t do that.”
LA coach Robbie Barker said he wasn’t happy about settling for a tie. “I don’t think we skated the way we’re capable of,” he said. “We have young kids and my expectations are high. Belmont Hill battled and we battled. It’s good that our guys could bounce back at the end, but we have a lot to improve on.”
“Robinson may not have had his best game,” Barker added, “but he competes and he made some good saves when he needed to.”
“Harding, Needham, and Kent were good. They played tough all over the ice. In the defensive zone, (sophomore F) Sam Swanson played really well tonight.”
Notes:
Lawrence’s new goalie, 6’5” junior Mike Robinson, played for the Boston Jr. Rangers last season and committed over the summer to UNH. He’s a ’97 from Bedford, NH and is being watched by NHL scouts. We felt he had mixed results tonight. Belmont Hill’s second goal, off Robinson’s shoulder, is one he would certainly want back. He probably also wants the fourth goal back, a rebound that gave Bel Hill a short-lived lead they were unable to hold. But Robinson also made some excellent pad saves, and with his height he’s not going to give up many goals low.
With this group of young players as a foundation, Lawrence could get back to the Keller upper echelon. With young players it’s hard to draw a timetable, but Lawrence will be a tough opponent. Nobody’s going to be walking all over them this year.
Exeter Nips Cushing
Exeter 3 @ Cushing 2 – In a battle of two undefeated squads, Exeter never trailed en route to topping host Cushing.
In the first period, Exeter senior F Sterling Weatherbie got his team on the board first, at 7:01. But Cushing’s David Cotton tied it up with a PPG late in the period.
In the second, senior F Stanley Brenner scored what would turn out to be the game-winner at 11:59. It came on a wrist shot from the blue line that went over Joey Daccord’s left pad, and looked like a goal that the Cushing senior netminder would like to have back. A little less than five minutes later, Exeter junior D Jacob Dupont scored to give his team a 3-1 lead going into the second intermission.
Early in the third, at 1:24, Cushing’s Bailey Conger scored a PPG to cut Exeter’s lead to one.
After that, Exeter’s penalty killing and PG Bryan Botcher’s goaltending were the keys to the third period. Cushing played hard and the top line of Conger, Cotton, and Jake Simons was a constant threat, but were only able to score on the PP tonight.
With 3:20 to go, Exeter had to weather one final storm as they were called for a penalty and, as soon as the penalty expired, Cushing pulled Daccord for the extra skater. But Botcher came up big, making several beautiful saves.
“I am proud,” Exeter coach Dana Barbin said. “It was a great team effort. Cushing played a great game. If Botcher hadn’t stood up to all that pressure in the final three and half minutes, we go to OT.”
Barbin described those final minutes as “a furious charge, a lot of crashing into the boards, and players blocking shots.”
It was very much a game of goalies. Botcher was excellent, stopping 30 of 32 and has a .933 save % on the season. Daccord stopped 20 of 23, and has a .930 save %.
The teams meet again Friday Jan 30 at Exeter.
Kent Nips Salisbury, 2-1
@ Kent 2, Salisbury 1 -- Two Kent goals 18 seconds apart late in the third period rubbed out Salisbury's 1-0 lead and gave Kent a big home win.
After a scoreless first period that was pretty even -- the shots were 8-8 -- and a second period in which Kent outshot Salisbury 15-7, the game was still 0-0 going into the third period.
Salisbury scored the game's first goal, and their only goal, at 10:44 of the final period. Junior D Dayne Finnson took a pass from fellow d-man James Gobetz and fired a shot from the point that beat screened Kent sophomore goalie Peter Negron.
Kent got on the board at 15:12. Sophomore F Tommy Tanner worked the puck into the Salisbury zone, then senior F Connor Landrigan came off the wall and beat Salisbury PG goalie Bailey MacBurnie with a top shelf short side goal.
The game-winner came at 15:30 -- 18 seconds later -- when junior D Greg Krisberg kept it in the Salisbury end, allowing UVM recruit Max Kaufman to feed Kevin Hill, whose shot beat MacBurnie between the arm and pads.
This was a fiercely-contested game, with a lot of pushing and shoving after every whistle, but it was also great prep school hockey -- physical, with a lot of up-and-down action, and two goalies who were excellent. The edge, though, goes to Kent sophomore Negron (25/26) as Salisbury had more Grade A chances. MacBurnie stopped 26 of 28.

@ KUA 4, Tilton 3 (OT) -- Kimball Union remains undefeated at 6-0-0, but had a scare today as they trailed a greatly-improved Tilton squad 3-1 with six minutes left in the third period. But senior F Jack Doherty cut the lead to one at the 12:18 mark and junior D Ben Finkelstein tied it with just 1:24 on the clock, sending the game into OT, where junior F Nic Hamre won it at the 4:29 mark. Tilton PG Connor Irving had two assists for the Rams.
Millbrook 4, Berwick 1 -- In a neutral site game played at the Eaglebrook School (Deerfield, Mass.), Millbrook's offense was led by senior F Jacob Moreau (2g,1a) and junior forwards Massimo Luciani (1g,1a) and Luka Piccolo (2a). Millbrook junior goalie Owen Johansson, who has a .952 save %, stopped 30 of 31.
@ Brooks 1, St. Mark's 0 -- Ths one was a goalie battle. For Brooks, senior Max Prawdzik (.985) stopped all 20 shots he faced. For St. Mark's, junior Ryan Ferland (.923) stopped 28 of 29. A PPG in the third period by Brooks senior F KJ Moore accounted for all the goals in this one.
Deerfield 5 @ Choate 2 -- In the rivalry game, Deerfield never trailed. Deerfield senior G Jake Kahler kicked out 24 of 26 for the win. Choate senior Sam Tucker (16/20) took the loss.
@ Loomis 5, Canterbury 1 -- Loomis moved to 5-0-0 behind the goaltending of junior Tim Birarelli (17/18) and two points apiece from senior forwards Alex Esposito (2g), Eric Benshadle (2a), and Cam Toohey (2a). Sophomore F Eric Esposito (1g,1a) had two points as well.
Moses Brown 3, Rye Country Day 2 (OT) -- An overtime goal from freshman forward Jacob Studley gave Moses Brown a win at the Princeton Day Tournament.
Hill School 4, Lawrenceville 3 (OT) -- Junior D Mathieu Simard (1g,3a) figured in all four goals, including a SHG and an OT goal, to lead The Hill past Lawrenceville at the Rider Cup at Albany Academy.
Albany Academy 7, Brewster Academy 3 -- In a penalty-filled game at the Rider Cup at Albany Academy, the host school romped. Junior F Kevin O'Neil (1g,4a), sophomore F Liam Bove (3g), PG F Jack Riley (2g, 1a), and senior F Nick Boyagian (1g,2a) were all big contributors.
Hill School 5, Wyoming Seminary 4 (OT) -- An overtime goal from senior F Colton McMenamin, his second overtime goal of the day, lifted The Hill to victory at the Rider Cup Tournament at Albany Academy. Senior F David Null (4a), junior F Michael Novello (2g,1a), and junior D Andrew Troy (1g,2a) also were big contributors offensively. McMenamin also had an earlier goal in the game. The Hill will face Winchendon in the championship game at 2:30 pm tomorrow.
