Nobles Knocks off Dexter, 4-1
Brookline, Mass. – Noble & Greenough, behind two power play goals and a three-point (1g,2a) night from senior Miles Wood, topped host Dexter before a large Friday night crowd here. Juniors Danny Jacobs (1g,1a) and Mike Fahie (2a) were also offensive factors for Nobles.

Nobles junior goaltender Brendan Cytulik played a strong game, kicking out 34 of 35 shots for the win. Dexter outshot Nobles 35-26.

Dexter went on top early in this game, scoring a first period goal on a Pat Daly tip at the 7:35 mark.

Nobles got it back at 12:20 as senior Billy Sweezey, just inside the blue line, teed up a shot that beat unscreened Dexter goalie Liam Moore five-hole.

In the second period, Nobles dominated, keeping the puck in the Dexter end for long stretches.

Nobles went up 2-1 when senior d-man Billy Carrabino, on the power play, fired one from the right faceoff circle, beating Moore cleanly at 7:22.

Nobles made it 3-1 when Wood made a great cross-ice pass right onto the stick of linemate Cody Todesco, who whipped a wrister past Moore at the 8:15 mark

In the third period, Nobles scored their final goal of the game when, on the power play, Wood, from the bottom of the right faceoff circle, fired a top-shelf wrister at the 3:08 mark.

With 6:32 left in the third, and with the play in the Nobles end, Wood plowed over Dexter’s Ryan Donato in the slot and was called for a major and a game misconduct. Donato left the ice holding his right shoulder, but was back out for the next shift.

Given a long stretch of power play time, Dexter put a lot of shots on Cytulik and hit a crossbar and a post. Dexter was without junior D Luke McInnis – he’s day to day – and his loss was particularly noticeable on the power play, which is normally potent, with a lot of puck movement and rotation from Matt Brazel, McInnis, and Donato on the umbrella, with big bodies Sam D’Antuono and Kevin Hock up front. Tonight, that lengthy PP at the end of the third was set up traditionally and was static despite a good number of shots. At any rate, that was Dexter’s last best hope – and they came up empty.

Afterwards, Nobles' head coach Brian Day said, “I was pleased with the effort, especially after our performance on Wednesday (a 5-3 loss at Tabor). We are trying to establish an identity, and that means caring about your teammates and self-sacrifice. We did that tonight and beat a hell of a team. It was nice for the kids to see.”

As for standouts, Day said, “Miles Wood was excellent in all three zones, with five hits in the first period alone. His back checks were terrific. It energized us.”

“And Cytulik made big saves and limited second chance opportunities.”

Dexter coach Dan Donato said, “They absolutely outplayed us in all phases. It’s hard to swallow when you get outcompeted. We have to be ready to play tomorrow.”

USHR Three Stars: 1) Miles Wood, Nobles 2) Brendan Cytulik, Nobles 3) Billy Sweezey, Nobles.

Notes:

-- Luke Stevens was back in action for Nobles tonight after missing the opening games of the season due to injury.

-- Dexter assistant coach Brian McColgan was voted into the St. Lawrence University Hall of Fame this week. McColgan, who holds all the scoring records by Saints' defensemen, scored 99 points from the blue line over his four years. In 1987-88, his senior season, the Walpole, Mass. native put up a 17-32-49 line in 36 games played, was named a First Team All-American, and helped lead St. Lawrence to the NCAA Championship Game, held that year in Lake Placid, NY. St. Lawrence came close, but lost to Lake Superior State, 4-3 in OT.
