Choate Edges Westy in OT, 2-1
Wallingford, Conn. – A goal by freshman Jack Hoey, off a clean win on the draw by senior captain Jeremy Germain, lifted host Choate to a 2-1 Founders’ League win over Westminster here today.
The goal, which came 2:04 into the extra session, came after Westminster controlled the first 90 seconds of overtime, pinning Choate in their end.
This was a good, fast-paced prep game with each team getting 7-8 quality scoring chances. The goaltending – Choate’s Sam Tucker and Westy’s Stephen Gasior – was very good.
After a feeling-out period, Westminster started to control the play a bit in the first period and, at the 12:17 mark, senior Jack Fitzgerald, on a 2-on-1, fed junior Johnny McDermott, who one-timed it past Tucker for a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second, both goalies made key saves to keep it a 1-0 game. First, Tucker came up with a big save on a one-timer, then, at the other end, Gasior made an almost identical save. Other than that, chances were few and far between in the second, which turned out to be scoreless.
In the third period, Choate, on the power play, tied the game at 1-1 when Germain, behind the net, fed it out front to junior Henry Marshall, who one-timed it past Gasior, blocker side, at the 3:04 mark.
And that was it. Westminster controlled most of the extra session – until Hoey’s strike.
“Westy always brings their ‘A’ game to Choate,” Wild Boars coach Patrick Dennehy said. “I felt they controlled the first period, and we had to battle to bring it back to more of an even game.”
Westminster’s Tim Joncas said, “It was a good prep school hockey game. But we have to find a way to win one-goal games.”
USHR Three Stars: 1) Jeremy Germain, Choate 2) Johnny McDermott, Westminster 3) Jake Smith, Choate – and, we should add, both goalies were excellent.

Taft Squeaks Past Avon in OT
Watertown, Conn. --- Taft got an OT goal from senior F Marcus Mollica to edge Avon Old Farms 4-3 here today.
The ending was not without drama, as Taft had to come back from a 3-2 deficit entering the third period. The Rhinos, however, got the tying goal at 8:23 of the third when senior D Tommy Mahoney blasted a shot from the point that looked like it was headed wide to the near side, but instead hit a player in front and, as it was sitting about six inches from the goal line, Peter Straub knocked it in.
Avon took a penalty late in the third. Taft had a good scoring opportunity, but couldn’t cash in. Ditto for Avon, which had a 2-on-1 off a blocked shot, but couldn’t convert.
Eighteen seconds of the penalty carried over to OT. Things got interesting here. With the play in Avon’s end, an Avon d-man made a cross-ice stretch pass to the far blue line to junior forward Jamie Armstrong, who had just hopped over the boards as the penalty was about to expire. However, the ref blew the whistle, ruling that the Avon player was still in the penalty box, at least partially, and, furthermore, the penalty had not expired when Armstrong received the pass. Therefore, he ruled, Avon had too many men on the ice. It was one of those calls that probably wouldn’t have been called but for the fact that Armstrong played the puck. Avon coach John Gardner was furious over the call – really furious.
On the ensuing power play, Straub had the puck at the top of the left faceoff circle and passed it laterally to Sam Nestor at the right circle. Nestor walked in a step or two and threw it toward net. It came right out front to Marcus Mollica who knocked it home to the delight of the Taft fans, who went nuts.
Early on in this game, there were some key moments. Taft had a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Matteo Mangiardi and Mollica, the latter on the PP, but Avon sophomore Patrick Harper scored two goals in the final minute of the period. The first was a beauty; the second a bunny.
Taft went into the first intermission a little shocked by the sudden turn of events, but came out and played hard in the second. Still, Avon scored the only goal of the second, taking a 3-2 lead on a John Giatrelis tally at 5:31, with Harper, who had a hand in all three Avon goals, assisting.
But that was it for the Winged Beavers. Taft tied it in the third on the aforementioned Straub goal, and then won it in OT.
This was a great prep game, a puck possession affair which was more about skill than physicality. There was little in the way of chipping out or dumping in. But passes were plentiful and fun to watch. The play was very back and forth, with no serious stretch of extended play in either end. Both goalies, Avon senior Tucker Weppner (21/25), and Taft senior Joseph Lissak (25/28) were very good. The top lines for each team, Avon’s Harper, Armstrong, and Jake Gresh, and Taft’s Straub, Nestor, and Mollica stood out.
Taft coach Danny Murphy said, “I was really proud of our team. I thought they showed real resilience. We played a great first period, then Harper scored a phenomenal goal followed by a long shot that Joe would normally have. It was 2-2 very quickly.”
“But the kids came out in the second and played well. They stayed with it. I was pleased with their ability to stay focused and play a full 54 minutes plus OT. Their resilience was the key to this game. They really could have packed it in after those Harper goals. That could have been a killer.”
“We’re a good solid hockey team,” Murphy added. “We can win these close games.”
USHR Three Stars: 1) Patrick Harper, Avon 2) Marcus Mollica, Taft 3) Joseph Lissak, Taft.

Berkshire, Cookson Blank Gunnery
Washington, Conn. – Berkshire came into Gunnery’s barn and, behind a 35-save shutout by 6’2” senior goalie Spencer Cookson, blanked Gunnery 2-0.
Berkshire took a 1-0 lead at 3:50 of the second when senior forward Zach Hale rushed the puck down the right side and his wrister hit Gunnery goalie Trevin Kozlowski’s pads on the far side, bouncing into the slot where sophomore Matt Koopman put it into a wide-open net. Junior Barclay Gammill also got an assist on the goal.
Cookson made a gem of a save with 3:52 left in the third when Gunnery junior Cam Donaldson got the puck by the left side wall near the outside hash marks and made a cross-ice pass to pinching junior d-man McKay Flanagan, who, from inside the right faceoff circle, blasted a hard one-time slap shot. Cookson slid from left to right to make a sterling glove save.
And that allowed Berkshire to go into the second intermission with the 1-0 lead intact.
Despite a furious Gunnery comeback effort in the third that hemmed in Berkshire for some lengthy stretches, the second period Koopman goal was all Berkshire would need. The same trio – Koopman from Hale and Gammill – notched an empty-netter with 30 seconds left.
“I thought our goalie was outstanding,” Berkshire coach Dan Driscoll said afterward. “Plus as a team we blocked 13 shots in the third period.”
“After,” Driscoll added, “we talked about how that is exactly the type of team defense we will need to win in this league.”
“It was the best game we’ve played all season.”
USHR Three Stars: 1) Spencer Cookson, Berkshire 2) Matt Koopman, Berkshire 3) Trevin Kozlowski, Gunnery.
