Sat. Dec. 6 Highlights
Salisbury Edges Williston, 4-3; Will Ejected
Easthampton, Mass. -- A Cole Poliziani goal with 2:52 remaining lifted Salisbury to a hard-earned 4-3 win over host Williston-Northampton today.
On the winning goal, Williston was breaking out of the zone when the puck hit a linesman standing against the boards just outside the blue line and deflected onto the stick of the junior from Oakville, Ontario, who fired it under the crossbar, beating Williston junior goaltender Shane Mason -- and popping the top off the water bottle as well. Jordan Kaplan and Quincy Gregg were credited with assists on the play.
Salisbury head coach Andrew Will wasn’t around to see the end of this one, as he was ejected 39 seconds into the third period. Salisbury senior Kale Kane was assessed a major and game misconduct for a hit to the head. As Kane was heading to the box, Will, who felt it should have been a minor, calmly questioned the call to one referee when the second ref came over and quickly tossed him.
After the game, Will said, “I didn’t even get the chance to get in any good words.”
Our reporter on the scene, along with both coaches, felt it was a terribly officiated game – equally bad both ways.
At the start of the game, Salisbury came out blazing and broke to a 1-0 lead on a goal from Kaplan at the 2:19 mark. Williston answered with a goal from senior forward Jack Gethings at 8:55.
At the 10:03 mark, Salisbury got a powerplay goal from junior defenseman Dayne Finnson to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second, Williston, a tenacious, feisty team came out hard, changed their forecheck to a really aggressive 2-3 with the D pinching hard along the wall – and dominated the first five minutes of play. They did everything but score.
However, right after the flurry, at the 6:31 mark, Williston’s Gethings scored his second goal of the game, on a breakaway, to tie it up at 2-2.
About 30 seconds later, Salisbury’s Poliziani, off a rebound, had a wide-open net to shoot at, but hit a post.
However, Salisbury would go up 3-2 when senior Vimal Sukumaran scored on a rebound of a Kane shot at 8:30.
In the third, Salisbury killed off the major to Kane to start the third, then a big hit by a Williston defenseman led to a 3-on-1 for his teammates which junior Jack Kelly finished off by firing the puck over the glove of Salisbury PG goalie Bailey MacBurnie at 9:31 of the third to tie it at 3-3. Senior Brandon Bork got an assist on the goal.
A good stretch of back-and-forth hockey followed until, with 2:52 left, Poliziani made amends for missing the open net by scoring the game-winner. Williston pulled Mason and had a flurry at the end – but to no avail.
The final shots were 37-21 in favor of the visitors. Mason was very good for Williston, taking away everything down low. He also controlled rebounds well. Salisbury was the better, deeper team, but Williston showed a lot of mettle. They are tough to play against. Not a dump-and-chase team, they prefer to move the puck.
“They are a tough team to play against in their barn,” said Will afterward.
Their top line of sophomore Nick Schofield, PG Jared Karas, and senior Tyler Scroggins was kept off the scoreboard but were effective nonetheless.
Williston coach Derek Cunha said, “The margin of error is so slim when you are going up against the big dogs. You just can’t make turnovers in the neutral zone or take too many penalties.”

Kimball Union 6 @ Vermont Academy 2 – Six different scorers came through for the Wildcats, and junior Elijah Harris kicked out 26 of 28 shots. Junior F Justin Cole (1g,1a) figured in both of VA’s goals.
Avon Old Farms 8 @ Albany Academy 2 – The hosts held a 2-1 lead halfway through the second, but Avon scored seven unanswered goals from that point on. Sophomore Patrick Harper (1g,4a), junior Jamie Armstrong (3g,1a), and senior Chase Zieky (1g,2a) led the Winged Beavers attack.
Brooks 5 @ BB&N 0 – An efficient, well-balanced Brooks squad blanked an extremely young BB&N squad behind a pair of goals from senior PJ Kelleher. For BB&N, junior goaltender Sihak Lee hung in there, stopping 38 of 43 shots. Brooks senior Max Prawdzik (11/11) had the shutout.
Loomis-Chaffee 4 @ Trinity-Pawling 3 – Loomis, behind a pair of goals from sophomore Eric Esposito and single goals from Shamus Fenton and Alex Esposito, took a 4-0 lead into the third period, but almost let it get away as Trinity-Pawling scored three times in the third period to make things interesting.
@ Rivers 3, Pingree 0 – Three different scorers found the back of the net for host Rivers, and junior G Peter Ciccarelli stopped all 12 shots he faced.
@ Westminster 5, Northfield-Mt. Hermon 4 – Midway through the second period the visitors from NMH held a 4-1 lead, but Westminster came back with four straight goals. Westminster outshot NMH, 41-20.
@ Groton 5, Deerfield 1 – Deerfield outshot host Groton, 45-30, but junior goaltender Matt Efros (44/45) was up to the task. Junior Matthew Winter notched a hat trick for Groton; senior Ace Cowens had four assists.
St. Mark’s 3 @ Winchendon 3 – Senior Olivier Caron (2g,1a) figured in all three goals as Winchendon took a 3-0 lead. St. Mark’s woke up late in the second and came back with three of their own to pull out a tie on the road. Junior Peter Housakos (1g,1a) and Luke O’Brien (2a) led the way.
@ Exeter 7, Kent 4 – At the Exeter Invitational, Kent held a 3-2 lead after the first period, but Exeter owned the second, scoring four straight goals. Senior Teddy Hart had a pair of goals for Exeter, as did Andy Espinoza (the second being an empty-netter). Junior D Greg Krisberg (1g,2a) figured in three of Kent’s goals. Exeter outshot Kent, 39-24.
@ Hotchkiss 5, Canterbury 3 – This one was a 2-2 game halfway through the second, but Hotchkiss scored three straight goals to win it. Senior F Greg Pezza (2g) and senior D Will Pasik led the Hotchkiss attack. Senior goalie Louis-Phillipe DeCourcey stopped 23 of 25 shots for the win.
@ Noble & Greenough 5, Belmont Hill 3 – Belmont Hill took a 3-1 lead into the final period, but Nobles junior Michael Fahie took care of that problem, scoring a natural hat trick in a span of 4:33. The second and third goals came 23 seconds apart.
@ New Hampton 2, Hoosac 1 -- PG defenseman William Conroy's PPG at 11:20 of the third lifted New Hampton to the win. Hoosac senior G Jordan Elwood (29/31) and New Hampton soph Thomas McLarnon (15/16) each had strong games.
St. George's 5, Moses Brown 0 -- In a game played at Brown's Meehan Auditorium, sophomore Toby Almeida notched a hat trick and junior G Colin Seeley (19/19) picked up the shutout. St. George's outshot Moses Brown, 47-19.
Gunnery 4, Tabor 1 -- At the Exeter Invitational, Gunnery got four goals -- two on the powerplay -- from four different scorers.
@ Proctor 6, Brewster 5 -- Proctor got six goals, each from a different player. Two of the goals were on the PP, and two were shorthanded efforts.
@ Millbrook 3, Lawrenceville 1 -- Junior Owen Johansson stopped 17 of 18 shots to lead Millbrook. Junior Monty Cunningham (42/45) was the hard-luck loser for L'ville.
Andover 3 @ Pomfret 2 -- Andover took a 3-0 lead on junior D Payton Jancsy's second goal of the game. In the third Pomfret scored a pair of power play goals. Senior goaltender Erik Wurman (24/26) earned the win.
Taft 3 @ Berkshire 1 -- Junior Sam Nestor scored all three of Taft's goals -- the final being an empty-netter -- to lead the Rhinos to the road win.
