Friday's Notes: A Little Controversy

The end of today's Rivers at Thayer game, a 2-1 overtime win by the hosts on Lincoln Griffin's second goal of the game, was marred by controversy.

The winning goal came about because the referee, who was behind the net on the side away from the play, failed to blow his whistle when his view of the puck, being covered up by Rivers goalie Ryan Colena, was blocked. In those situations, if the ref loses sight of the puck, he blows the whistle. This did not happen, so Thayer just kept doing exactly what they should have done, i.e play hard and whack away until the whistle is blown.

Eventually Colena -- puck and all --  was pushed over the goal line and into the net.

Goal.

Game over.

Rivers coach Shawn McEachern, whose bench was situated closest to the play, was livid. Neutral observers up on the overhead viewing deck at the Canton SportsPlex who had an unblocked look straight down at the goal were in agreement that, well, Rivers got screwed.

It was too bad because the game was a good one, with play relatively even both ways. Both goalies, Thayer's Mike Royer (22/23) and Colena (32/34) were excellent and both teams played hard throughout, for which they deserve full credit. It just should not have ended the way it did, on a bad call.

The atmosphere was great up at Kimball Union today, with the Wildcat student section packed and in full voice for the game against St. Paul's. The game lived up to the billing, too, as it was very intense and physical, with a fast pace and plenty of big hits.

The game was tight, too, with KUA holding a 2-1 lead through two. But SPS took a lot of penalties, which finally caught up to them in the third, when Brendan Riley and George Sennott scored to make it a 4-1 KUA final.

Due to a school disciplinary matter, KUA had to play without forward Dominic Franco and defensemen Ben Finkelstein and Dennis Cesana. All three will be back for Saturday's game at Vermont Academy.

With Finkelstein and Cesana out, new junior defenseman Jake Massie had to pick up a lot of the slack, and he was terrific, showing why he's one of the top available college prospects still out there. Elijah Harris, in net for KUA, was also excellent, particularly late in the second when the game was still very much in the balance and St. Paul's was applying steady pressure. Harris finished with 28 saves on 29 shots.

This was an excellent game for two periods. St. Paul's, whose top line of John Laurito-Connor Sodergren-Austin Ricci was strong, was very much in the game but ran out of gas in the third.

"You can't win games on the road when you take ten penalties," St. Paul's coach Mark Bozek said afterward. "I thought our second period was our best effort of the season so far but we took those penalties at the end of the period and that really cost us."

KUA coach Tim Whitehead said, "That looked like a mid-season game. Both teams competed hard and it was a physical and fast-paced game. It was a hard-fought win."

Whitehead said that what we're seeing of defenseman Massie, who has Hockey East interest, "is just the tip of the iceberg." Whitehead, whose sister lives in Montreal, found Massie playing high school hockey in Montreal.

We got to see St. Sebastian's and Milton today in Needham, and Seb's came out on top, 6-2. The game was closer than the score indicated, as the two teams were tied at 2-2 early in the third. But Seb's senior Will D'Orsi scored a powerplay goal at 4:23 of the third, and that opened the floodgates. Milton senior goalie Drew Hotte, normally very solid, gave up a couple of goals in the final few minutes that were uncharacteristic, clearing a puck right on to Paul McAuliffe's stick for the fifth goal, and then getting all bollixed up, leading to D'Orsis's second goal of the game, an easy wraparound into a wide open net.

Milton's defense suffered due to injuries and lack of depth. New forward Spencer Fox had to be moved back to the blue line.

St. Sebastian's top line of soph RJ Murphy, senior Will D'Orsi, and senior John Rourke was a force throughout. D'Orsi had two goals and an assist, and Rourke added a pair of assists. Sophomore defenseman Eric Jeremiah had a goal and an assist.

Danny Higgins was solid in net, stopping 20 of 22.
