--- Cushing and Dexter Battle to 2-2 Deadlock

Brookline, Mass. --- Nothing was decided as two of the top teams in prep hockey, Cushing Academy and host Dexter, battled to a 2-2 tie here this afternoon.

The game was an up-and-down affair with more skating than playmaking. That said, it was compelling viewing for an early December matchup.

Cushing got on the board just 57 seconds in, as top line winger Bailey Conger, with his back practically to the wall in the left corner, spotted d-man Patrick Horrocks breaking toward the net and hit him with a picture-perfect pass.

Dexter would get it back with a power-play tally by Kevin Hock with 1:35 left in the period. The play started when Bryan Green, from behind the goal line, spotted Sean Keohan on the point. Keohan fired on net and Kevin Hock neatly tipped the puck past Cushing’s Daccord.

After the tying goal, Dexter kept the pressure on in the Cushing end, but to no avail. The period ended at 1-1.

Dexter had a decided edge in play in an up-and-down second period. Both teams had opportunities off of turnovers, but with nothing to show for it. The plays generally died before turning into genuine scoring opportunities.

Much of the credit for that can go to the d-corps on both teams. Not many prep games contain more young, skilled defensemen than were on display today. Dexter boasted junior Luke McInnis, sophomore Sean Keohan, and freshman Jack Rathbone. On the visitor’s side, juniors Matt Dillon and Ethan Roswell, and 6’3” sophomore Brian Scoville were consistently noticeable. Only Dexter’s Keohan played prep hockey last year.

With 7:45 left in the third, Cushing senior Jake Simons made a heads-up play, taking the puck off the end boards in the Dexter end and tucking it short side on Dexter sophomore goaltender Liam Moore. However, Moore had intentionally nudged the post off its mooring and the goal was waved off. Cushing protested, quite rightly, but to no avail.

With four minutes left in the third, Cushing fouled up their defensive coverage by backing in and before they knew what was going on, Dexter’s Pat Daly, a repeat junior transfer from Andover, came flying down the left side of the big sheet with no Cushing player within 20 feet. Curling in front of Daccord all alone, Daly held the puck before tucking it home to give Dexter what looked likely to hold up as the game-winner.

But no.

Just 1:51 later, Simons got back the goal he had taken away from him earlier in the period, burying the rebound of a point shot by Cushing senior D Trevor Kacz. It was now 2-2, a score that held up through the end of the third and the entire five-minute OT period, which never generated much flow.

Both goalies were solid, Daccord stopping 36 of 38, and Moore 28 of 30.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t win on the road but getting any points is better than getting no points,” Cushing head coach Rob Gagnon said afterward. “We battled back and showed some moxie.”

Gagnon also felt his squad did a good job containing Dexter star center Ryan Donato. “We bottled him up as well as we could,” he said. “I thought our D kept an eye out for that toe drag of his, and fronted him well.”

Dexter coach Dan Donato was less pleased with the outcome. “I don’t think we finished the game,” he said. “That’s something we have to learn to do.”

Donato pointed out that for the second game in a row, his team had gotten off to a weak start. In Sunday’s exhibition against St. Andrew’s College, his starting line allowed a goal on the first shift. The exact same thing happened today.

“But I felt we got better in the second and third periods,” he said, “much like in Sunday’s game.”

“Cushing is a good team and a 2-2 tie is not bad. We’ll get better for having played this game.”

The two teams could meet again soon, in the playoff round at the Lawrence-Groton Christmas Tournament.

--- Salisbury Opens Title Defense With 5-1 Win Over Taft

Salisbury, Conn. – Salisbury opened its defense of its prep crown with a decisive 5-1 win over visiting Taft today.

The winning goal came off the stick of defenseman Brett Stirling at 1:29 of the third period, as the senior ripped a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Taft senior goaltender Joseph Lissack to the far side.

For the first two periods, Lissak was the story of the game, making the stops he had to make, plus a   highlight reel glove save on Kale Kane with 3:35 left in the second. Despite the shots being 25-11 Salisbury after two periods, Lissack was able to get the Rhinos to the third period on the road in a 1-1 game.

It was no small thing, either. Salisbury possessed the puck extremely well. If they had an opportunity they went for it. If not, they regrouped and tried again. Taft was effective over the first two periods in keeping the shots to the perimeter, clearing out in front, and limiting second-chance shots.

But the third period was a different story, as Salisbury buried four goals, two by Stirling, sandwiched around power play goals by junior F Mike O’Leary and senior D James Gobetz.

“I thought the third period got away from us,” Taft head coach Danny Murphy said afterward.

“We played well through the first two periods, but between killing off several penalties in the second and Salisbury’s constant puck possession our guys got worn down by the third period. I was happy with our team’s compete level, but that’s a very deep team over there.”

On the other side Salisbury’s Andrew Will said, “I thought we played hard tonight. We were sloppy in the beginning, and overanxious. But as the game went on, we calmed down and played our game.”
