The Weekend’s Key Games
This weekend’s games between Teams Under Consideration (TUC) – and we count four Top 16 vs. Top 16 games -- will have the greatest direct impact on the JSPR. And two of those four games are particularly crucial.
Berkshire @ Gunnery (Sat., 4:00 pm) — This game is important not for the direct JSPR comparison, because if Gunnery wins (unless they jump Berkshire in RPI), they still won’t win the direct comparison with Berkshire. But whoever does win this game will improve their record vs. TUCs, causing a ripple that could significantly affect other comparisons.
Choate @ Kent (Sat., 2:30 pm) -- If Kent beats Choate they will essentially prevent the Wild Boars from getting into the Elite 8. Again, it isn’t about the direct comparison, as Kent is already beating Choate in their JSPR and a Kent win wouldn’t change that. Choate is winning a bunch of JSPR matchups because they have a very high TUC record (#4 in TUC). If that changes negatively Choate will have a difficult time making the Elite 8 because they could suddenly find themselves losing some of the comparisons they currently hold because of a lower TUC record. If Kent loses, they will most likely still be in the Top 8. However, because their TUC record will drop, a loss could cost them home ice on Wednesday.
St. Paul’s @ Thayer (Fri., 4:00 pm) — After St. Paul’s OT loss to Dexter last night, this one might not matter as much as it did 24 hours ago. We think it is unlikely that St. Paul’s can make the Elite 8 at this point, as their RPI has dropped and they would need outside help to get in. As for Thayer, a loss will affect their seeding, but they are pretty much a lock for the Elite 8.
Exeter vs. Andover (Sat., 4:15 pm) — If Exeter loses they could drop, but probably not out of the Top 8. It looks like Andover would need a lot of outside help in order to get into the Top 8.
Other things to watch for:
-- Can Westminster stay in the top 16? If Rivers or Groton is able to hop over them that could have a big impact on the TUC’s.
-- Things are also pretty close in RPI between Nobles, Berkshire and Cushing. The RPI is the driver for a lot of things, so changes there can definitely cause shifts, but the reality at this point is that if the ‘expected’ teams win across the board, then there probably won’t be huge RPI swings at this point. However, anyone can beat anyone and a loss by one team can have a snowball effect across the board.
-- We think that Salisbury, Kent, Thayer, Exeter, and Nobles are pretty likely for the Elite 8. Salisbury is the only team we feel is a lock for home ice next Wednesday. Three of the other top teams (Kent, Exeter, and Thayer) are playing games against Top 16 teams, and with that there could be lots of possible outcomes for home ice. Throw Nobles into that mix and it really looks like the only team that is pretty set is Salisbury

A Short Break
A number of prep coaches -- and this is something we greatly appreciate here at USHR -- enter their line scores and/or box scores themselves. Some don't, however, and because of that we rely on a great volunteer who, for years now, has been seeking out and filling in all the missing scores -- a true labor of love.
Alas, he needs a break, and will be off duty until Sunday, at which time he will fill in the blanks and bring things up to date. In the meantime, we offer in advance our thanks to any coaches who enter their own scores.
And we thank our readers for their patience.

Snowday
It doesn't look good for Wednesday's slate of games, as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for pretty much all of New England.
Across Massachusetts, up to 10 inches of snow is expected.
If coaches could email information(at)ushr.com and let us know if your game has been canceled or postponed, we'd be grateful. If the latter, please let us know if you have a makeup date. We have some changes already, and they can be found in the prep composite schedule below.
By the way, the Weather Channel is calling this one Nika, which they are claiming is named for the Greek goddess of victory. When this typist was in middle school, the Greek goddess of victory was Nike -- with an e -- and still is, though perhaps that name was subsequently trademarked by the sneaker guys, assuming one can even trademark a Greek goddess. More likely, the Weather Channel didn't want people to think they were naming storms after sneakers. We can understand that. However, Nika, as in the name of the impending storm, is the ancient Greek word for conquer or victory, which seems like a foreboding name for a winter storm.
