Berkshire Stuns Top-Ranked Kent, 6-3

In last night’s prep poll, we highlighted the fact that Kent had held opponents to three or fewer goals in 18 of their 21 games. A noteworthy record, to be sure, but Berkshire has been just as stingy lately. Since a 4-2 loss to Nobles on Dec. 28th, the Bears reeled off a string of 13 straight games in which they, too, held opponents to three or fewer goals. That, however, came to a crashing end on Saturday, when Berkshire traveled to Westminster and was tagged with a 5-1 loss. Today, though, the Bears, playing at home on their big sheet, came out with a purpose and blitzed the #1 team in prep hockey 6-3.

Sophomore Barclay Gammill, a 5’9” ’97 forward from New Canaan, Conn., had four goals for Berkshire.

We were not at this game, but had a chance to talk with both head coaches afterward.

Berkshire head coach Dan Driscoll said, “I thought we played our most complete game of the season. We had good shape and structure in all three zones, and we were patient and welcomed the grind in our end. And we were opportunistic with the chances we did have."

On Gammill, who Driscoll has playing with seniors Charlie Corcoran and Craig Puffer: “It was a coming out party for him. He’s a cerebral player with great hands and a knack around the net. He can really shoot it. He was called up from the JV team halfway through last season. He worked hard and developed. Today was the culmination of his efforts. It was fun to watch.”

Driscoll has Tipper Higgins, who played all of last season with Corcoran and Puffer,  playing with fellow seniors Nick O’Connor and Jeff Thompson. “I did that because I was trying to get a little more balance and depth. That line was also great tonight.”

“I thought we were disciplined in all three zones – especially the neutral zone, where I felt we limited their ability to attack on the rush. We limited their number of shots.”

“The opportunities we had, we capitalized on. It’s big win for us.”

Kent head coach Dale Reinhardt, said, “(Berkshire) is a good team with crafty forwards. They outplayed us and they outworked us. Our guys didn’t have their legs and we struggled to get into the game. They were definitely the better team today. We were lucky to get out of the first period at 1-1. And then when they scored a couple to go up 3-1 in the second and we tried to play catch-up, we just couldn’t do it. They were the better team.”

“They clogged up the neutral zone well and gave us a very hard time. We kept trying to skate through the neutral zone and that certainly impacted us.”

We asked Reinhardt about senior goaltender Stephen Morrissey, who has been a major part of Kent’s success this season.

“It wasn’t Steve’s best game. He gave up a soft goal or two but they also scored on a couple of point-blank shots. He’s been so great for us all season, but he’s not going to have his best game every single day. A goalie needs his teammates to help him out sometimes, but that didn’t happen today. Everybody on the team is better than they showed. I thought it was a poor effort. I would say poor mental preparation hurt us more than anything.”

A Short Break

A number of prep coaches -- and this is something we greatly appreciate here at USHR -- enter their line scores and/or box scores themselves. Some don't, however, and because of that we rely on a great volunteer who, for years now, has been seeking out and filling in all the missing scores -- a true labor of love.

Alas, he needs a break, and will be off duty until Sunday, at which time he will fill in the blanks and bring things up to date. In the meantime, we offer in advance our thanks to any coaches who enter their own scores.

And we thank our readers for their patience.

Snowday

It doesn't look good for Wednesday's slate of games, as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for pretty much all of New England.

Across Massachusetts, up to 10 inches of snow is expected.

If coaches could email information(at)ushr.com and let us know if your game has been canceled or postponed, we'd be grateful. If the latter, please let us know if you have a makeup date. We have some changes already, and they can be found in the prep composite schedule below.

By the way, the Weather Channel is calling this one Nika, which they are claiming is named for the Greek goddess of victory. When this typist was in middle school, the Greek goddess of victory was Nike -- with an e -- and still is, though perhaps that name was subsequently trademarked by the sneaker guys, assuming one can even trademark a Greek goddess. More likely, the Weather Channel didn't want people to think they were naming storms after sneakers. We can understand that. However, Nika, as in the name of the impending storm, is the ancient Greek word for conquer or victory, which seems like a foreboding name for a winter storm.
