Dexter Thumps Nobles
Dedham, Mass. -- Dexter continued their strong start tonight, going into Nobles’ barn and coming out with a 7-5 win.

Junior forwards Ryan Donato (2g,1a) and Matt Brazel (1g,2a) each had three points to lead the Dexter attack. Senior F Mark Webber (2g), sophomore F Kevin Hock (2a) and senior D Liam Feeney (2a) each had two points for Dexter. In all, 12 Dexter players recorded at least one point.

Dexter came out with a strong first period, with Ryan Donato getting things started with a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat Nobles’ sophomore goalie Brendan Cytulik. Five minutes later sophomore forward Joe Feeney banged home a rebound in the slot to make it 2-0 at the first intermission.

The game’s key period was the second. Nobles, trailing by two, got their opportunity to quickly get back into the game when Dexter junior forward Sam D’Antuono was whistled for a major. During the ensuing five-minute power play Nobles was able to get one goal, on a Billy Sweezey shot from the left point. The goal came at the 7:36 mark. Later in the period, Nobles junior F Cal Burke came down the right side, turned the Dexter d-man, and beat Pat Fraser cleanly to make it 2-2 at the 12:44 mark.

It looked like Nobles had the momentum but, if so, it was short-lived as Dexter answered with three straight goals in a span of 1:48. The first goal, which would turn out to be the game-winner, came when Mark Webber jammed home a puck in the crease – a powerplay tally. Just 39 seconds later, Brazel capitalized on a Nobles turnover, going high glove side to make it 4-2. A little over a minute after that, a Ryan McDougall shot from the point was tipped home by Kevin Merle. Dexter’s blitz gave them a 5-2 lead to take into the second intermission.

When the teams returned to the ice for the start of the third period, Nobles head coach Brian Day had replaced his starting goalie, Cytulik, with sophomore Austin Bonasia.

Nobles appeared to get the message, as soph Cam Burke scored at the 1:37 mark to cut the Dexter lead to 5-3. But again, Dexter had a quick answer as, just 1:19 later, Donato scored perhaps the prettiest goal we’ve seen since the start of the prep season, displaying stick wizardry as he reduced the Nobles defenders to lampposts while cruising down the slot and beating Bonasia to make it 6-3. Dexter made it 7-3 on the powerplay, when Webber scored his second of the night, tipping home a Liam Feeney point shot.

The game held there for about ten minutes and it looked like the string was just being played out, but Nobles got a late boost, scoring two goals in the final two plus minutes, the first on a Billy Carrabino shot from the point, and the second, with 12 seconds left and the goalie pulled, when Miles Wood converted from a scrum in front.

Nobles outshot Dexter 41-29, but weren’t skating or making plays like they did last weekend in the win at Belmont Hill. Wood, who has been on a tear, wasn’t much of a factor in this one. Nobles is also having a hard time keeping the puck out of their net, having given up 12 goals over their last two games – five in a 9-5 win over Tabor and seven tonight. The forwards are going to have to turn into a reincarnation of the ’76 Canadiens to overcome that.

“I thought we played a really disciplined game,” said Dexter head coach Dan Donato. “We played a really good first period. But that five-minute major really impacted the game and when they tied it at 2-2 it became a real test of character. We scored three goals – that impressed me. It was a great testament to our seniors and goalie to keep us in there and not let that lead slip away.”

Donato pointed out that Nobles is great in transition, and the coaches kept a third guy high in an effort to neutralize the rush.

Donato felt the key guys for Dexter tonight were, up front, Ryan Donato and Matt Brazel who, the coach said, “was a big impact guy tonight.” Donato also praised the play of Liam Feeney on D.

“A lot of guys played well for us tonight," he added.
