Sat. Dec. 7 Highlights

Salisbury 3 @ Williston-Northampton 2 – In an extremely rough, penalty-filled game – ten per team -- in which the refs had difficulty keeping things under control, Salisbury, relentless on pucks, scored all three of their goals in a span of less than three minutes in the second period.Williston senior goalie Tim Nowacki (35/38) kept his team in the game. Senior Mitchell Datz (23/25) got the win for Salisbury. Senior Mitchell Smith had two points (1g,1a) for Salisbury and he, along with his brother Evan, were a force all night. 6’3” Salisbury senior F Harrison Luce got a major for a hit from behind and was tossed.

Groton 4 @ Deerfield 4 – Deerfield had a 2-0 lead after one period, and a 3-1 lead midway through the second. However, the Big Green squandered it, allowing three straight goals. That gave Groton the lead for most of the third period, but a goal by junior Kevin Doyle at the 11:08 mark allowed Deerfield to salvage a tie. For Groton, 6’2” soph Michael Brown (2g,1a) and 5’7” junior Ace Cowans (1g,1a) were the top guns. For Deerfield, seniors Sam Lafferty and Trevor Yates each had a goal and an assist.

@ Proctor 4, Brewster Academy 3 – Undefeated Proctor (3-0-1) got three first period goals to take a 3-0 lead into the second period, but had to hold on and withstand a three goal performance from Brewster senior captain Joe Osaka to escape with the win. Osaka, a native of Tokyo, Japan, scored the final goal of the game with the goalie pulled for the extra skater and 1:19 on the clock. But Brewster was unable to get the equalizer. Proctor outshot Brewster 40-23. Brewster junior goalie Kevin Lacroix, coming on in relief and playing 43 minutes, stopped 35 of 36 shots to allow his team to get back in the game.

@ Taft 4, Berkshire 3 – Taft, trailing by a goal entering the third, got a pair of goals – from juniors Ross Colton and Peter Straub -- to pull out a 4-3 win at home tonight. Colton had two goals on the night, while Straub had two goals and an assist. For Berkshire, senior Craig Puffer had two goals and an assist. Taft is now 3-1-0, with their only loss coming to Salisbury.

Trinity-Pawling 4 @ Loomis-Chaffee 3 (OT) – 6’3” D Johnny Coughlin, T-P’s captain,  scored his second goal of the game with 48 seconds left in regulation to send the game to OT, where his teammate, 6’1” senior Kyle Zacharewicz, won it with one second to go. Earlier, T-P held a 2-0 lead after one, but Loomis, on a pair of goals from 6’3” senior Kristofer VanGameren, tied it up at 2-2 in the second.

Holderness 4 @ Worcester Academy 2
– Holderness got four goals from four different scorers, outshot Worcester by a vast margin, and never trailed in this game. But special credit in a losing cause must go to 6’0” Worcester junior goaltender Calum Hepburn (from Dumfries, Scotland) who kicked out 58 of the 62 shots he faced. PG Patrick Flahive scored both of Worcester’s goals.

@ St. Andrew’s 5, Stanstead College 0 – Justin Fregona (1g,2a), Warren Foegele (1g,1a), and J.D. Falconer (1g,1a) led St. Andrew’s. Matthew Galadja (14/14) got the shutout. SAC held a 35-14 edge in shots.

@ Avon 2, Albany Academy 2 – Avon took a 2-0 first period lead on goals from seniors Jackson Tucker and Mac Carnes. Albany bounced back in the second with a pair of goals off the stick of junior Shawn Knowlton, the second on a 5x3 PP. Avon senior G Cody Doyle stopped 30 shots, while AA senior Josh Egan stopped 38.

Kents Hill 3 @ Tilton 3 -- Tilton senior Nick Tomljenovic scored with 1:44 left in regulation to lift his team to the tie. Tilton outshot Kents Hill, 42-36.

Thayer 8 @ Governor’s 1 – Juniors Lincoln Griffin (2g,1a) and Adam Gaudette (1g,3a) led the Tigers attack.

BB&N 3 @ Lawrence 0 – Senior Steve Grinsztein notched the shutout and the Knights got goals from three different scorers. BB&N outshot LA 29-18.

@ Brooks 6, St. George’s 2 – St. George’s held a 2-0 lead early in the second, but Brooks stormed back with six unanswered goals (three on the PP), each goal coming from a different scorer. Brooks had a 46-15 edge in shots.

@ Kimball Union 3, Vermont Academy 1 – KUA got goals from three different scorers. Junior Gavin Nieto (24/25) picked up the win, while VA senior Simon Leiva (39/42) was the hard-luck loser.

@ Lawrencevile 3, Millbrook 2 – Lawrenceville goalie Monty Cunningham stopped 36 of 38 shots to earn the win.

St. Sebastian’s 2 @ Milton 2 – A goal from Milton senior D Patrick Krzesaj at 6:15 of the third lifted the Mustangs to a 2-2 tie.

Canterbury 4 @ Hotchkiss 0 -- 6’4” senior G Chris Short stopped all 31 shots he faced for the shutout win. Senior D Connor Collier, senior F Mark Bowen, and junior F Shane Sellar each had a goal and an assist.

@ Rivers 5, Pingree 2 – Freshman F  Charlie Lawerence and junior D Matt Lombardozzi each had a goal and an assist. Freshman D Michael Young and senior F Miles Gendron each had two assists. Rivers outshot Pingree 45-11.

Hoosac 3 @ New Hampton 3 – A goal from junior F Guillaume Beaulieu with 5:30 left in regulation lifted Hoosac to a 3-3 tie with host New Hampton.

@ St. Andrew’s College 5, Edge School 2 – Seniors Matthew Kennedy (1g,2a) and Warren Foegele (3a) and junior JD Falconer (1g,1a) led the St. Andrew’s attack. Senior Brett Nichol (24/26) picked up the win for the Saints.

Kent 6, Tabor 2 (@ Exeter Invitational) – Junior forward Max Kaufman (1g,3a), senior Brendan Soucie (2g,1a), and sophomore D Greg Krisberg (1g,1a) led the Kent attack. Senior goaltender Stephen Morrissey (23/25) earned the win. Kent outshot Tabor, 45-25.

The Midwest Prep Hockey League’s Bowers Division continued their weekend showcase in Aurora, Ontario on Saturday with four regular season games.

The host squad from St. Andrew’s College (SAC) opened the day against Stanstead College. The Saints would take the game 5-0 but the play was much closer than that as the Saints didn’t break the deadlock until the midway point of the second period, but from there they took control. Goals were scored by J.D. Falconer, Warren Foegele, Austin Cho, Matthew Graham, and Matthew Kennedy. Junior netminder Matthew Galajda earned the shutout.

In the second game of the day, Rice Memorial continued their strong play on the weekend, taking advantage of a shorthanded Ridley College squad and skating off with a 2-1 victory. Timmy Shea and Nicholas Martineau scored for Rice, while Shane Woolsey scored for Ridley.

To open up the evening’s round of matches, SAC took on a well-rested Edge team. Again, the Saints’ 5-2 victory was somewhat misleading as the teams played a tight game until the Saints pulled away in the third. Junior Kyler Magus opened the scoring for Edge before Justin Fregona, Matthew Kennedy, J.D. Falconer, and Zach Marcus answered with four straight. Edge senior Kurtis Woodhouse cut the SAC lead to two before Zac Masson sealed the win with a late powerplay goal.

Saturday’s final game pitted Ridley College against Stanstead College. After Stanstead opened the scoring with a goal off the stick of senior Jack Patterson, Ridley took control, scoring six straight. Juniors Trent Fox and Shane Woolsey each had two, and Alec Samuels and Trevor Bush had one apiece. Stanstead senior Max Hopper scored to make it a 6-2 final.

The final two games of the weekend take place on Sunday morning with Stanstead taking on Edge and then SAC hosting Rice. Check out the results at www.themphl.com.
