Hoggers Keep Martlets Down
Gill, Mass. -- It was a matchup of two teams that have started their seasons in opposite directions: Northfield-Mt. Hermon came in with a record of 3-0 with victories over Stanstead, Hoosac, and Brunswick. Westminster, on the other hand, came into the season with high expectations but, after losses to Trinity-Pawling and Brunswick came to NMH looking for their first win of the season.
They didn’t get it, as NMH prevailed, 3-2.
The game started off with a fast pace, both teams trading opportunities early before NMH capitalized when PG Bradley Allen – after junior D Alden Weller put the puck on net from the point -- banged home the rebound of a shot by PG Will Pappas at the 1:55 mark.
Westminster tied the game at 1-1 when 6’3” senior F Mario Benicky redirected a shot from the blue line with 8:07 left in the first.
NMH went up 2-1 just 54 seconds later when 6’2” Matt Greenwood, a PG from Oakville, Ontario, fired a low shot through traffic in front. Hamilton never saw the shot and didn’t react until the puck was already in the back of the net.
The Hoggers would make it 3-1 with 4:26 left in the first as PG Christian Heidelberger scored on a 5x3 power play. 6’4” junior Ben Freeman, a UConn recruit, took a shot from the high slot that rebounded to Heidelberger hiding out by the side of the net. Hamilton had no chance.
The second period, which was scoreless, was dominated by Westminster. Ditto for the third. However, despite controlling the play, the Martlets had a hard time placing shots on net. Westy was rewarded for their play with multiple power play opportunities but tried to be too cute with the puck on the man advantage, thus passing up numerous scoring chances.
Westminster would pull within one late in the third. 6’2” sophomore Johnny McDermott skated off the boards on the powerplay, wristing a shot from inside the circle that beat Kyle Redmond with 3:55 to play. That would be as close as Westminster would get in this one, falling to 0-3. Senior Zac Hamilton had 28 saves in the loss. NMH climbed to 4-0 with PG Kyle Redmond stopping 34 shots in the win.
