RPI and JSPR: Updated Numbers

Some thoughts on the numbers:

-- Dexter, despite a 17-1-5 record and a virtual dead heat with Kent and Salisbury in RPI, has dropped down to #8 in the JSPR Ranking. This is where JSPR really gets to the nitty gritty in measuring strength of schedule. Dexter is 0-1-2 against top 16 teams (a loss to Exeter and two ties vs. Cushing) and their opponents’ and opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage are also both low. JSPR, for those of you who are new to this, is a mathematical formula that aims to determine how each team would fare if all played an identical, equally tough schedule. The system was created when Div. II prep hockey was dropped four years ago and smaller schools with historically weaker schedules suddenly became Div. I teams.

-- Choate is helped by their TUC Ranking as they are an impressive 4-1-2 against the Top 16 (two wins over Avon, plus single wins over Westy and Loomis; a loss to Salisbury; and ties vs. Berkshire and Exeter). However, all of that is balanced against the fact that they have also lost a number of games to teams that they ‘should have’ beaten. If the season were over right now the Wild Boars, currently at #9 in JSPR, would be kicking themselves. Of course, every year teams that finish just south of the Elite 8 have one or more games that really eat at them.

-- Milton Academy moves into the Top 16 this week and Canterbury moves out. Milton, which beat Belmont Hill for the second time this season yesterday, has played and defeated a number of top 16 teams, but they have also lost to a number of them.

-- Keep an eye on which teams are entering into and dropping out of the top 16 over the next couple of weeks. That is likely to have a greater impact on who makes the Elite 8 tournament than anything else.  

-- Right now, the top four teams – Berkshire, KUA, Belmont Hill, and Gunnery – look like a solid lock to make the Elite 8. They are significantly ahead of the next four in RPI. That said, their seeding -- and even whether or not they earn home ice – is still up in the air. Berkshire vs. Gunnery on the final day of the regular season could be a huge game.

-- Dexter, Kent and Salisbury are in a virtual dead heat for the fifth RPI spot but this could easily change in the next few games.

-- After a down year last year, the Founders’ League has bounced back, with six teams currently in the Top 16.

-- We published this a few weeks ago, but a couple of people asked us where exactly on the site it was hidden away, so here it is again, the large school/small school breakdown. With this document (it's a Word doc), you can begin to get a sense of which schools, should they fail to reach the NEPSIHA 'Elite 8', would land in the Martin/Earl 'Large School Tournament' and which teams would land in the Piatelli/Simmons 'Small School Tournament.'
