Wed. Jan. 18 Highlights

Taft 3 @ Loomis-Chaffee 1:
Sophomore Andrew Gaus’s hat trick was all the offense Taft needed to beat Loomis 3-1 on the road. Shots were 34-20 in favor of Taft.

@ Gunnery 2, Millbrook 1: Junior forward Anthony Luzzi’s third period strike broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Gunnery to a home win over Millbrook. Gunnery junior Anton Frondelius made 28 stops to earn the win in net.

St. Sebastian’s 3 @ Andover 3: St. Seb’s and Andover skated to a 3-3 tie. There was little to separate the two sides as each team poured 40 shots on net. Both goalies – junior Ross Bendetson for Andover and senior Gordon Donnelly for St. Sebastian’s – stood their ground with 37 saves apiece. Andover post-grad Tim Driscoll found the back of the net twice for the hosts.

@ Canterbury 5, Westminster 4 (OT): Junior forward Jeff Celinker’s second tally of the game ended things 4:18 into overtime as Canterbury upset Westminster 5-4. The Saints – just 4-12 on the season – have been playing well as of late, with close losses to Choate and Albany Academy, and were finally rewarded with a big home win.

@ Cushing 4, Thayer 3 (OT): Cushing needed an overtime goal from senior JR LaPointe to beat 3-9 Thayer at Ashburnham. The visitors tied it up with only one second remaining on a goal by sophomore d-man John Barry, only to lose less than two minutes into overtime. Thayer sophomore goaltender Rob McGovern kept his team close despite spotting the Penguins a 34-24 shot advantage.

Avon 2 @ Northfield-Mt. Hermon 1: Junior forward Vincent Russo scored with one second left on the clock (!) to give Avon a 2-1 win. Avon senior goalie Michael Santaguida kicked out 31 of 32 shots to pick up the win.

Middlesex 6 @ Roxbury Latin 0: Middlesex rolled over RL, 6-0, for the second straight shutout for the Zebras, who got goals from six different scorers. Senior Michael Pigula made 20 saves to post the shutout. Shots were 67-20 Middlesex.

Kent 7 @ Hotchkiss 2: Kent kept it rolling, blasting Hotchkiss 7-2 to make it five wins in a row. Kent utilized a balanced offense, with seven different players finding the back of the net. Meanwhile, only senior Chris Hamel (2g) could solve Kent’s Kevin Dluhy (24 saves).

St. Mark’s 5 @ Worcester Academy 0: St. Mark’s junior goalie Tanner McPhee made 27 saves to shut out Worcester Academy and lead his team to a 5-0 win. Junior captain Mike Pontarelli had two goals and an assist and now has 53 points on the season, which leads all of New England by a comfortable 10 points.

Salisbury 9 @ Trinity-Pawling 2: Salisbury used four powerplay goals to crush T-P 9-2. Senior forward John Stevens (1g, 4a) led the way for the visitors with five points. Shots were 54-21, Salisbury.

@ Pingree 7, Portsmouth Abbey 2: Freshman Nolan Redler (2g, 3a) and senior Nate Soter (1g, 3a) had big days as Pingree routed Portsmouth Abbey 7-2. Portsmouth Abbey senior Connor Rodericks faced a lot of rubber, making 50 saves on 57 shots.

@ Williston-Northampton 4, Vermont Academy 0: Williston didn’t have much trouble with Vermont Academy, winning 4-0. Junior Matt Beliveau (14 saves) had a relatively easy shutout, while down at the other end, senior Brendon Leeming (49 saves) was under siege, facing 53 shots.

@ Berkshire 2, Choate 1: Choate freshman netminder Sam Tucker’s 38 saves weren’t enough as Berkshire earned a 2-1 win over Choate. Berkshire senior Pat Feeley, of Winthrop, Mass., had a strong game in goal, picking up the win with 24 saves on 25 shots.

Rye Country Day 5 @ Harvey 0: Sophomore forward Zachary Coppola had two goals and an assist and Rye coasted to a 5-0 road win over Harvey.

@ Albany Academy 6, Hoosac 5: Albany Academy used five second period goals to squeeze past Hoosac, 6-5. Senior Mark Knowlton (1g, 2a) and freshman Sean Dempsey (2g) paced the Albany offense, while Hoosac’s Nicholas Clewer registered two goals in a losing cause. Shots were 48-32 in favor of Albany.

@ Kimball Union 6, Deerfield 3: Kimball Union doubled up Deerfield at home behind strong offensive performances from juniors Jonathan Charbonneau (2g) and Casey Miller (1g, 2a). KUA outshot Deerfield 41-20.

Nobles 5 @ St. Paul’s 2: Junior forward Adam Gilmour’s hat-trick helped Nobles pick up a big win up at St. Paul’s. Connor Maher made 30 saves in goal to pick up the win. St. Paul’s senior forward Josh Dickman had a goal and an assist in the loss.

Brooks 2 @ Rivers 1: Senior Zander Buttress scored on the powerplay at 1:39 of overtime to give Brooks a 2-1 win over Rivers. Brooks junior Colin Langham got the win in goal, turning aside 19 of 20 Rivers shots.

Berwick 3 @ New Hampton 2: Berwick, down 2-0 with four minutes to play in the second period, got three unanswered goals to earn a comeback victory over New Hampton. Berwick outshot New Hampton 40-24, but New Hampton junior Stephen Tomaro made 37 saves to keep it close.
