Prep Playoff Picture Taking Shape
Two weeks remain in the NEPSIHA season. If the top tier of the playoffs – the Elite 8 -- were to start today, the same eight teams would make the playoffs as per the JSPR article we posted on Wednesday. However, there are changes in the order. Here’s how things look this morning.
1. Milton (14)
2. Salisbury (14)
3. Cushing (12)
4. Kent (11)
5. KUA (11)
6. St. Sebastian’s (10)
7. Avon (10)
8. Nobles (8)
*The numbers in parentheses indicates the amount of JSPR comparisons won, with the maximum of 15.
Notes:
Cushing falls to 3rd while Milton and Salisbury move up:
Milton’s win over Nobles on Saturday gave the Mustangs a 9-3-1 record against the Teams Under Consideration, while Kent held steady at 5-2-0. This gave Milton the JSPR comparison victory over Kent, and thus the #1seed
With South Kent moving into the top 16, they now count as a Team Under Consideration. South Kent defeated Cushing 3 – 2 on Jan. 23, thus dropping the Penguins to 4 - 3 – 0, while Salisbury maintained their 4 – 2 – 0 record against TUC’s this season. This gave Salisbury the JSPR edge over Cushing.
Seeding teams with equal JSPR numbers:
You will notice that a number of teams are tied in the JSPR comparisons they have won. In the event of a tiebreaker, the winner of the tied teams’ JSPR comparisons gets the higher seed. Milton defeated Salisbury, Kent defeated KUA, and St. Sebastian’s bested Avon in their JSPR comparisons.
Last team out:
Currently Nobles is the last team in, while Lawrence is the last team out. Lawrence has won 7 JSPR comparisons, and will have plenty of opportunities to improve their chances to get in as they still have four games remaining against potential top 16 teams: Governor’s, Belmont Hill, St. Sebastian’s and St. Paul’s
RPI Notes:
After a full slate of games over the weekend, the RPI top 16 has seen very slight changes. South Kent has replaced St. Pauls as the 16th-ranked RPI team; additionally, there was some shuffling of teams within the top 16, with the biggest plunge taken by Dexter, falling from 9th to 14th.
Fifty-seven of the 63 NEPSIHA schools have reached the 15-game minimum to be eligible for playoff qualification. Three of those teams are one game below qualification. With that, we can say with near certainty that the following 20 teams are most likely to comprise the teams under consideration for the JSPR comparison. The teams are: Milton, Cushing, Salisbury, Lawrence, Nobles, KUA, St. Sebastian’s, Avon, Albany, Kent, Gunnery, Westminster, Governor, Dexter, Belmont Hill, South Kent, NMH, St. Paul’s Choate, and Pomfret.

Prep Schedule for Whalerfest
It’s in the low thirties and clear in East Hartford, Conn. this afternoon -- perfect weather for the Whalerfest’s slate of prep games today.
Tomorrow will be a little warmer, with a predicted high of 36 degrees and a 30 percent chance of snow.
There are some meaningful matchups with playoff implications – on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. The Westminster girls vs. the Choate girls tomorrow at 4:00 pm is a matchup of the #1 and #2 teams, respectively. Westminster is 11-0-0 in league play (16-1-0 overall) while Choate is 12-2-0 in league play (15-2-0 overall). The boys follow right after in what should be a good tilt. In the only previous meeting between the two schools this season, Westy traveled down to Choate on Dec. 8 and, trailing 4-3 in the third, struck for a pair of late third period goals to sneak away with a 5-4 win.
