Sat. Jan. 22 Highlights
Berkshire 5 @ Avon Old Farms 4 (OT) – Berkshire, after a rough December, has been picking it up since the holiday break and today cashed in with an OT road upset at #1 Avon Old Farms. The winning goal was scored by junior Brendan McGovern. Trevor Mingoia (1g,2a) had three points for the Bears, while Greg Gozzo had a pair of goals for Avon. Senior Mitch Gillam earned the win in net, kicking out 34 of 38.
@ St. Paul’s 3, Belmont Hill 2 (OT) – A goal by junior Josh Dickman at 4:49 of overtime lifted St. Paul’s past Belmont Hill. Senior goalie Derick Roy stopped 37 of 39 to earn the win for St. Paul’s. Belmont Hill junior Dave Cunningham stopped 34 of 37 in a losing cause. Belmont Hill is 1-3-1 over their last five.
St. Sebastian’s 6 @ Governor’s 3 – St. Seb’s went on the road and picked up their eighth win over their last nine. Juniors Joe Prescott (2g,1a) and Danny Regan (1g,2a) each picked up three points. Junior Brendan Burke (1g,1a) and senior D Desmond Bergin (2a) each had two points.
@ BB&N 5, Rivers 3 – Juniors Luke Griffin (1g,3a) and Matt Pugh (2g,1a) led the BB&N attack. Senior Sam Parker kicked out 21 shots for the win.
@ Middlesex 4, Groton 1 – Middlesex, behind senior goalie Zach Arnold (34/35), won their third straight. Middlesex got goals from four different scorers.
Taft 3 @ Canterbury 2 (OT) – Senior Mike Moran scored at 3:55 of OT to lift the Rhinos to the .500 mark with a road win at Canterbury. Junior Jimmy Harrison kicked out 24 of 26 for the win. Canterbury PG Scott Steele stopped 34 of 37 in a losing cause.
Milton 2 @ Kimball Union 2 – In a heavyweight battle up north, #3 Milton came back from a 2-0 deficit after the first period to earn a road tie against #5 Kimball Union. After juniors Dennis Kravchenko and Elie Vered scored in the first for KUA, Milton’s Sean Okita scored in the second, and senior George Pantazopolous tied it up with 3:04 left in regulation. Pat McNally assisted on both Milton goals. Senior Sean Dougherty kicked out 34 shots for the Mustangs, while senior Steve Mastalerz stopped 26 for the Wildcats.
Lawrence 5 @ Proctor 1 – Seniors Michael Jamieson (2g) and Andrew Cerretani (1g,1a) led the scoring for LA. Senior Jordan Nathan kicked out 23 of 24 shots for the win.
Hebron 3 @ Tilton 1 – Lumberjacks sophomore Guillaume Belanger-Therien stopped 40 of 41 shots to lead Hebron to a 3-1 win at Tilton.
Northfield Mt. Hermon 3, Lawrenceville 2 -- NMH scored three unanswered goals including two in the third period to squeeze past Lawrenceville 3-2 at Trinity College. Senior captain Real Huot had both goals for Lawrenceville in the loss.
South Kent 3, Kent’s Hill 1: South Kent beat Kent’s Hill 3-1 in a game played at Cushing Academy. Junior goaltender Nick Devine did all he could to keep Kent’s Hill in the game, stopping 43 of 46 shots.
Albany Academy 4 @ Pomfret 3: Junior Tyler Hynes’s second goal of the game gave Albany Academy an overtime win at Pomfret. Junior defenseman Jeff Taylor had a goal and two assists for Albany, winners of 11 of 12 since losing to Salisbury on Dec. 15th.
@ Salisbury 5, Kent 2: # 2 Kent dropped its fourth in a row, this time at the hands of #9 Salisbury. Junior John Knight had three points (1g, 2a) and classmate John Stevens had two goals to pace the Salisbury offense. The Knights seem to be rounding into form, having won five straight since starting 2011 with a disappointing loss to Deerfield.
@ Nobles 7, Andover 3: Nobles had no problem with Andover, coasting to a 7-3 home win. A hat trick by junior Stephen Miller led the way for the Bulldogs, who appear to be headed back in the right direction after some inconsistent play over break. The test will come on Wednesday when rival St. Sebastian’s comes down the street for a game with ISL and NEPSIHA implications.
@ Deerfield 4, Choate 3: Junior Kevin Roy’s overtime goal gave Deerfield a huge upset win over #4 Choate. The Wild Boars had come back to tie the game with two third period goals, the second being a powerplay strike by senior Kyle Criscuolo with just 31 seconds remaining. Choate, ranked #4 in the prep poll, finishes a tough week that also included a loss to Salisbury and a tie with Berkshire.
Westminster 3 @ Loomis-Chaffee 2: #10 Westminster managed to come out of Loomis with a win – but barely. Junior forward Chris Izmirlian tied the game with just over six minutes to go and then freshman Francesco Iannatuono got the winner with 59 seconds left in the extra session. Loomis senior goalie Steve Michalek (49 saves) kept his team in the game, as he does every game: he has not allowed more than four goals the entire season.
