Sat. Jan. 16 Highlights
-- Avon Hands #1 Kent Their First Loss
Avon, Conn. - Unranked Avon outhustled and outplayed previously undefeated Kent, skating off with a convincing 4-1 win here today in a performance that suggested there just might be one more player in the Founders' League race before all is said and done.
The pace to this game was fast, making it one of the better prep games we've seen this year. And it was Avon, which has excellent team speed, that dictated the tempo from start to finish.
Avon went up early, as senior Kevin Tiefenwerth snapped one from the slot at the 9:39 mark, beating Kent senior goaltender Matt Madrazo low stick side. Kent, however, came back several minutes later on the power play, with junior Drew Brown taking a nice pass from senior Dave Dupuis, and, from the corner of the crease, sweeping it past Avon goaltender Josh Dionne to tie the game at 1-1.
In the second, Avon took a 2-1 lead when junior forward George Welles, forechecking aggressively, stripped the puck from Kent defenseman Mark Higgins and tucked it past a surprised Madrazo at the 8:27 mark.
Avon went up 3-1 on a 5x3 power play when senior Quinn Smith converted a nice pass in the low slot from Colin Sullivan at 11:53 mark.
With the two-goal lead, Avon increased the pressure, and there was great up-and-down action for the remainder of the second. In the final couple of minutes, Avon was swarming all over Kent.
In the third, Avon didn't sit back. They took away space from Kent, using their speed to jump on guys as soon as they touched the puck, giving Kent no time to set up and get much in the way of quality shots.
Quinn Smith added his second goal of the day, an empty-netter, with 49 seconds remaining. For the record, the Tiefenwerth-Smith-Mike Pereira line figured in three of Avon's four goals. It may have been the best game we've seen Tiefenwerth play in his Avon career. Sophomore defenseman Colin Sullivan had a couple of assists for the Winged Beavers. Senior right shot defenseman Patrick MacGregor had a strong game throughout. And Dionne made the saves he had to make. Avon outshot Kent 34-24.
Afterwards, Kent coach Matt Herr said, "I thought it was a good hockey game. Big hits. Nice goals. It was a good game between two very good teams. We're a team that maybe needed something like this to keep our edge. I hope our guys take something from this game and regroup. Avon played very well, just great defensive hockey."
Avon head coach John Gardner said, "I thought we played well defensively. We didn't give up a lot of odd-man rushes. In the third period, we really limited their scoring opportunities. I think they only had six shots all period. I also thought we effectively used our speed to draw penalties. The word is that we're fast but soft. I think if they buy into the defensive end of things, they'll see good things happen. Hopefully, we can build on this win and realize what the recipe for winning hockey is."
Avon and Kent do not meet again in the regular season. They previously met on Dec. 18, in the Avon Christmas Classic. Kent won that one, 3-1.
