Taft vs. Avon: Breakfast at Fenway
The press box is closed, so we're outside. Fingers are frozen already, so please forgive typos. Our vantage point is the EMC Club over home plate -- but outdoors, not inside. It's pretty far from the ice -- the farthest from the ice this typist has been for any game since the Michigan-Michigan State outdoor game in East Lansing a few years back.

There is a small knot of people in the third base grandstand: everyone else is up in the luxury box area. Getting onto the field is about as easy as getting into a White House state dinner. We won't even try.

It's 9:15 and, after a lot of picture taking, it looks like we're ready to go.

Bo Redpath is in goal for Taft; Josh Dionne for Avon.

K.J. Tiefenwerth scores right off the bat for Avon,, tapping home a Pat MacGregor pass from in tight. They are not announcing goals and there's no game clock -- just a running time clock.

Taft just got it back on a rebound goal by, we believe, Derek Collins. It's 1-1 now, about seven minutes in.

They are playing (mostly bad) non-stop rock music all the time, not just during breaks in play. Strange, and irritating. Hansel's Messiah might be more appropriate to the season... if they insist on playing anything, that is.

John Jackson is in net for Avon now. Corbin McGuire almost immediately scores on a breakaway. 2-1 Taft.

Taft goes up 3-1 on a Kevin Spotts goal off a nice pass from Sean McGovern.

Avon makes it 3-2. Looked like the puck deflected in off the skate of a Taft d-man. Either Mimms or DeBello may get credit, though, to be honest, we're not sure if anyone is keeping stats here.

Aidan Cavallini just streaked down the right side, cut in front, got Jackson to go down, and buried it to make it 4-2 Taft.

The period is over and the ice is being now cleaned by a dozen men pushing snow shovels.Pretty cool.

By the way, no penalties have been called, and we kind of doubt one will be.

Second half:

Henri Pitkanen in net for Taft. Josh Hathaway in net for Avon.

Wind has picked up significantly, blowing left to right.

First penalty of game called -- to Taft's Thad Reycraft, for tripping. Avon's ensuing PP was unsuccessful.

Cam Hatch scores for Avon, cutting Taft's lead to 4-3.

Sean McGovern follows with a great goal, coming down the right side, deking the d-man, and burying his shot. 5-3, Taft.

Taft makes it 6-3 when d-man Thomas Freyre fires one home from the top of the right faceoff circle.

Matt Tetro builds Taft's lead to 7-3 on a wraparound goal.

A rebound goal by Avon's Michael Debello cuts it to 7-4 Taft.

Taft's McGuire scores his second of the game -- 8-4 Taft.

Avon's Tiefenwerth scores his second, tapping home the rebound of a Connor Doyle shot to cut Avon's lead to 8-5.

McGuire -- our #1 star of the game -- scores his third goal of the game with about five minutes of running time left to make it 9-5 Taft.

And that's it. These fingers are frozen solid. It was worth every second. It's great being in Fenway Park --- any time of the year.

Final score: Taft 9, Avon 5.
(The game, an exhibition, does not count in NEPSIHA standings.)

Notes:

Taft's retro unis, which head coach Danny Murphy adapted from a 1910 photograph he found in the school archives, looked great and will be raffled off to benefit the Cam Neely Foundation. Check the Taft web site's alumni page for more information. .

There were no faceoff circles, red line, or goal lines. Just faceoff dots, blue lines, and goal creases. We have a feeling that will change by Jan. 1.

As for the non-stop music, they did at least play "All Along the Watchtower" (Jimi Hendrix's version). And the Who's "Baba O'Reilly" certainly had appropriate lyrics.
