Freshman Leads Cushing Past Exeter
Ashburnham, Mass. - Freshman center Robbie Baillargeon (2g,2a) led Cushing to a hard-fought 5-4 win over Phillips Exeter here today.
Baillargeon, a 6'0" late '93 who played for Enfield (Conn.) High last winter, twice gave Cushing the lead, the second time for good. While he was a force, he was not the only standout forward the Penguins today. Senior Mike Conderman also had a big day with three points (1g,2a) -- it was the best game we've seen the Rochester, NY native play since arriving at Cushing. Actually, most forwards looked good for Cushing today, as, directly off the opening faceoff, they came at Exeter's star senior goaltender, Colgate recruit Max Fenkell, in waves.
Exeter senior James Shannon actually put Exeter on the board first, just 1:07 in, when he came down the left side with speed and found plenty of daylight between Cushing goaltender Marcus Calvanico and the near post. But Cushing center Jake Butler, a 6'2" junior from Cumming, Georgia, responded with a power play goal, converting a nice diagonal pass from junior Eric Chevrier on the point to tie it up at 1-1. At 10:22 of the first, Baillargeon finished off a great passing sequence down low with Conor Sheary and Conderman to put Cushing up 2-1. And that's how the first period ended. It was a dominant frame for the Penguins, as they held a 10-3 edge in shots, moved the puck well, and drove hard to the net.
In the second, Cushing kept up the pressure, with Conderman converted a pass from Baillargeon at the 4:08 mark to give Cushing a 3-1 lead. But within three minutes of Cushing getting that cushion, Exeter came right back and tied it, as first senior Tim Mitropoulos and then senior Josh Richards, on the power play, would bring Exeter back to a 3-3 tie heading into the second intermission.
Neither team was playing particularly well in their own end. At times, Cushing's d-men had a hard time handling the puck, and Exeter's defensemen were scrambling to keep step with the Cushing forwards, who were afforded a ton of space to drive to the net.
At 8:13 of the third period, with the score still tied at 3-3, 5'6" Cushing junior forward Nevin Lawlor drove to the net -- and right into Fenkell. It didn't seem egregious - it's something we see numerous times in a game. Normally, the goalie pops up, dusts himself off, and gets back to work. But Fenkell didn't like it at all this time, and took a punch at Lawlor. Exeter senior forward Peter Bessone jumped in and immediately he and Lawlor were down on the ice trading punches in front of the crease. The gloves never came off, but Bessone and Lawlor were given fighting majors and were tossed. Fenkell got a two-minute minor for roughing.
The minor was the difference. Fenkell's losing his cool cost his team because, on the ensuing power play, Baillargeon scored the game-winner, his second goal of the game, banging home a Brian Troy shot from the doorstep at the 9:30 mark.
Cushing, now smelling blood, scored again 38 seconds later, going up 5-3 when Connor Sheary snapped one home from the faceoff circle to Fenkell's left.
The final minutes became interesting when Exeter's top forward, Eric Neiley, converted a Josh Richards pass from behind the net to cut Cushing's lead to 5-4. That, however, was as close as Exeter would get, and they went down to their first defeat of the season.
Fenkell, from Meadowbrook, PA, has been Exeter's meal ticket for two years. Today, though, he was a little off his game.
Of course, the Cushing forwards played a role in that.
Exeter coach Dana Barbin said as much afterward. "Cushing," he said, "was a very determined and hungry team today. They played like they did not want to lose. They were an exceptionally determined group."
Cushing coach Rob Gagnon, whose team remains undefeated, was pleased with his team's effort. "I didn't envision us scoring five goals on Fenkell, but I did envision a one-goal game. For us, the key was staying out of the penalty box, which is something that's been killing us this season. I thought we only took one dumb penalty today. And I thought everyone stepped up in key situations."
"Our strategy tonight was to drive to the net through the middle of the ice, and we did that very well. You may have notice that Exeter's net was dislodged a number of times. By no means do I tell my kids to run a goalie but I do tell my kids to go the net hard and look were rebounds."
As for Baillargeon, who centers Conderman and Sheary, Gagnon said, "He sure didn't show his age tonight. He played with a lot of authority. He won the two faceoffs we drew up at the end of the game ... that's being mentally tough."
