Saturday Dec. 5 Highlights
Nobles Giveth; Bel Hill Taketh --
Belmont, Mass. - Nobles coughed up a 3-1 second period lead today, allowing Belmont Hill to score five straight goals and skate off a with a 6-3 win.
The score was tied at 1-1 early in the second when Belmont Hill senior center John Caldwell was assessed a major for a hit from behind. On the ensuing power play Nobles scored twice, on goals by junior Matt Harlow and 8th grader Brandon Shea. For Shea, a '95 from Marshfield, and the son of former BC forward Neil Shea, it was his first prep school goal.
And that was as good as it got for Nobles today. A couple of minutes later, Belmont Hill junior Alex DeBaere cut the Nobles lead to 3-2. And right after that, Stephan Brennan tied it at 3-3.
The winning goal came on a breakaway by sophomore Devin Albert, who finished off his dash by putting a move - a little dip of the shoulder -- on Nobles goalie Gene Lane, and tucking it up in the back of the net with 4:56 left in the second.
The period ended with Belmont Hill leading 4-3. In the third, senior Nick Tierney fed Brandon McNally, who was barreling down the slot. McNally fired it low stick side with 5:08 left.
Belmont Hill junior Mike McNamara added an empty-netter with 48 seconds left for the 6-3 margin of victory.
"Our young kids held together well," said Belmont Hill coach Ken Martin afterward. "Early on I thought they were a little bit in awe of the Hayes line, but they settled down. I thought everyone contributed. We moved the puck well. Our forwards were creative, especially in the second part of the game. I was pleased with our total team effort. And I was pleased with our goalie."
Nobles coach Brian Day said Belmont Hill played hard and well, but his team is still "searching for its identity."
"Our compete level has to be higher," he said. "We have to understand that to be successful there has to be personal sacrifice. When you're skating 5-on-5 you have to be willing to go to the dirty areas. To Belmont Hill's credit, they weren't going to give us that area. And we didn't force the issue."
Notes:
-- Nobles D Mike Reardon is out with mono.
-- There were a lot of good young players in this game. Belmont Hill has a slew of ‘93s - and Devin Albert, a soph with hands and quickness, was very good today. Belmont Hill's 5'9", 150 lb. '94-born defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who has already been offered by Boston University, showed his usual poise, plus he has the skills: a good stick, good head, and wheels. And for Nobles, we've already mentioned Shea, who has a great deal of upside. His goal today was a nice one, as he gathered up a puck that had rebounded to the side of the cage and found daylight on the short side - a goal scorer's goal.
Other Games Today:
-- A Brian Safstrom OT goal - his second goal of the game - lifted Andover to a 5-4 home win over Pomfret. It was the second straight OT loss for Pomfret.
-- Host Avon Old Farms topped Albany Academy, 6-3. Mike Pereira (3a), Paul Mimms (1g,2a) and Quinn Smith (2g) led the Winged Beavers attack.
-- Connor McBride (2g,1a) and Peter Michaildis (1g,2a) each had three points in Westminter’s 6-3 win at NMH.
-- Williston-Northampton senior goalie Bobby Bowden kicked out 64 of the 67 shots he faced, enabling his team to pick up a hard-earned 3-3 tie at Salisbury. A Max Edson third period goal saved Salisbury, which had a 2-0 lead after one but gave up three straight goals in the second, from defeat.
-- Junior defenseman Pat McNally had a hat trick – he has five goals in two games – and junior forward Doo Soo Kim had a goal and two assists as host Milton rolled over the visitors from St. Sebastian’s, 7-1.
-- Senior Nick Michaud had six goals in Berwick’s 7-2 win at Pingree.
-- New Berkshire goaltender Mitch Gillam shut out Taft, 3-0, on the road. Gillam had 30 saves.
-- BB&N topped Brooks on the road. Jack Bartlett (1g,3a) and Greg Tang (2g,1a) led the way for the Knights.
-- Erik Nilsson had a hat trick as host Gunnery topped Choate, 5-2.
