Flood-Marr Tournament -- Nobles Wins First Title Since '92

Sunday Playoffs @ Noble & Greenough:

8:00 am -- 7th Place: Deerfield 5, Westminster 3 -- Andrew Ammon (2g,1a) led the attack.

10:00 am -- 5th Place: Hotchkiss 3, Kimball Union 0 -- Petr Placek, Mike Borge, and George Russell were the scorers.

12:00 pm -- 3rd Place: Salisbury 5, Milton 1-- Salisbury breaks open a 1-1 game with four third-period goals. Three assists for Kyle Hughes. Andy Iles in net for Salisbury; Michael Baldino for Milton.

2:00 pm -- Championship: Nobles 5, Andover 3 -- Nobles, on an early third period goal by junior defenseman Gus Young, took a 4-3 lead en route to a 5-3 win over Phillips Andover in the finale of the 2008 Flood-Marr Tournament. The win gave Nobles its first Flood-Marr title since 1992, and it's second all-time.

Jared Lackey, with a pair of goals, came up big for Nobles; Chris Kreider had a pair for Andover.

This was a fun game to watch. Great tempo, some high end players to keep the level of play high, and several shifts of momentum. Nobles came out hard in the first period, and got on the board just 1:16 in, when Ian Graves took a feed out of the corner; his shot from the point was rebounded home by Billy Arnold. Nobles went up 2-0 at the 10:49 mark when Lackey converted a rebound. Then, less than three minutes after that, Andover took charge, with Kreider taking a short goal-mouth pass from linemate Brooks Dyroff and slipping it past goaltender Gene Lane to cut the Nobles' lead to one. Kreider struck again 57 seconds later on a wraparound, tying the game at 2-2 -- and that's where the period ended. In the second, Nobles struck for another early goal, taking a 3-2 lead when Lackey picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and took off, picking the top corner, and beating Andover goaltender Glenn Stowell cleanly. Andover got it right back 54 seconds later when Dyroff, off a face-off in the Nobles' end, spied a clear path to the net and, with no defender picking him up, bored in on Lane and tied the game back up, at 3-3. About a minute later, on a drive to the net, Arnold was taken down by big Andover defenseman Luke Duprey. Arnold was awarded a penalty shot, but Stowell stopped him with a glove save. Andover's Garnet Hathaway had a chance to put his team up 4-3 late, but rang one off the crossbar.

In third, as in the two periods preceding it, Nobles drew first blood when a Gus Young shot from the left point broke off Stowell's pad and into the net at the 2:26 mark. This time, though, Andover would be unable to answer. Instead, Nobles struck again, emphatically, when Nick Raffone, flying down the left side, snapped one top shelf to make it 5-3 at the 4:18 mark. This time Nobles wasn't going to give up their lead, and they didn't.

"In the third period," said Nobles head coach Brian Day, "we competed a lot harder than in the first two periods. The kids worked hard and never lost their composure. We have three real good lines and our third line came up with both goals in the third period. It was a total team win. Andover is a hell of a hcokey team. they work hard. It was an accomplishment for us to beat them."

12:00 pm -- 3rd Place: Belmont Hill 4, Lawrenceville 0 -- Four different goal scorers, plus a 30-save shutout from Mike Condon.

2:30 pm -- Championship: Taft 5, Choate 4 -- Great game. 3-3 after two periods. Choate goes up 4-3 on a Billy Rivellini goals 27 seconds into third. Then Robbie Bourdon ties it up for Taft, 4-4, at the 4:58 mark. Shortly after Bourdon, awarded a penalty shot, is stopped by Nick Bondurant. No matter, a minute or so later Bourdon knocked home a rebound to make it 5-4. Bourdon, who also scored in the second period, had a hat trick. E-L Hansen (1g,2a) and Jesse Root (3a) also had three points apiece for the Rhinos. Taft outshot Choate, 32-29.

St. Sebastian’s Tournament -- Winchendon Holds On; Take Title

Sunday Playoffs:

9:00 am -- 7th Place: South Kent 6, Rivers 2

11:00 am -- 5th Place: Thayer 3, Albany Academy 0

1:00 pm -- 3rd Place: Boston Advantage AAA 7, Proctor 4

3:00 pm -- 1st Place: Winchendon 5, St. Sebastian's 4 -- St. Seb's, down 4-1 in the second, came back  to make a game of it, but Winchendon held on for the win. Hugo Turcotte (1g,2a), Phil Arnone (1g,1a) and Adam Hercules (1g,1a) led the Winchendon attack. Brendan Corcoran, Joe McNamara, Dom Jancaterino, and Casey Cronin (on a penalty shot) scored the Arrows' goals. Shots were 33-33. Don McGuirl (St. Seb's) and Ben Meisner (Winchendon) manned the nets. Winchendon, up a goal, had to kill off a major over the last five minutes of the game. "That was the most important part of the game," said Winchendon head coach Patrick Leahy, adding, "This was a good overall team effort. We kept it loose, we had fun, and we played as a team."

--  The final day at both the Governor’s Tournament and the Brooks-Pingree Tournament was canceled because of the weather.

Friday Dec. 19 Update

Because of the snowstorm coming tomorrow afternoon, two schools, St. Mark's and Middlesex will be sending students home early, and thus their teams cannot play in the Harrington Tournament. With six teams remaining
and with the potential weather problems, there are schedule changes to report.

The tournament now consist of a six team round robin in which each team still plays three games, each against different opponents. Here is the revised schedule - please note that the Pomfret-Nobles game will be played at St. Sebastian's in order that all of tomorrow's games can be squeezed in before the storm hits.

-- Please note the revised schedule for the Odden Tournament.

-- Friday a.m. update: Thayer will not be traveling to the Howard Tournament at St. George's, so the two games involving them have been canceled. As of 9:30 am, all other games at George's are on schedule.

Please send any schedule changes and game results to information@ushr.com.

Welcome to the New Season

First off, let us say that we hope to see many more coaches taking advantage of this site this season than in years past! We'd love to have you on board, and to that end we’ve done everything possible to make it as user-friendly as possible. So, if you are a coach and would like to get your school’s information on the site, but don't know how to go about it, please email us at information (at) ushr.com and we’ll get you set up.

We have a large number of readers on the boy’s side. Among our subscribers are parents, players, fans, pro scouts, junior franchises, and just about every college that has an NCAA hockey program. A portion of the proceeds from the boys' side is used to keep the girls side going. It’s a little discouraging, though, to see one side going really well, and the other less so.

So let’s turn it around. Through USHR we can get the word out on the girls playing in New England prep schools, and also create a permanent record of the 2008-09 girls prep season, a digital keepsake players and their families can look back on in the years to come.

We really, really need coaches to upload their rosters/schedules/game results. We also need some volunteers who are not coaches. They can come from anywhere. Their primary assignment will be helping us keep the information up to date by making sure there are no missing results, and ensuring that the gaps in coverage are getting filled in. Anything beyond that is gravy.

Here are the schools that have uploaded their schedules thus far:

Brewster
Brooks
Canterbury
Exeter
Kingswood-Oxford
Millbrook
Milton
New Hampton
Noble & Greenough
North Yarmouth
Pomfret
Southfield
Thayer
Tilton

From the above schedules we have compiled a composite schedule covering the first week of play. Shortly after teams post their schedules, their games will start to appear on the weekly composite schedule.
