Sat. Dec. 13 Recaps

-- Belmont Hill Wins Fourth Straight

Leaving aside a season-opening shutout of Pingree, Belmont Hill has been outshot by a wide margin in their last three games, First, Nobles, then Governor’s, and, today, Lawrence Academy.

They’ve won all of the games. And they’ve taken more penalties than their opponents in all of those games.

The wins are nice, but, as Belmont Hill coach Ken Martin after the game, “It’s a bad pattern.”

For now, though, Belmont Hill is getting away with it, It helps that they have a standout goalie in senior Mike Condon, a Princeton recruit, who stopped 39 of 41 shots. While Condon had very few problems on the initial shot, there were a number of pretty nice rebounds out front, probably more than Condon would like to allow. Lawrence, however, had difficulty turning them into good scoring opportunites.

Lawrence broke out to a 1-0 first period lead when, on the power play, senior Logan Gillis converted the rebound of a Micah Williams point shot at the 8:21 mark.

Shortly afterward, it looked like Lawrence had taken a two-goal lead, but a Steven Whitney wraparound was waved off, as Condon had dislodged the post.

At the 9:57 mark, pinching Belmont Hill sophomore defenseman Dylan Pike took a nice pass from senior Ryan Walsh and snapped one off from the right faceoff circle, beating Lawrence sophomore goaltender Mac Haight, and tying the game at 1-1.

Early in the second, Whitney drove to the net and the puck slipped under Condon, crossing the goal line. It appeared to be a pretty clear goal but the referee, on the far side, lost sight of the puck, blew the whistle -- and Whitney again came up empty.

It remained a 1-1 game. Six minutes later, sophomore Connor Brickley made a nice short pass in center ice, springing sophomore linemate Brandon  McNally, sending him in alone on Haight. McNally, with a defender hanging on him, waited until Haight committed, then cashed in to give Belmont Hill a 2-1 lead at the 9:51 mark.

Lawrence kept getting power plays – they’d have three on the period, to Belmont Hill’s none – and kept firing away at Condon but coming up empty.

Belmont Hill made it 3-1 when Dawson Luke drifted down the right side into the Lawrence zone, and hit Will Gray with a nice pass goalmouth pass. Gray knocked it past Haight at the 13:26 mark.

Lawrence cut the lead to 3-2 when Luke turned it over on the blue line, and freshman Devin Tringale sent sophomore Zack Phillips in alone. Phillips ripped one from the slot – just  a great shot.

Less than a minute later, however, as the period wound down, Belmont Hill answered as McNally scored his second goal of the game, knocking home the rebound of a Luke point shot.

Lawrence outshot Belmont Hill in the second, 15-6, but went into the intermission trailing, 4-2.

In the third, Mike Blake scored an insurance goal, a back-door tally, putting Belmont Hill up 5-2.

Lawrence kept the pressure on, and outshot Lawrence 19-6 in the third, but had nothing to show for it.

“We have to get better at putting the puck into the net,” Lawrence coach Kevin Potter said afterward. “We just have to find a way to score goals.”

@ St. Mark’s 6, Brooks 5 (OT): A goal by senior David Murphy – his third of the game – lifted St. Mark’s to their first win since the ’06-07 season. After going 0-23-1 last season, St. Mark’s had started out this season with four straight losses. And today could have made it five. After busting out to a 4-1 lead, St. Mark’s, which hasn’t had much experience protecting a lead, allowed Brooks to come back and tie things up at 4-4. The teams then swapped goals seven seconds apart late in the third to send it to overtime. Murphy had quite the day for St. Mark’s, scoring a hat trick and figuring in five of his team’s six goals. Junior Scott MacDougall (2g,2a) and senior Chris Cyr (1g,3a) had days to remember as well. Actually, come to think of it, the whole St. Mark’s team did.

Northfield-Mount Hermon 3 @ Holderness 3: A lot of shots in this one – 101 in total – and not a lot of goals. Senior David Grilk (35/37) played two periods in the Holderness net, and junior Jeff Wasson (20/21) played one. For NMH, junior Branden Komm (40/43) went the distance.

Salisbury 5 @ Kent 2: Salisbury got goals from five different scorers, and junior Andy Iles kicked out 26 of 28 shots.

Groton 3 @ Rivers 2: Senior Jono Turchetta scored all three Groton goals, and junior Dale Adams kicked out 22 of 24 shots.

@ South Kent 6, Berkshire 1: PG Jim Fuorili (2g,1a), senior David Benmocha (1g,2a), and junior Mike Pereira (1g,2a) led the Cardinal attack. Sophomore goaltender Sam Locke stopped 28 of 29 shots for the win.

@ Gunnery 5, Williston 2: Junior Thane Heller (2g) led the attack. Gunnery outshot Williston, 55-10.

@ St. Sebastian’s 5, BB&N 2: Senior Chris Brown figured in three of St. Seb’s five goals, the last an empty-netter. The Arrows outshot BB&N, 53-19.

@ Proctor 4, Thayer 2: Junior Keith Buehler (2g,1a) led the Hornets’ attack, and senior Conor Systrom stopped 25 of 27 shots to pick up the win as Proctor remains undefeated. Sophomore Charlie Coyle (1g,1a) figured in both of Thayer’s goals.

@ Milton 3, Governor’s 2: Despite being outshot by a better than 2-1 margin, Milton Academy, on a third period goal by senior Kyle Hunchberger, edged Governor’s. Senior Thomas Tysowsky kicked out 38 of 40 shots for the win. The Mustangs move to 4-0-0.

@ Choate 4, Deerfield 3 (OT): Choate came back from a 3-1 deficit with an Adam Patel goal at 8:59 of the second and a Joel Goodsell tally 13 seconds into the third. Senior Mark Goggin won it in OT, his second OT goal in three games.

@ Hebron 5, Portsmouth Abbey 0: PG Matt Siracusa (2g,1a) and senior Chad Goodwin (1g,2a) led the attack as the Lumberjacks go to 4-0-0 on the young season. In net, PG Trevor White stopped all 16 shots he faced.

St. George’s 5 @ Pingee 2: Junior Mike Violette (3g.1a) figured in four of his team’s five goals, the last of them an empty-netter.

Tabor 2 @ St. Paul’s 2: SPS senior T.J. Bowse had 24 saves and Tabor junior Robert Kang had 28.

Vermont Academy 4 @ Kingswood-Oxford 0: Vermont Academy got goals from four different scorers and senior Austin Erney stopped all 11 shots he faced. K-O senior goaltender Andrew Boyce stopped 44 of 48 shots in a losing effortr.

@ Kimball Union 5, Tilton 3: KUA went up 4-0 but Tilton came back with three to make it a one-goal game before KUA PG Andrew Murmes sealed it with an empty-netter. Murmes had three points (2g,1a) on the day.

@ Worcester Academy 2, New Hampton 1: Senior Nico Candelmo had 36 saves for the Hilltoppers.

POSTPONED:

Cushing @ Exeter:
This game, scheduled for today, was postponed due to the ice storm, which has left nearly a million New England homes and businesses without power. It will be made up on Monday (Dec. 15) at 5:00 pm.

And Winchendon, due to the ice storm, bowed out of this weekend's Albany Academy Tournament. Only one of their scheduled games in the tournament, the opener against Albany Academy, a league game, will be made up.

Friday Dec. 19 Update

Because of the snowstorm coming tomorrow afternoon, two schools, St. Mark's and Middlesex will be sending students home early, and thus their teams cannot play in the Harrington Tournament. With six teams remaining
and with the potential weather problems, there are schedule changes to report.

The tournament now consist of a six team round robin in which each team still plays three games, each against different opponents. Here is the revised schedule - please note that the Pomfret-Nobles game will be played at St. Sebastian's in order that all of tomorrow's games can be squeezed in before the storm hits.

-- Please note the revised schedule for the Odden Tournament.

-- Friday a.m. update: Thayer will not be traveling to the Howard Tournament at St. George's, so the two games involving them have been canceled. As of 9:30 am, all other games at George's are on schedule.

Please send any schedule changes and game results to information@ushr.com.

Welcome to the New Season

First off, let us say that we hope to see many more coaches taking advantage of this site this season than in years past! We'd love to have you on board, and to that end we’ve done everything possible to make it as user-friendly as possible. So, if you are a coach and would like to get your school’s information on the site, but don't know how to go about it, please email us at information (at) ushr.com and we’ll get you set up.

We have a large number of readers on the boy’s side. Among our subscribers are parents, players, fans, pro scouts, junior franchises, and just about every college that has an NCAA hockey program. A portion of the proceeds from the boys' side is used to keep the girls side going. It’s a little discouraging, though, to see one side going really well, and the other less so.

So let’s turn it around. Through USHR we can get the word out on the girls playing in New England prep schools, and also create a permanent record of the 2008-09 girls prep season, a digital keepsake players and their families can look back on in the years to come.

We really, really need coaches to upload their rosters/schedules/game results. We also need some volunteers who are not coaches. They can come from anywhere. Their primary assignment will be helping us keep the information up to date by making sure there are no missing results, and ensuring that the gaps in coverage are getting filled in. Anything beyond that is gravy.

Here are the schools that have uploaded their schedules thus far:

Brewster
Brooks
Canterbury
Exeter
Kingswood-Oxford
Millbrook
Milton
New Hampton
Noble & Greenough
