Wed. Dec. 10 Recaps

-- Blake, Condon Lead Belmont Hill Past Governor’s, 4-1

In a Keller Division matchup at Byfield, Mass. this afternoon, senior forward Mike Blake (2g,2a) figured in all of his team’s goals as visiting Belmont Hill knocked off Governor’s Academy, 4-1.

Seniors Will Gray (1g,2a), and Jack McNamara (1g,1a) also had big days. And in net Mike Condon kicked out 33 of 34 shots for the win. Senior Dom Malerba stopped 16 of 19 in the Governor’s net.

This was a funny game, in the sense that there were a good number of penalties -- a total of 18 were called (10 called against Bel Hill, and eight against Governor’s) -- that kept the game from developing any real flow. And, although Governor’s outshot Belmont Hill by 34-19, it didn’t really feel that Condon or the Belmont Hill defense was under significant pressure.

In the first period, Belmont Hill went up, 1-0, when, on the power play, Gray cashed in on a back door goal at the 11:03 mark.

In the second, Governor’s tied it up on a shorthanded goal, as sophomore Jack Ceglarski, coming down the slot, took a nice pass from Tim Winslow and snapped one off, beating Condon top corner, glove side, at the 4:55 mark.

Less than four minutes later, Belmont Hill scored what would turn out to be the game-winner when Jack McNamara, along the goal line to Malerba’s right, shot one off the back of Malerba’s right leg, at knee level, and into the net for a 2-1 lead. That’s where things stood after two.

In the third, Belmont Hill scored a nice goal when senior defenseman Ugo Dibiase, at the left point, held the puck nicely and then put a low shot on the net, which Blake was able to deflect past Malerba, giving his team a 3-1 lead 2:55 into the period.

Blake added an empty-netter with 59 seconds left.

Governor’s is only going with three defenseman this year. And, with sophomore Reed Kennedy hurt, they are utilizing just two – senior Jeff Menard and sophomore Drew Tallett (the brother of Harvard defenseman Ian Tallett). Governor’s uses two men up front and three back, in the manner of Middlebury coach Bill Beaney.

“I think our defense did a really good job keeping the shots to the outside – Governor’s attacked with speed – and (Condon) came up big,” said Belmont Hill head coach Ken Martin.

”We’re generating offense but not a sustained offense,” said Governor’s head coach Peter Kravchuk. “Part of that was Condon and part was not getting good shots and good rebounds and going to the net.”

Friday Dec. 19 Update

Because of the snowstorm coming tomorrow afternoon, two schools, St. Mark's and Middlesex will be sending students home early, and thus their teams cannot play in the Harrington Tournament. With six teams remaining
and with the potential weather problems, there are schedule changes to report.

The tournament now consist of a six team round robin in which each team still plays three games, each against different opponents. Here is the revised schedule - please note that the Pomfret-Nobles game will be played at St. Sebastian's in order that all of tomorrow's games can be squeezed in before the storm hits.

-- Please note the revised schedule for the Odden Tournament.

Welcome to the New Season

First off, let us say that we hope to see many more coaches taking advantage of this site this season than in years past! We'd love to have you on board, and to that end we’ve done everything possible to make it as user-friendly as possible. So, if you are a coach and would like to get your school’s information on the site, but don't know how to go about it, please email us at information (at) ushr.com and we’ll get you set up.

We have a large number of readers on the boy’s side. Among our subscribers are parents, players, fans, pro scouts, junior franchises, and just about every college that has an NCAA hockey program. A portion of the proceeds from the boys' side is used to keep the girls side going. It’s a little discouraging, though, to see one side going really well, and the other less so.

So let’s turn it around. Through USHR we can get the word out on the girls playing in New England prep schools, and also create a permanent record of the 2008-09 girls prep season, a digital keepsake players and their families can look back on in the years to come.

We really, really need coaches to upload their rosters/schedules/game results. We also need some volunteers who are not coaches. They can come from anywhere. Their primary assignment will be helping us keep the information up to date by making sure there are no missing results, and ensuring that the gaps in coverage are getting filled in. Anything beyond that is gravy.

Here are the schools that have uploaded their schedules thus far:

Brewster
Brooks
Canterbury
Exeter
Kingswood-Oxford
Millbrook
Milton
New Hampton
Noble & Greenough
North Yarmouth
Pomfret
Southfield
Thayer
