Daily Double

A pair of former prep defensemen from the class of '02 -- Deerfield's Ben Lovejoy and Taft's Jaime Sifers -- made their NHL debuts last night.

Lovejoy, an '84 who graduated from Deerfield and Dartmouth, was called up by the Pittsburgh Penguins from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) and played 10 plus minutes in a 4-3 Pittsburgh loss to Buffalo. Lovejoy, who is 6'2", 214 lbs. now, was undrafted and signed as a free agent. He's the older brother of current Deerfield defenseman Nick Lovejoy, a junior and a Dartmouth recruit; and former Deerfield defenseman Matt Lovejoy, who is playing lacrosse at Virginia. The boys' dad, Carl, played college hockey at Colby, and their mother, Cari, was an excellent lacrosse player in college. In sum, a ridiculously athletic family.

Sifers, an '83 who graduated from Taft and Vermont, was called up by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the Toronto Marlies (AHL) and played 17 minutes in a 4-2 Maple Leafts home win over the New York Islanders. Like Lovejoy, Sifers, who is now 5'11", 205 lbs., was undrafted and signed as a free agent. His sister, Jennifer Sifers, was a forward for the Harvard women. Another talented athletic family.

We missed this one, but a reader just brought it to our attention. Former Taft (class of '03) and Boston University goaltender John Curry made his NHL debut for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov. 26, Thanksgiving eve. Curry, who had been brought up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) came on in relief after Dany Sabourin gave up a goal that put the Pens, playing the NY Islanders on the road, down 3-0. With Curry in net, Pittsburgh came back with a vengeance, scoring five straight goals for a 5-3 win. ''I didn't have time to think. All I could do was just go in and play,'' said Curry, a 5'11" Shorewood, Minn. native. ''Believe me, it was very nerve-racking.'' Two nights later, Curry got the start at Buffalo, and stopped 28 of 32 shots in a 4-3 loss. After that, Marc-Andre Fleury returned to action. In his two NHL games to date, Curry has a 2.67 gaa and a .907 save percentage.

***

Several nights later, on Nov. 29, former Phillips Andover and Boston College goaltender Cory Schneider, who saw plenty of Curry from the opposite end of the ice during his college years, made his NHL debut. Schneider, an '86 from Marblehead, Mass., has played five straight games filling in for Roberto Luongo, who is out with a groin pull. In those games, the 6'2" Schneider has a .896 save percentage and a 2.80 gaa. Prior to being called up, Schneider, Vancouver's first round draft pick in '04, had played 11 games for Manitoba (AHL), posting a .945 save percentage and a 1.37 gaa. Not bad at all.

***

This doesn't quite count as an NHL debut, since he was called up for one game late last season, but former Phillips Exeter and Harvard forward Tom Cavanagh was called up to the San Jose Sharks from Worcester (AHL) last week. Cavanagh, a sixth round draft pick of the Sharks in '01, has played one game with the Sharks since his recall. An '82 from Warwick, RI, Cavanagh played at Toll Gate High before taking a PG year at Exeter. He's from a ridiculously athletic family, too -- funny how these things work. His father, Joe Cavanagh, was one of the best forwards at Harvard -- ever. Just a great player. Trust us, we saw him play. Problem was, not many Americans even got a sniff from the NHL in the late 60's and early '70s.

Friday Dec. 19 Update

Because of the snowstorm coming tomorrow afternoon, two schools, St. Mark's and Middlesex will be sending students home early, and thus their teams cannot play in the Harrington Tournament. With six teams remaining
and with the potential weather problems, there are schedule changes to report.

The tournament now consist of a six team round robin in which each team still plays three games, each against different opponents. Here is the revised schedule - please note that the Pomfret-Nobles game will be played at St. Sebastian's in order that all of tomorrow's games can be squeezed in before the storm hits.

-- Please note the revised schedule for the Odden Tournament.

-- Friday a.m. update: Thayer will not be traveling to the Howard Tournament at St. George's, so the two games involving them have been canceled. As of 9:30 am, all other games at George's are on schedule.

Please send any schedule changes and game results to information@ushr.com.

Welcome to the New Season

First off, let us say that we hope to see many more coaches taking advantage of this site this season than in years past! We'd love to have you on board, and to that end we’ve done everything possible to make it as user-friendly as possible. So, if you are a coach and would like to get your school’s information on the site, but don't know how to go about it, please email us at information (at) ushr.com and we’ll get you set up.

We have a large number of readers on the boy’s side. Among our subscribers are parents, players, fans, pro scouts, junior franchises, and just about every college that has an NCAA hockey program. A portion of the proceeds from the boys' side is used to keep the girls side going. It’s a little discouraging, though, to see one side going really well, and the other less so.

So let’s turn it around. Through USHR we can get the word out on the girls playing in New England prep schools, and also create a permanent record of the 2008-09 girls prep season, a digital keepsake players and their families can look back on in the years to come.

We really, really need coaches to upload their rosters/schedules/game results. We also need some volunteers who are not coaches. They can come from anywhere. Their primary assignment will be helping us keep the information up to date by making sure there are no missing results, and ensuring that the gaps in coverage are getting filled in. Anything beyond that is gravy.

Here are the schools that have uploaded their schedules thus far:

Brewster
Brooks
Canterbury
Exeter
Kingswood-Oxford
Millbrook
Milton
New Hampton
Noble & Greenough
North Yarmouth
Pomfret
Southfield
Thayer
Tilton
Winchendon

Here are the schools that have uploaded their rosters:

Kents Hill
Kingswood-Oxford
Millbrook
Milton
NAHA White Team
New Hampton
Noble & Greenough
North Yarmouth

Trinity College School
Winchendon

From the above schedules we have compiled a composite schedule covering the first week of play. Shortly after teams post their schedules, their games will start to appear on the weekly composite schedule.

The pay is not great (surprise!) but the job could be a rewarding one as the girls on the team are great, fun kids. Please call 617-480-1755 or email information (at) ushr.com   Thank you.
