2/28/08 Update 1:15 pm -- The game will be at Tilton. Official NEPSIHA statement is below.
Roxbury Latin-New Hampton Div. II Semi Moved
Roxbury Latin, due to the fact that some of the juniors on the team who had been participating in an SAT prep course were scheduled to take the actual exam this Saturday morning, has asked to be excused from Saturday’s 11:00 am Div. II semifinal contest in Salem, NH.
But they haven’t asked to be excused from the tournament.
Instead, in a first for the NEPSIHA tournament, Roxbury Latin’s athletic director has asked NEPSIHA president John Gardner for special accommodations. Gardner, after conferring with the NEPSIHA board, arranged for them to play at 4:00 pm that afternoon at a site to be determined, either Phillips Exeter or Tilton. It’s not like the NEPSIHA board had a choice really. They weren’t thrilled with the way the tournament has now been broken up, but what were they going to do? Roxbury Latin announced they wouldn’t be playing in a morning game, and that was that.
For the New Hampton kids, we would think this provides major motivation. They went to bed last night believing they’d be playing on the big sheet in Salem, in front of a large contingent of NHL scouts and college recruiters… and now have learned they will be playing in front of friends and family. That’s a tough one to swallow.
Forgive the aside, but when this typist took the SATs in the ‘70s, none of us took prep courses. And we only took the test once, in the fall of our senior year. We just got a good night’s sleep, ate a good breakfast, sharpened our pencils and went in and took the test cold. Seemed to work fine. This is personal opinion, but, in the decades since, the whole testing industry has run amok. It stresses out kids, who expend far more energy and time on test prep courses than is healthy. It stresses out parents, who spend far too much money on the courses. The colleges should just step up and rein the industry in. It would be a plus for everyone, except the CEO and stockholders at Princeton Review, Kaplan, et al. Right now, the tail is wagging the dog.
At any rate, getting back of the soapbox and back to the immediate matter at hand, we will let you know when the venue has been confirmed.

1:15 pm Update: NEPSIHA Release:
Due to a SAT scheduling commitment, the New Hampton-Roxbury Latin Division 2 Semifinal game has been changed to a 4 PM game at Tilton School on Saturday March 1 rather than 11:00 AM at the Icenter in Salem NH.
Please know that this change is unusual, but the NEPSIHA Executive Committee thought that it was the best possible solution to the problem.
