2/20/08 Borelli Blanks Bearcats
Salisbury, Conn. – Salisbury senior goaltender Anthony Borelli stopped 32 shots to lead his team to a 2-0 win over Hotchkiss here this afternoon.
This was a game that had playoff implications for both teams, and Hotchkiss came out fired up, and took it to Salisbury, playing hard, playing physically, and outshooting their hosts. At the end of the period, Hotchkiss had nearly four straight minutes on the power play, as well as a brief spell of a 5x3, but still had nothing to show for it.
Instead, it was Salisbury that scored the period’s only goal when Shawn Manning chipped it out to Jeff Back, who in turn made a nice pass to Adam Pawlick who skated in on Hotchkiss goaltender John Yanchek, picking the top corner at the 12:55 mark. It was Salisbury’s first or second shot of the period.
Hotchkiss continued to work hard in the second, but again had nothing to show for it, as the Salisbury team defense kept odd-man rushes to a minimum. The period’s only goal came when Jack Clayman fired a wide-angle shot from just off the wall near the hash marks. It appeared to beat Yanchek short side. The goal came at the 5:57 mark.
In the third, Hotchkiss continued to work and try to get back in the game, but didn’t have the energy they had in the first two periods. For the game, Hotchkiss outshot Salisbury 32-27, and also had the edge in territory. However, Hotchkiss didn’t move the puck as crisply on the PP as their hosts did, nor do they have the snipers Salisbury has. As for Hotchkiss, Yanchek had a solid game. The Pawlick goal was just a terrific shot. The Clayman goal he’d probably want back.
”I thought we competed hard,” Hotchkiss coach Damon White said afterward. “They had two shots in the first, one of which went in. We got tired in the third, as our top two lines were worn out. Salisbury played a very good game, but I was very pleased with our effort. Our kids played hard, and they played hurt -- Derek DeBlois hurt his shoulder early in the first and played the whole game in pain. The game was kind of a microcosm of the season – we can’t score goals.”
Salisbury head coach Matt Corkery said, “We had a really good goalie. Hotchkiss was all over us early and brought a lot of energy. But Anthony (Borelli) was the difference, both early and then when we had those penalties to kill later. He was our best penalty killer. He just did a great job.”
Notes:
Salisbury defenseman Brandon Russo missed the game due to a deep bone bruise and is day-to-day. Zach Martin missed the game for Hotchkiss. He’s out for the season.
