Andover Strikes Late, Ties up GDA

Andover, Mass. – With a 4-2 lead and a tick over three minutes remaining on the clock, it looked like Governor’s Academy was going to sneak out of town with a hard-earned road win under their belt.

But, suddenly, a puck flung on net by senior Andrew Cox deflected off GDA defenseman Zach Menard’s stick and by junior goaltender Dom Malerba to make it a 4-3 game at 14:59 of the third.

A little over a minute later, Andover senior forward J.J. McGregor came barreling hard down the right side and fanned on his first pass attempt but on take two was able to get it across the crease to Cox, who was stationed at the far post. Suddenly, to the delight of the Andover partisans, which included New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, it was a 4-4 game.

The goal was the third of the game for Cox, a Holy Cross recruit from Lombardy, Ontario.

But despite dominating overtime, that was all Andover would get, and they should probably consider themselves fortunate because for much of the game, GDA had their number.

“I thought we played well for 57 minutes tonight,” said Governor’s head coach Peter Kravchuk, “and we had a couple of minutes where we let it slip away. In the last couple minutes of the third we were running around a bit. We have a young team, though, and hopefully the next time we’re in this situation we’ll figure out a way to pull it out. The fact that they’re upset with this is a good thing.”

Dean Boylan, Andover’s head coach, said, “They badly outplayed us, certainly in the first and for a major part of the second. We had to really find a way to dig in in the third.”

The first period, in which Governor’s outshot Andover 13-5 and led on the scoreboard 3-2, was a frenetic affair. Cox put Andover up 1-0 just 2:19 in. Fifty seconds later, GDA senior center Michael Hill dug a puck out of the corner and got it out front to sophomore Tim Winslow, who made it 1-1. GDA went up 2-1 at the 7:57 mark when Zach Menard converted a nice pass from Will Bryson. But three minutes later, Andover’s star sophomore Chris Kreider banged home a rebound while the two sides were playing 4x4 hockey. Finally, with 1:42 left in the period, GDA defenseman Jeff Menard – for the record, there are three Menards on the team – got the puck to sophomore center Cody Ferriero, who ripped off a blast that beat Andover goalie Glenn Stowell high glove side to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

For a long time, it looked like that goal would be the game winner. And it looked like Josh Adinolfo’s goal at 2:11 of the third period, a little knuckler off a pass from Hill, was just an insurance goal. Well, that goal turned out to be pretty valuable in the end.

Notes:

-- This game was not much to speak of artistically. It was more of a ragged, hard-fought affair. Governor’s did a great job in their own end, particularly for the first couple of periods. To be specific, they gave the Andover players very little time and space, hounding them continuously and making it impossible for their hosts to set up and make plays. Governor’s hustled and almost pulled off a minor upset.

Andover came back and, with a strong third period and overtime, wound up outshooting Governor’s by a 27-24 margin.

-- Midway through the first period, Andover’s McGregor was hooked down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Malerba, however, came out and stopped him before he could get a shot off.

-- The officiating was strange in this game. The refs just weren’t on the ball at all, a problem we’ve seen quite a bit of this season.
