Belmont Hill Too Much for Nobles
Belmont, Mass. -- With a chance to strengthen their playoff position, Noble & Greenough instead squandered it, getting outworked, outhustled, outshot and soundly beaten, bowing 5-2 to Belmont Hill here today.
Belmont Hill came out strong and got on the board early when the Jack MacNamara – Jason Silvia – Jake Moscatel line applied early pressure. It paid off when MacNamara curled out from behind the net and took a shot that Nobles goalie John Muse made the initial stop on. The rebound came to Silvia who snapped it past Muse to make it 1-0. It was a soft goal, but it came off hard work.
The Silvia line would strike again at the 6:21 mark. This time, Silvia beat the D to the puck in the near corner and made a nice pass out in front to Moscatel who flipped it over Muse and into the top of the cage to give Belmont Hill a 2-0 lead.
It looked like Belmont Hill was going to steamroller Nobles, but then the visitors went on the power play with about five minutes left in the period, cashing in when Andrew Glass came down the right side and, from out by the faceoff circle, took a shot that Josh Franklin either got on a rebound or deflected home at the 13:46 mark.
Just 1:31 later, Nobles struck again as Derek Pallis, from the left point, took a low, hard shot on net that deflected off the stick of Glass and zipped over the glove hand of Belmont Hill goalie Matt Gedman to tie the game at 2-2. It was the last goal Gedman would allow.
With less than two minutes left, Belmont Hill almost went ahead when Muse came out to play the puck, but mishandled it, enabling a Belmont Hill player to take a shot that a Nobles skater had to scoot into the crease to block. By the time Muse scrambled back to the net everyone was tangled up with everyone else; a lot of pushing and shoving ensued. Muse stayed down on the ice for a few minutes, but eventually got to his feet and stayed in the game.
As a result of the scrum, five penalties were called, three on Nobles, two on Belmont Hill.
Just 27 seconds into the ensuing power play, Kevin MacNamara, from the right point, hit Matt McCollem with a pass. McCollem got it to Mark Dube, who fired it past Muse to give Nobles a 3-2 lead with 1:28 left in the period.
The second period was downright placid. Both teams skated hard, and the period was fairly even. Gedman, who had a strong game, came up with a couple of big saves to keep Nobles from tying the game up.
In the third, though, Belmont Hill just poured it on, particularly from about the five minute mark onward, scoring two more goals.
Dube made it 4-2, scoring his second goal of the day at the 8:53 mark, with assists going to Kevin MacNamara and McCollem.
With 2:52 left in the period and Belmont Hill on the power play due to a dubious tripping call against Josh Franklin, a shot wide of Muse was taken off the end boards by Trip Wray, whose attempt to ice the puck was picked off by Silvia, who fired it past a startled Muse.
Shots on goal in the third were Belmont Hill 17, Nobles 4. Shots for the game were Belmont Hill 44, Nobles 25.
“In the first,” said Belmont Hill coach Ken Martin, “the Silvia line played great and got a couple goals off hard work and quick sticks. Then we went to the penalty box. That hurt us. Nobles got momentum and scored twice.”
“In the second, it was just good skating, both ways.”
“In the third, I thought we had a little more jump and shut them down defensively. I was pleased with our overall team defense.”
Nobles coach Brian Day said, “They were just a better hockey team than we were tonight.”
“We were in the game coming in the third period and they just had more energy than we did. They won more loose pucks and carried the play.”

2/27/07 Update 2/28 11:30 am -- We have all games covered except for one: Kingswood-Oxford @ Rivers. We still need a volunteer to phone or email updates from that game.
Calling All Blackberries, Treos – and Plain Old Cell Phones
For this year’s quarterfinals, we are going to do what we have done for past two seasons, and post updates at the end of every period of every game, both Div. I and Div. II, both boys and girls.
We’re looking for volunteers to either text or phone in scores at the end of each period and, if possible, include goal scorers. This worked really well last year and, in pretty close to real time, we were able to bring updates to people across the country and around the globe.
If you’re willing to help out, please email cwarner@ushr.com and let us know which game you will be attending. We'll send you back the info you need.
With your help, we can pull this project off again. It should be fun.
