Power Plays Boost Avon Past Deerfield
Avon, Connecticut – Avon Old Farms, currently ranked #2, topped Deerfield here today 4-1 in front of a packed house at Avon’s Fairchild-Jennings Rink.
The winning tally, which came at the 12:21 mark of the second period, was of the blue collar varieties, with sophomore defenseman Lee Moffie finishing some excellent Avon pressure with a one-timer off a feed from forward Nick Bonino. Deerfield goalie Michael Dizgun, who stood on his head more than once this afternoon, appeared to make the first three saves during this barrage, but couldn’t grab the handle on Moffie’s shot. The goal came during a 4-on-4 situation.
Deerfield, winner of their last seven games but without forward Tommy Herd and defenseman Matt Lovejoy for this afternoon’s tilt, came out skating well in the first period, keeping Avon in their own zone for long stretches at a time. Although Deerfield held both territory and puck-control advantages throughout much of the first period, it was Avon’s speed and transition game that kept the fans on their feet. Deerfield’s Dizgun stoned both Nick Bonino and Patrick Mullane within a minute of each other, both on partial breakaways, to keep the score at 0-0. But luck ran out for the Big Green at the 12:44 mark of the first period when defenseman Brian Malchoff, circling counter-clockwise down the center of the slot, took a pass from Ken Trentowski, made one quick deke, and slid the puck past a sprawled Dizgun to give the Winged Beavers the first goal of the game, a power play goal, and the 1-0 lead.
Deerfield would answer back with a power-play goal of their own just over three minutes into the second period. Matthew Rhone, a PG forward from Dedham, Mass., fed Alexander Killorn from behind the Avon net. Killorn, positioned just inside the left face-off circle, took one step and snapped a bullet to the short side past Avon goalie Randy Wolcott.
Avon added two goals in the third period, by Chris Wieland and Tom Atkinson, to seal the victory.
“We aren’t there yet,” said Avon head coach John Gardner after the game. “We’re competing, and we’re getting better, but we aren’t there yet.”
“Avon is a very good team and I’m proud of our boys and their effort today,” said Brendan Creagh, Deerfield’s head coach. “A bounce here and a bounce there, and it could have been a different game. We’ll bounce back.”

2/27/07 Update 2/28 11:30 am -- We have all games covered except for one: Kingswood-Oxford @ Rivers. We still need a volunteer to phone or email updates from that game.
Calling All Blackberries, Treos – and Plain Old Cell Phones
For this year’s quarterfinals, we are going to do what we have done for past two seasons, and post updates at the end of every period of every game, both Div. I and Div. II, both boys and girls.
We’re looking for volunteers to either text or phone in scores at the end of each period and, if possible, include goal scorers. This worked really well last year and, in pretty close to real time, we were able to bring updates to people across the country and around the globe.
If you’re willing to help out, please email cwarner@ushr.com and let us know which game you will be attending. We'll send you back the info you need.
With your help, we can pull this project off again. It should be fun.
