Penguins Rise From the Dead

Wellesley, Mass. –  #5-ranked Cushing Academy, trailing 3-2 to Thayer after two lackluster periods and staring down the barrel at a potential third straight loss, came out and played a dominant third period, scoring four straight goals to give themselves a 6-3 win in the annual Babson College hosted Thayer-Cushing game.

The tying goal came just 37 seconds into the third, when junior LW Broc Little took a pass from senior Tom Bardis and broke down the outside and beat Thayer goalie Matt Frechette to the short side one to make it 3-3.

The winning goal came 4:06 into the period as senior center Damen Nisula converted a nice pass from senior Ryan Duff to put Cushing up, 4-3.

With 9:29 remaining, Nisula broke in on a nice 2-on-1 with senior John Frey, who set up Nisula on the side of the crease for a bang-bang to put the Penguins up up, 5-3.

With 2:59 remaining, junior center Brad Malone went to the net hard and converted a pass out from the corner to make it 6-3 Cushing.

Thayer, down by three, pulled Frechette, to no avail. Cushing actually hit a post, nearly making it 7-3.

How did Cushing get in a hole to begin with? Well, a 5-on-3 given to Thayer in the first period resulted in a pair of goals, both by Thayer senior forward Greg Malley, one from a scrum in front and one from a deflection. Ryan Driscoll picked up assists on both goals.

Cushing cut it to 2-1 with 3:11 left in the first when defenseman Charlie Zieserl took a shot from the left point that broke off Frechette’s left pad, and Frey tapped it over the line.

In the second period, Thayer came back with a goal to make it 3-1 when junior defenseman Austin Collins took a shot from the point that rebounded a good 5-10 feet off the pads of Cushing goaltender Richard Bachman. Thayer sophomore forward Peter Oswald jumped on the rebound to put the Tigers up, 3-1 at the 5:45 mark.

But that was it for Thayer -- Bachman would shut them down for the next 30 plus minutes.

Cushing’s comeback started – technically, anyway -- with 5:48 left in the second when freshman defenseman Dave Warsofsky took a pass from Duff and fired a low, accurate shot that beat Frechette stick side to cut the Thayer lead to one.

In the third, as we mentioned, Cushing came to life in a big way, scoring four more goals to put away Thayer.

Note: Thayer forward Brian Gibbons did not play in today’s game, but is expected back for Friday’s game at Andover.

Big point getters in the game for Cushing were Duff (3a), Frey (1g,2a), and Nisula (2g). For Thayer, it was Malley (2g), Driscoll (2a), and Collins (2a).

Frechette kicked out 37 of 43 for Thayer; Bachman stopped 29 of 32 for Cushing.

Flynn Leads Nobles Past Cushing

Dedham, Mass. – A pair of first period goals by Julie Flynn, who’d add a couple of assists later for a four-point day, propelled host Nobles to a decisive 6-1 win over Cushing Academy here today.

Other big point producers in the win were Pam McDevitt (1g,2a), Leanna Coskren (2a), and Tracey Ferriter (2a).

Nobles got on the board with a power play goal just 1:19 into the game, on a nice passing play, with Coskren and Jenny Cedorchuk moving the puck and then getting it to Flynn, who put Nobles up 1-0.

A couple of minutes later Cedorchuk was injured along the boards, and is day-to-day.

Flynn struck again with 2:25 left in the period when she broke into the zone on a 2-on-1 with 8th grader Denna Laing. Coming down the left wing with speed, Laing made a beautiful pass to Flynn who was waiting at the far post and just banged it home. Molly Kate Devin also picked up an assist, as she had started the play by poking the puck up to Laing.

A little over a minute into the second period, with Nobles on a 5-on-3 power play, Flynn moved it over to Coskren on the right point. Coskren hit freshman Corey Stearns with a diagonal cross-ice pass, and Stearns fired it home for a 3-0 Nobles lead.

Just when it looked like the game would turn into a rout, Cushing LW Allison Szlosek came flying down the left side and fired a short side wrister that snuck between Nobles goaltender Kylie Stephens and the post to make it a 3-1 game at the 3:55 mark.

With 4:33 remaining and the teams skating 4-on-4, Nobles came right back, as Ferriter won a faceoff and got it to McDevitt in front. McDevitt knocked it past Cushing goaltender Lauren Arsenault -- a bang-bang play – to make it 4-1.

With 2:40 left in the period, Julianne Bishop set up at the back door, and took a nice pass from McDevitt to make it 5-1. Ferriter also picked up an assist on the play.
.
Nobles started the third period on the power play, but couldn’t do anything.

Cushing star center Meghan Duggan cross-checked Ferriter about four minutes in. Ferriter went down on the play and after several minutes had to be helped off the ice by her teammates. She’s day-to-day, too.

Nobles finished off the scoring on a pretty passing play as Flynn got it to McDevitt who passed it left to right across the goal mouth to Laura Nelson who snapped it past Arsenault for the final 6-1 margin of victory.

Afterward, Nobles head coach Tom Resor said, “I thought we played very well. We moved the puck well, and I thought some of our goals were the prettiest of the year. We got some nice looks and found the open player.”

Cushing head coach Paul Kennedy said, “Nobles outplayed us. They wanted to win more than we did. They were a much better team than we were today. We’re a young team and youth has it’s upside and its downside. Today was the downside. So it’s back to the drawing board for us.”

Prep Boys to Face U.S. Women's Olympic Team

The U.S. Women's Olympic Team will face the Salisbury, Westminster, and Choate boys' teams in a series of games/scrimmages set to begin this Wednesday night, January 25, at 7:00 pm at Salisbury.

On Friday night, Jan. 27, the U.S. women will be at Westminster at 7:00 pm. Next Monday, Jan. 30 they will be at Choate for a 7:00 pm tilt. Three members of this year's Olympic team played their prep hockey at Choate: defenseman Angela Ruggiero '98; and forwards Kim Insalaco '99, and Julie Chu '01.

U.S. Women's Olympic Team head coach Ben Smith is low-keying this series, and has asked the schools not to publicize it. With his squad's first game at Turin, Italy two weeks from this Saturday, he may have some specific things he wants to work on, so these might be controlled scrimmages of some sort. Then again, they may not be. The Olympic team, which is in training at the Champions Skating Center in Cromwell, Conn., is supplying the refs, though, and the games will be no checking.

Anyone hoping to attend the games might be wise to check with the schools before driving there. There's a chance that the games may not be open to the general public. Choate is reportedly planning on allowing no more than 400 into their rink, and will likely print up tickets in order to hold it to that number.

The rinks at Salisbury and Westminster are also small.

We're also told that Smith wants to avoid any Bobby Riggs-Billie Jean King type of distraction with the Olympics so close at hand.

Wednesday's game will not be the first meeting between the 2006 women's Olympians and a boys team.

On Jan. 4, a few days after beating Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Women's Olympic Team made the short ride south to Warroad, Minnesota, and played the Warroad High School boy's team before approximately 2,000 fans in the 1,700-seat Gardens, which is about the town's population.

The Warroad boys won, 2-1, employing a strategy of driving the puck into the corners as often as they could, and relying on their strength to neutralize their opponent's skill.

Smith's scheduling of that game was a nod to Warroad's role in U.S. hockey history. The town, which sits on the shore of the Lake of the Woods, provided numerous Olympians, like the three Christian Brothers, plus Billy Christian's son, Dave, and Henry Boucha. As recently as the '80s, the Men's Olympic team would always include Warroad on it's pre-Olympic tour, playing the Warroad Lakers, the town's senior team.

The Women Olympians, while based in Lake Placid, played five games against the Northwood School B Team.

Also in Lake Placid, in late October, the squad played a pair of games against an Atlantic District select team of '88s and '89s, losing one and tying the other.

Cottrell, Muse Lead Lawrence Past Berkshire

Groton, Mass. – Sophomore Ashley Cottrell had a goal and three assists and junior goaltender Lizzie Muse came up with numerous key saves to lead host Lawrence Academy to a decisive 5-1 win over Berkshire today.

Other offensive contributors for Lawrence were senior Annie Hogan (1g,2a), freshman Kelly Horan (2g), junior Brittany Murphy (2a), and senior Amy Hollstein (1g).

Numbers don’t tell the whole story, though. This was a solid team win as Lawrence did an excellent job dictating the play, forechecking hard, and playing great team defense. Lawrence forced numerous turnovers, blocked shots, closed off the passing lanes, and generally made things extremely difficult for Berkshire and their big guns like Steph Holmes, Liza Ryabkina, and Ali Edell.

At the game’s start, Berkshire took control. Lawrence took an early penalty, which they killed successfully. Right after, though, Berkshire was awarded a penalty shot after a Lawrence player got called for covering up a puck in the crease.

Holmes took the shot for Berkshire, faking right and going left, tucking the puck along the ice behind Muse.

It would turn out to be the only Berkshire goal of the game.

At the buzzer ending the first period, Berkshire was called for roughing, and Lawrence started the second on the power play.

They didn’t waste any time, either, as Hogan scored from a scrum 14 seconds in to tie the game at 1-1.

LA went up 2-1 when Horan got the puck in the slot and snapped a wrister into the top right corner at the 6:38 mark.

Right after Lawrence got that one-goal lead, Berkshire went on the power play, showing some great puck movement, at least until Lawrence’s Hollstein put a stop to it, making a great block at the point, than taking off on a shorthanded breakaway. Hollstein was denied by Berkshire goalie Tessie Kostlner but it seemed to further galvanize Lawrence.

A number of great opportunities for both teams followed during a lengthy stretch of good exciting hockey.

With 1:29 left in the period, Berkshire defenseman Sarah Appleton was called for a body check. Lawrence got the puck into the Berkshire end, where junior Lauren Brozowski did some great work getting the puck out of the corner, and over to Cottrell who moved it nicely to Hollstein. After a couple more passes, it came back to Hollstein who snapped it home for the power play goal. It was the second period in a row where a penalty late in the period would come back to haunt Berkshire.

In the third period, both goalies made some nice saves early. About six minutes into the period, Berkshire, still trailing 3-1, went on the power play. The opportunity was there for the Bears to make their move to get back in the game. But the power play was effectively shut down by Lawrence, and capped off when Prough, after forcing a turnover, almost converted a short-handed attempt. After killing the penalty, LA kept the pressure on Berkshire, and the Bears began to have trouble just getting the puck out of their end.

With 3:51 left, Lawrence, off solid forechecking on the power play, struck again to make it 4-1 as Hogan, from behind the goal line, spotted Cottrell in front, and hit her with a perfect pass.

With 32 seconds left, LA made it 5-1 when Horan scored from a scrum.

“It was a hard-fought game by both teams,” Lawrence head coach Laurie Mutch said afterward. “Credit Lizzie Muse. She made some great saves. But everybody came out – it was a team effort.”

Mutch said her squad had worked on defensive zone coverage in practice the whole week. “If we can do that well, the other stuff takes care of itself.”

Lawrence Wins a Big One

Pomfret, Conn. – In a battle of two prep powers, Lawrence Academy scored all the goals they needed in the first period and held on for a hard-fought 3-1 win over Pomfret at fog enshrouded Jahn Rink here tonight.

Lawrence came out hard, forechecked hard, and got on the board before the game was four minutes old when freshman forward Kelly Horan converted on a give-and-go out of the corner at the 3:50 mark. Assists went to Ashley Cottrell and Annie Hogan.

A little under four minutes after that, nearly midway through the period, Lawrence made it 2-0 as a shot from the point by senior defenseman Jacqui Villani trickled through. Assists went to Geena Prough and Nicole Bartlett.

With just 1:47 left in the period, Prough beat Pomfret goalie Jennie Bellonio to make it 3-0. Villani picked up an assist on the play.

In the second period, Pomfret came out with a purpose and put on some early pressure, but Lawrence junior goalie Lizzie Muse was up to it, making a nice stop on a Micaela Long shot early.

Meanwhile, at the other end, Pomfret’s Bellonio made a nice stop on an Annie Hogan wraparound attempt to keep the game within reach.

Bellonio’s teammates finally scored 5:20 into the period as senior defenseman Caroline Murphy took a shot from the left point that snuck past Muse and cut LA’s lead to 3-1.

The goal energized Pomfret, as they immediately turned it up another notch. Long, who would be totally kept off the board tonight, was stopped on another excellent chance but, with Pomfret pressing, Lawrence was still getting some nice odd-man rushes. However, Bellonio was back on her game, at one point robbing Lawrence’s Nicole Bartlett with a nice glove save.

Pomfret failed to get more than the one goal, and the period, which Pomfret had the edge in, ended with Lawrence holding onto a 3-1 lead.

Pomfret came out hard again in the third and Long and Andrea Hunter had several sparkling opportunities, but were stopped by Muse, who was sharp tonight.

With 6:17 remaining a Lawrence player was called for a hook, presenting Pomfret with a good opportunity to cut the lead to one. Lawrence, however, not only killed the penalty but did a good job afterward keeping the puck in the Pomfret end, limiting their hosts’ chance of a late comeback as the seconds ticked down.

For the game, Pomfret outshot Lawrence, 30-27, but Lawrence won it on the scoreboard, and, in the process, avenged a 4-2 loss to Pomfret in the Harrington Tournament. Pomfret, of course, beat Nobles to take the tournament title.

Lawrence Academy coach Laurie Baker-Mutch was asked if this was an upset. “I don’t think so,” she said. “Anytime we play them it can go either way.”

Baker-Mutch said the key to winning was simply doing what she had stressed to her charges from the first day of the season. “Just coming out hard,” she said, “and playing three hard periods. Forechecking. Forcing all over the rink. Playing good D zone. If you do all those things, you win games. Today, we did all those things.”

The Weekend Schedule

We have a goal this season of getting the rosters/schedules/game results for every prep school on the U.S. Hockey Report Girls Prep Page. Right now, though, we’re behind where we want to be.

Ideally, the coaches – or their proxies -- post their school’s information. That’s how it works on the boys’ prep page, anyway.

But we’re not going to be that fussy. There’s just too much work to be done, and not that much time to do it in. We’re still looking for coaches, sure, but we’re also looking for responsible students to apply as interns. We’re looking for parents with average computer skills. We’re looking for faculty members. We’re looking for fans. If we get enough people from enough schools, we can complete the task. Actually, we will complete the task.

On top of all that, we have an opportunity here for someone looking to get into the sportswriting racket, as there are numerous reporting opportunities we can offer. Former USHR reporters are now working on newspapers, as well as in college sports information offices. We just need someone with ambition and a knowledge of the girls game.

With a little help, then, we can create a totally accurate record of the 2005-06 season. If you have the time and want to help, it’s highly likely we’ll have something for you to do. Please write Chris Warner at the U.S. Hockey Report. The email address is:   cwarner (at) ushr.com.  and the phone number is (617) 497-1659.

Thank you -- and here's this weekend's schedule.

Choate Too Much for Andover

Andover, Mass. -- After a slow start, Choate got it going, scoring three times in the third period en route to a 4-2 win over host Andover this afternoon.

The first period was a lackluster affair, but things began to pick up in the second. Even with that, the game's first goal didn't come until over halfway through the period, as Choate star junior forward Hilary Knight powered down the left side and put a low shot on net which linemate Ashley Bairos was able to convert at the 8:22 mark.

Choate had other opportunities, but Andover senior goalie Ansley LaHue kept it a 1-0 game.

In the third period, Choate cranked it up another notch. Just 1:18 into the start of the period, a puck popped out of a scrum in front of LaHue and Wild Boars sophomore forward Emily Vitale was there to wrist it over the crowd for a 2-0 Choate lead.

Roughly four minutes later, at 5:28, Choate scored a power play goal when freshman Josephine Pucci shot it from the right point and Knight backhanded it into the net to put the Wild Boars up 3-0.

After that, things got interesting as Andover scored twice to make it a one-goal game leading into the final minute of regulation.

At the 6:53 mark, Andover senior Lindsay Moramarco came down the left side and shot it toward the net. But before it reached Choate freshman goalie Jocelyn Yokow, a Choate defender was able to block it with her stick. The puck though deflected away, where Andover senior Julie Wadland jumped on it, snapping it home to give Andover its first goal of the game and cutting the Choate lead to 3-1.

After that goal, the pace of the game picked up significantly as, with time getting precious, Andover ratcheted up their attack. However, within a minute, Andover got an ill-timed penalty, and then, with that about to expire, picked up a second, severly reducing any hopes Andover had of mounting a comeback.

Nonetheless, Andover did score the next goal, which came as a result of heavy pressure in the Choate end. Wadland took it behind the net and got a pass to Moramarco, her linemate. Moramarco buried it to reduce Choate's lead to 3-2 with 55 seconds on the clock.

Andover poured it on some more and had a couple of good opportunities to tie the game up, but couldn't quite convert. However, Andover had to get their goalie out. They did, but it backfired, as Choate was able to add an empty-netter in the final seconds for the final 4-2 margin of victory.

Afterward, Choate head coach Courtney Riepenhoff said that her team did come out flat. "However," she said, "we were able to put that behind us. The difference in energy level between the first and second periods was like night and day. We looked like a different team. We concentrated on getting shots because we just didn't test their goalie in the first period, when we had just five shots. Raising the energy level was the key thing."

Andover head coach Martha Fenton said she was disappointed in the outcome "but really pleased with their effort in coming back from being down 3-0 and making it a 3-2 game, especially against a team as good as Choate. However, we didn't generate offense the way we typically do. We were slow getting to the net. And that -- going hard to the net -- is our forte. We sat back a little. We might have been too respecful of them."
