Rivers Tops USHR D-II Girls Prep Poll
The holiday tournaments gave USHR an opportunity to see many of the D-II teams. And while there was some movement in the polls, the top two, Rivers and Canterbury, remain undefeated and retain their top two status. The Phillips Exeter Academy Showcase (Jan. 2-3) involving three currently ranked teams -- Rivers, Brooks and Proctor along with Stanstead -- will provide upcoming opportunities for movement. Governor’s (6-1-0) is close to cracking the poll, but overall strength of schedule holds them back at this point. Our next poll will be the week of January 10th.  Records against D-II opponents are in parenthesis.

1. Rivers (4-0-1) – After going 2-0-1 in the Southfield Tourney and remaining undefeated, Rivers maintains the top spot in our poll.  They will be tested in the Phillips Exeter Academy Showcase.  Previous: #1

2. Canterbury (4-0-1) – Saints continue their strong start with a 2-2 tie versus Tilton the sole blemish so far. Upcoming D-I games on January 1 vs. Cushing and January 2 vs. Northfield-Mount Hermon will be good litmus tests.  Previous #2

3. Thayer (6-1-1) – In a division in which goals are hard to come by Thayer has scored 28 in its last five games as part of a six-game winning streak, including going 3-0 at the Southfield Tournament. A January 6th date at Tabor looms large on their schedule.  Previous #6

4. Worcester Academy (3-2) – Three shutout wins over D-I foes at the Cushing Tournament while outscoring opponents 14-0 demonstrates that the Hilltoppers, now 6-2 overall, have appeared to right the ship.  The have an extended break before returning to action to face D-I St. Mark’s on January 6th.  Previous #8

5. Kimball Union (5-1-0) – KUA continues to show the depth that will keep them in games. Seven of their first eight have been one-goal games so they are finding ways to win, but will need to increase their goal scoring if they want to maintain their winning ways. A January 7th showdown with Canterbury should be interesting. Previous #4

6. Brooks (2-0) – The Bishops only blemish so far is its 0-2-1 record vs. D-I teams. That includes a 3-2 loss to Phillips Exeter. Look for them to make some noise at the Exeter Showcase. Previous #5

7. Gunnery (3-2) – Gunnery took 1 of 3 at the Deerfield Showcase, falling to Stanstead and Rothesay-Netherwood to drop to 3-4 overall.  Previous #3

8. Proctor (3-1-2) – Proctor’s only game was a 7-0 win vs. North Yarmouth.  Philips Exeter Academy Showcase games against Brooks, Rivers and Stanstead will provide opportunities for the Hornets to stake their claim to a higher poll position. Previous #9

9. Southfield (3-2-2) – Went 1-1-1 at their tournament, battling to a scoreless tie vs #1 Rivers and falling 2-1 to #4 KUA. Strong goaltending is leading the way so far.  Post-New Year’s games versus D-I foes St. Mark’s and Milton Academy start 2017 off with a bang. Previous NR.

10. Groton (4-2-1) – Zebras hang in the poll after going 1-1-1 in the Southfield Tourney.  Will be hard pressed to maintain their standing with a daunting ISL schedule on tap. Previous #7.

Others in the Mix:
Governor’s (6-1-0), Holderness (4-2-0), and Tilton (3-3-2).

Kent Tops D-I Girls USHR Prep Poll

The sample size grew exponentially over the past weekend, so some clarity is evident. However, there is still a long way to go.

1. Kent (7-0-1) The only undefeated team left in D-I – and they are loaded. Last week: #2

2. New Hampton (4-1-0) A bit of a shocker losing to Berkshire, but New Hampton didn’t have superstar Cayla Barnes in the lineup. Last week: #1

3. Noble & Greenough (7-2-0) Big Blue is tough when it really counts. Not ready to give up the title yet. Last week: #6

4. Loomis (6-1-1) Loomis is stacked. They can beat anyone. Just ask Kent. Last week: #8

5. Andover (5-1-0) Beat up Tabor 3-0 in a bit of a shocker. Coach Martha Fenton has done an incredible job at PA. Last week: #5

6. St. Paul’s (4-2-1) Yes, we know they lost at Rivers earlier but SPS looks like a force to be reckoned with. Last week: Unranked

7. Berkshire (4-1-0) In just her second season, Coach Zavisza has already put the Bears back on the map. Last week: #10

8. Williston (5-1-1) Looked very good at the Harrington. We feel this team will continue to improve and will be a factor at the end. Last week: #3

9. Tabor (4-3-0) The Seawolves need to prove that they are ready to win a big game when it counts. There is way too much talent on this team to miss the tourney again. Last week: #9

10. Lawrence (3-3-1) LA didn’t win a game all weekend at the Harrington, but that’s what happens when you have 4 games in 3 days with 11 skaters. Last week: #4

Nobles Reigns Over 2016 Harrington

USHR saw some super-competitive girls hockey over the weekend at the Harrington Tournament, reinforcing this typist’s feeling that the playing field in girls hockey has never been more level than it is today. The problem, of course, is getting to the top. That means in order to win the championship you’re going to have to prove you can beat Nobles in a big game – not an easy thing to pull off. Nobles was tested in pretty much every game it played this past weekend, but in the end hung on in a thrilling championship game, defeating St. Paul’s 3-2.

1. Nobles -- Is not as deep as in years past but still very impressive. They rely a lot on a talented first line of Harvard commit Becca Gilmore, Wisconsin commit Casey O’Brien, a 9th grader, and Harvard commit Katie Tresca. Their back end is also very solid, with 8th grader Jenna MacDonald looking like a real prospect. The winning goal vs. SPS was scored late on a great individual effort from freshman Maeve Connolly. Fellow freshman Cassidy Piersiak also impressed.

2. St. Paul’s --  SPS has a lot of D-I talent and gave Nobles all they could handle in the championship game.  The Frechette sisters, as well as freshman Natalie Tulchinsky and Tiffany Hill, were standouts up front. Senior defenseman Madison Mahre continues to impress. Senior goaltender Peri Donaldson has been very good as well.

3. Williston -- Despite losing a lot of talent to graduation, Williston impressed here. They lost a close game to Nobles on Saturday and then lost a 15-player shootout in the third-place game to Milton on Sunday. Williston is led by some dynamic forwards including Marielle McHale and Gaby Jones, who seemed to have the puck on their sticks a lot. Sophomores Kate Holmes and Maura Holden and freshman Bryn Saarela were also very impressive. The defense is not as strong as in years past but junior Julia Maclean looked very smooth. Goaltender Dani Marquez is going to be very good.

4. Milton -- Coach Ryan Stone has done a great job getting Milton girls hockey back on the map. The Mustangs play a very solid team defense and are hard to score against. Offensively, they are opportunistic. Defensemen Clare Dudley and Mary Thompson played very well, and young goaltender Maggie Emerson was tremendous all weekend.

5. BB&N -- Played everyone tough but lacked depth. Senior forwards Shannon Griffin and Kate Piacenza, and freshman Molly Griffin, were standouts. The Knights utilized several different goalies over the weekend so that position seems to be up in the air.

6. St. Mark’s – The Lions lost a tough one in the tournament’s opening game Friday morning, bowing 3-2 to Milton in a shootout. They never seemed to recover after that. St. Mark’s does have some impressive forwards in Caroline Peterson, Lindsay Dumond and Julianna Gong.

7. Lawrence Academy -- Lawrence’s difficulties here stemmed directly from a lack of depth. The Spartans have a very talented first line they rely on a lot, but they seemed to run out of gas as the tournament went on.

8. Westminster -- Had a big shootout win in their tournament-opening game over eventual finalist St. Paul’s, but Westminster struggled offensively most of the weekend. Forwards Lilly Holmes and Meg Rittenhouse were very impressive. Both goalies, Leah Klassen and Hannah Stone, were solid.

Thayer & Rivers Impress at Southfield

In a tournament in which goals were hard to come by, Thayer and Rivers proved that they are right up at the top of Div. II. Unfortunately, the Southfield Tournament does not have a playoff round so Thayer and Rivers did not face each other head to head. Their regular season ISL matchup January 25th should be a good one, and loaded with playoff implications.

1. Thayer (3-0-0) won its three games here by a combined score of 15–1.  The Tigers displayed a deep offense led by Brown commit Darby Melia and backed that up with strong goaltending from junior Emily Smith.  Sophomore Amy Le also impressed.

2. Rivers (2-0-1) was led by Hamilton-bound senior forward Missy Segall who scored 5 of Rivers’ 7 goals on the weekend.  Sophomore forwards Camille Phelan and Kate Shaughnessy provided strong contributions up front, and junior goaltender Meghan Gazard continued her impressive start to the season.  While Rivers did impress, it seems that they too can struggle to score at times, only scoring 1 goal in two games on Saturday.

3. Kimball Union (2-1-0) demonstrated that the start to their season is no fluke.  New head coach Mark Hudak has rebuilt on the fly and the Wildcats’ increased depth overall will pay dividends down the road. Senior defenseman Lexi Nottke led a defense that only yielded 2 goals on the weekend.

4. Southfield (1-1-1) proved that junior goaltender Kelly Lavelle will keep them in almost any game.  Scoring must increase if they want to break through to the upper echelon of the D-II ranks.

5. Groton (1-1-1) also needs to figure out how to finish on the offensive end. Junior forward Angelina Joyce showed a high motor, constantly pressing opposing defensemen and creating offensive opportunities.  Sophomore forward Lily Delaney looks like a player with good offensive upside. Sophomore defenseman Bridget Cornell was a steady, solid, physical presence on the back end.

6. Millbrook (1-2-0) battled hard. Unfortunately, like most teams here, they are looking for a little more pop up front. Goaltending and defense kept them in two of their games. Sophomore forward Emma Gotthelf looks like a player to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

7. Vermont Academy (0-2-1) goaltenders Annais Aurard and Sarah Jaccobelli both put forth 30+ save efforts on Saturday. Sophomore forward Lilianna Ricker had some jump in her step.

8. Middlesex (0-3-0) junior goaltender Caroline Silk has the ability to keep her team in every game, but inability to generate consistent offense will hurt Middlesex in the long run.

Day 1 Recap Patsy K. Odden Invitational
Watertown, Conn.
-- USHR was on the road early this morning for a full day of hockey at the Patsy K. Odden Invitational, hosted by the Taft School. It was a productive day, too, with eight very good games. From what we saw, Kent and Loomis were the standout teams and look to be on a collision course to meet in the championship game tomorrow afternoon (1:30 pm). Tabor, Choate, and Andover had some pretty good stretches of hockey but we’re not sure that they have enough to beat either Kent or Loomis.

1. Kent -- A very impressive showing in the 8:00 a.m. game, beating Tabor rather easily. In the afternoon, though, the Lions would need OT to beat Lawrenceville. Kent is deep with three very strong lines and a strong goalie. Forwards Keely Moy and Tina Paolillo and goaltender Becky Dutton were standouts.

2. Loomis -- The Pelicans beat a scrappy Taft team 3-1 in the a.m. game and followed that up with an impressive 2-1 win over a very good Andover team. Northeastern commit Jess Schryver and Princeton commit Sharon Frankel were standouts.

3. Andover -- Beat Hotchkiss 3-1 and then lost a tough one, 2-1 loss to Loomis. Andover is a very impressive hockey team that is deep and is well coached. Yale commit Charlotte Welch was excellent.

4. Tabor -- This is the second time we have seen Tabor and although they are a good team they have a long way to go before challenging for a championship. BC commit Kelly Brown was very good in both games and Olivia Finocchiaro and Jillian Fey both scored big goals.

5. Choate -- It’s the second time we’ve seen Choate this week. They are not as talented as in years past, but with goalie Cam Leonard in net they will be in every game.

6. Lawrenceville -- Played hard in both games. Were particularly impressive in the afternoon OT thriller, giving Kent all they could handle.

7. Taft -- Former Olympian Gretchen Silverman has done a remarkable job getting Taft girls hockey back on the map. They have some talent but are probably another year away from really contending.

8. Hotchkiss -- The Bearcats work hard but were overmatched in both games despite taking Taft to OT. Harvard commit Lindsay Reed is very impressive in net.

Editors Note:

USHR will be back on the road tomorrow taking in games at both the Harrington and Southfield tourneys.

St. Paul's Blanks Deerfield, 3-0

Under a gorgeous sky USHR made the drive up to Deerfield Academy on Wednesday afternoon to take in what looked on paper to be a great early-season matchup between two very strong teams. Unfortunately, that was not the case as the St Paul’s Pelicans cruised to an easy 3-0 win. The game was relatively close in a scoreless first period as Deerfield Freshman Olivia Mikesell was solid in the net, kicking out perhaps 15 shots. The Deerfield power play had a bunch of opportunities but couldn’t convert.

In the second period, St. Paul's scored all three of their goals and took over the game. The two Frechette sisters, junior Gillis and senior Finley, were very impressive as they seemed to generate most of the SPS offense. The St. Paul’s defense, led by senior Madison Mahre, were also very good, allowing the Deerfield offense little in the way of scoring opportunities.

SPS senior goaltender Peri Donaldson picked up the shutout, though she was not seriously tested. By our estimate, she saw fewer than ten shots, perhaps no more than seven.

After two tough losses in a row it's safe to say that St. Paul's made a statement tonight and is very much a factor for a playoff berth. As for the Big Green of Deerfield it's time to regroup and get ready for some very tough Canadian competition at their annual Christmas Tournament, which starts Friday morning. Deerfield has dug themselves a hole to start the season and will need to get off to a good start after the Christmas break if they are serious about making a playoff run.

Editor's Note:

USHR is planning to be at all of the Girls' Christmas tourneys over the next few days so make sure to look for a tournament recap next week. In addition, we have set up a new Girls Twitter account at @USHRGirls. Please give us a follow! Thanks!

Rivers Tops Girls Div. II Prep Poll
While it is very early in the season, some traditional powers have started off strong. Defending champions St. George’s is looking to find its way and some newcomers are pushing for a seat at the table of eight in March.  This weekend’s holiday tournaments should help separate some of the pretenders from the contenders.

1. Rivers (3-0 overall, 2-0 D-II) – Two solid D-II wins coupled with a big 3-1 over D-I power St. Paul’s garners the Red Wings the top spot in our initial poll.

2. Canterbury (5-0 overall, 2-0 D-II) – Saints starting the season strong, yielding only one goal so far. It remains to be seen if strong defense and goaltending continue as the schedule ramps up.

3. Gunnery (2-2 overall, 2-0 D-II) – Two season-opening divisional wins and a pair of 3-2 losses to D-I powers Kent and Westminster demonstrate that Gunnery will be a team in the hunt.

4. Kimball Union (3-1 overall, 3-0 D-II) – A new coaching staff has KUA moving in the right direction with only a 1-0 OT loss to Northfield-Mount Hermon as their only blemish thus far.

5. Brooks (1-1-1 overall, 1-0 D-II) – While the Bishops lost some firepower up front, they still return a solid core that will keep them in contention.

6. Thayer (3-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 D-II) –A strong start to the season for the Tigers, including an impressive win over Worcester Academy. They should be interesting to watch when the ISL gets into full swing.

7. Groton (3-2 overall, 3-1 D-II) – After an up-and-down start, the Zebras have rebounded with two solid wins including a come-from-behind win over Worcester Academy.

8. Worcester Academy (3-2 overall, 3-2 D-II) – A recent two-game dip is not indicative of the strength of the Hilltoppers. Despite graduating 53 goals off last year’s roster, they return enough up front to be in the mix.

9. Proctor Academy (2-2-2 overall, 2-1-2 D-II) – Solid defense and goaltending will be the key for Proctor. If the Hornets can get some production up front they should be a team to be reckoned with.

10. Holderness (3-1-1 overall, 3-1 D-II) – After a season-opening loss to Proctor, the Blue Bulls have been on a roll.

Others in the mix – Southfield (2-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 D-II); Vermont Academy (2-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 D-II)

Groton Comes Back, Edges Worcester, 4-3

Groton, Mass. -- On Monday, USHR traveled to Groton to watch the visiting Worcester Academy Hilltoppers take on the host Groton Zebras in a Div. II matchup. Groton came out on top as a goal from sophomore Lilly Delaney -- her second goal of the game -- broke a 3-3 tie in the third period and lifted the Zebras to a come-from-behind 4-3 win.

In the first period it was all Worcester as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Northeastern commit, junior Micaela Sindoris (2g, 1a), buried a rebound at the 10:56 mark of the first. The Hilltoppers controlled play in the first with several scoring opportunities, but Groton junior goaltender Min Shin kept the game 1-0 until the 1:25 mark when Sindoris scored her second of the game to stake Worcester to a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

Groton came out with an aggressive forecheck in the second and it paid dividends when junior Angelina Joyce (1g, 2a) found the back of the net through a crowd at the 13:45 mark to cut the Worcester lead to 2-1.  Groton's Delaney evened the game at 2-2 with a power play strike at the 9:46 mark. Groton took a 3-2 lead less then two minutes later when senior Coco Wallace converted a 2-on-1 pass from Joyce at the 7:52 mark.   Worcester evened the game at 3-3 with 3:56 to go on in the second when junior Morgan Mordini jammed one in on a goal mouth scramble.

In the third, Groton took a 4-3 lead with 13:01 left when Delaney scored her second goal of the day -- and what would hold up as the game-winner -- from the high slot on a feed from Joyce.  The Hilltoppers pressed for the majority of the third, but were unable to crack the Zebras team defense and goalie Shin.

Looking at the big picture, Monday's game was a hard-fought battle between two teams that project to be in the hunt for one of the coveted eight playoff spots in March.

New Hampton Tops First USHR Girls Poll of Season

Here’s the first USHR Girls Prep Poll of the season. We haven’t seen every team play yet so please take it with a grain of salt. The Christmas tournaments all start this week and the USHR staff will be watching. We have a feeling next week’s poll, given the larger sample size, will be quite revealing.

Prep Girls Poll: Week of Dec. 12, 2016

1. New Hampton (4-0-0 New Hampton looks to be the team to beat so far. Just loaded with talent. If they get consistent goaltending they will be very tough.

2. Kent (4-0-0)  Another team loaded with Div. I talent. Might be the only team as strong as New Hampton, at least on paper.

3. Williston-Northampton (3-0-0)  Lost a lot to graduation after a great season last year, but they return a lot of firepower up front.

4. Lawrence  Academy (2-0-0)   The surprise team of the early days of the season. Has a dynamic first line that can play with anyone.

5. Phillips Andover (2-0-0)  A big surprise last year, and it could continue: this team returns a bunch of the younger players who gained valuable experience last season.

6. Noble & Greenough (3-2-0)  Although they have looked a little shaky early on, it’s a mistake to underestimate Nobles. They have a ton of D-I talent

7. BB&N (2-0-0A bit of a surprise pick here, but  BB&N has looked strong in the early going.

8. Loomis Chaffee (2-1-0)   Lost 2-0 to Nobles at home but then beat up a pretty good Deerfield team 6-0 on the road. Loomis is always in the hunt

9. Tabor (2-1-0)  Have a lot of talent on paper. Now it’s time for the Seawolves to step it up.

10. Berkshire (3-1-0)  Started the season by losing a tough one in OT to Kent, but the Bears are looking good and off to a great start.

Weekend Highlights

Deerfield at Nobles -- Fri. Dec 9, 2016

In what would turn into a tense thriller, host Nobles defeated Deerfield 4-3 Friday night. Nobles dominated the first period, jumping out to an early 3-0 first period lead. However, the Big Green came storming back with three unanswered goals to tie it 3-3 at the second intermission. The teams battled back and forth in the third period until Harvard-bound Becca Gilmore scored with about four minutes left in the game to seal it for Nobles.

It was fun seeing all the future college talent on the ice at one time. The Nobles first line of Becca Gilmore, Casey O’Brien and Danielle Brown were unstoppable most of the night. O’Brien, a freshman, was flying all over the ice and really created a ton of offense for Nobles. It’s easy to see why Wisconsin recruited her. The Nobles defense was also very strong, being led by Harvard-bound sophomore Lily Farden and junior Stephanie Nomicos, who was a presence at both ends of the ice for most of the night. Junior Nicki Lutschaunig was also very solid.

Deerfield was also very impressive and seems to be at the beginning of a big turnaround with the girls hockey program led by coach Gen Pitt. The Big Green’s top line of Williams-bound Meghan Halloran, Mary Edmonds, and Mae Emerson were good all night and the second line of Aurora Devereaux (Freshman/1G), Christina Halloran (Freshman/1G) and Jenna Greenbaum outplayed the Nobles second line for most of the night. The Deerfield defense is also very strong with some impressive young players led by BC commit sophomore Deirdre Mullowney and sophomore Erin DeMarco. Sophomore goalie Jordan Manning struggled early but stepped it up at crunch time with some big saves.

It looks like it is shaping up to be an exciting girls hockey season, with a wide- open race to win one of the eight coveted spots for the post-season playoffs.  Stayed tuned to the USHR girls section.

Lawrence at Tabor  -- Fri. Dec. 9, 2016

On Friday, USHR traveled down to beautiful Tabor Academy, on the west shore of Sippican Harbor to watch the Tabor Seawolves take on visiting Lawrence Academy in a battle between two teams that each have high hopes of making the Final 8 tournament in March. In a bit of a surprise, it was all Lawrence early as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Lawrence features an excellent first line led by Quinnipiac commit Laura Lundblad, who was a force all night (4 points). Her two linemates, junior Corinne McCool and senior Kelsey Ryan, were also very impressive.

The Seawolves finally woke up in the second period as BC commit Kelly Browne really stepped up and took over the game. Browne set up impressive sophomore Anne Berry for the first goal and then scored the next two goals herself to make it a 3-3 game and force overtime.

In overtime, Lawrence’s Lundblad jumped on a sloppy Tabor turnover and roofed one to win it and keep LA, a force to be reckoned with, undefeated.

Nobles at Choate -- Sat. Dec. 10, 2016

USHR traveled down to Wallingford, Conn. on Saturday afternoon to watch Nobles take on perennial girls powerhouse Choate. In a bit of a surprise it was Choate pulling off the upset, 2-1.The story of the game was Choate senior goalie Cameron Leonard, who stood on her head all game. Nobles controlled most of the play with Becca Gilmore and freshman sensation Casey O’Brien generating most of the Nobles offense. In the third period Nobles completely took over the game but Leonard came up big time after time. She must have had close to 20 saves in the third period alone.

The weekend was clearly big wakeup call for Nobles, which almost lost at home to a scrappy Deerfield team on Friday night. Choate, on the other hand, might have turned around their season and now looks to be a strong candidate for a post-season berth. So stay tuned!

St. Paul’s at Rivers – Sat. Dec. 10, 2016

USHR was in Weston, Mass. Saturday afternoon to watch St. Paul’s take on Div. II powerhouse Rivers, with the latter hanging on for a 3-1 victory. Although St. Paul’s was clearly the better team, Rivers was very impressive in its own zone with junior goalie Meghan Gazzard making most of her saves look relatively easy. Rivers sophomore forward Camille Phelan looked very strong with an early goal and an assist to give her team the upper hand.

Although this was a big setback for St. Paul’s, we look for them to rebound on Wednesday at Deerfield. SPS is loaded with talent and has a lot of experience, hence we would be surprised if they aren’t fighting for a playoff spot at the end of the season.
